信仰も、それと同様に、行いを伴わなければ、それだけでは死んだものである。しかし、「ある人には信仰があり、また他の人には行いがある」 と言う者があろう。それなら、行いのないあなたの信仰を見せてほしい。そうしたら、わたしの行いによって信仰を見せてあげよう。ヤコブ２:１７−１８
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show you my faith by my works. James 2:17-18
This well-known scripture explains clearly what happens when we have true faith.
このよく知られた聖句は私たちが真の信仰を持つときに何が起こるのか明確に説明しています。
James teaches us that “faith without works is dead”.
ヤコブは「行いの無い信仰は死んだものである」と私たちに教えています。
What does that mean?
それはどういう意味でしょう？
The Prophet Joseph Smith said that “faith is a motivating factor”. In other words, if we have faith, we must take action of some kind.
預言者ジョセフ・スミスは「信仰は動機付けの要因である」と述べています。言い換えば、信仰があれば私たちは何らかの行動をとらねばなりません。
Let’s say you want to be good at soccer. How do you accomplish that? There are many books about how to play soccer. There are many training videos about soccer. There are many soccer games. You can read all the books, watch all the videos, and attend all the games. But will that make you a great soccer player?
たとえばあなたがサッカーが上手くなりたいとします。どのようにそれを達成しますか？サッカーについて沢山の本が出版されています。沢山のトレーニングビデオがあります。サッカーの試合も沢山あります。それらのすべての本を読み、すべてのビデオを見、すべてのゲームを観に行くことはできます。しかしそれで一流のサッカー選手になれますか？
Probably not.
おそらく違うでしょう。
If you do not take action, if you do not practice, if you do not actually play soccer, it is doubtful that you will ever become better at soccer.
もし行動を起こさなかったり、練習をせず、実際にサッカーをしなければサッカーがうまくなれるか疑わしいでしょう。
In the gospel of Jesus Christ, faith is the most basic principle. When people first learn about the Church, one of the first things they are taught by the missionaries is faith in God. They are challenged to take action, to read, to pray, and to find out if the “seed” of faith is true.
イエス・キリストの福音において信仰は最も基本的な原則です。人々が最初に教会について学ぶとき、宣教師から最初に教えられることは神への信仰です。彼らは信仰の「種」が真実かわかるよう読み、祈り、行動を起こすようチャレンジを受けます。
As Alma teaches us, once we learn that the “seed” of faith is true, we cannot stop. If we do not nourish the seed, if we do not water the seed, if we do not take good care of the seed as it grows, it will not become stronger.
アルマが教えるように、私たちは一度信仰の「種」が真実だと知ると、止めることは出来ません。私たちがその種を養わなければ、種に水を与えず、種が成長するように世話をしなければ、それは強く育ちません。
In our own lives, we show our faith in the Lord by taking actions. We show our faith by praying each day. We show our faith by reading the scriptures each day. We show our faith by serving others each day.
私たちも自身の生活の中で行動を起こすことで主への信仰を示します。毎日祈ることによって信仰を示します。毎日聖典を読むことによって信仰を示します。私たちは毎日奉仕をすることによって信仰を示します。
Just like the person who wants to become a great soccer player but who only watches does not improve, we will not gain greater faith unless we work at it.
一流のサッカー選手になりたいのに、ただ見ているだけでは上達しないように、私たちもそのために必要な行動をとらねければ強い信仰は身につきません。
Good works are a natural result of faith. As we grow in faith, we will want to be better at keeping the commandments. As we grow in faith, we will want to be better at fulfilling our callings. As we grow in faith, we will want to be better at serving others.
善い行いは信仰から来る当然の結果です。信仰が成長すると私たちは戒めをもっと良く守りたいと思うでしょう。信仰が成長すると、私たちは召しをもっと良く果たしたいと思うでしょう。信仰が成長すると、私たちは誰かにもっと仕えたいと思うでしょう。
As we do these things, our faith and our works both grow. It is not a question of which one is more important. They are both equally important. There cannot be true faith without good works and there cannot be good works without faith.
これらのことを行うと私たちの信仰と行いは成長します。どちらがより重要なのかは問題ではありません。それらのどちらも同じように重要です。善い行い無くして真の信仰などあり得ませんし、信仰なしに善い行いもあり得ません。
As we come to the end of another year, let’s take time to evaluate our faith and our works. If there are areas where we need improvement, this is a great time to start. Let’s resolve to go forward into the new year showing our faith by our good works.
今年も終わろうとしていますが、時間を取って私たちの信仰と行いを評価してみましょう。もし改善の必要な所があれば、今が始める良い時です。新年に向けて善い行いを持って信仰を示し前進する決意をしましょう。
