イエスがヘロデ王の代に、ユダヤのベツレヘムでお生れになったとき、見よ、東からきた博士たちがエルサレムに着いて行った、「ユダヤ人の王としてお生れになったかたは、どこにおられますか。わたしたちは東の方でその星を見たので、そのかたを拝みにきました」。マタイ２:１−２
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him”. Matthew 2:1-2
This is a very interesting scripture about the birth of our Savior.
これは私たちの救い主の誕生について非常に興味深い聖句です。
We do not know anything about the “wise men” who came from the east. We don’t know how many there were, or where they came from, or even when they came.
私たちは東方から来たその「博士たち」について何も知りません。何人いたのか、何処から来たのか、またいつ来たのかさえわかりません。
From other scriptures, it may have been a year or more after the birth of the Savior that the wise men arrived.
他の聖句から、博士たちが到着したのは救い主の誕生から一年以上後の事だろうと理解できます。
None of that is really important, though.
しかしそのようなことはあまり重要ではありません。
What is important is this. The wise men, where ever they came from, understood the prophecies of the ancient prophets about the coming of a Messiah. They must have had access to scriptures in their own country that taught them about the promised birth of the Savior.
重要なことはこれです。博士たちが何処から来たとしてもメシヤが来られる事を古代の預言者が預言していたのを理解していました。彼らは、救い主の誕生について教えている聖典が自分の国にあったということです。
They must have understood that there would be a new star. They must have understood what the star meant. They must have understood that it would lead them to Christ.
彼らは新しい星が現れると理解していたに違いありません。その星が意味することを理解していたことやそれがキリストへ導くことを理解していたに違いありません。
We do not know how far they had to travel to reach Jerusalem. We do not know what hardships or trials they experienced during their journey. We do not know how long they had to follow the star.
エルサレムにたどり着くため彼らがどれ程旅をしなければならなかったかは私たちには分かりません。彼らが旅の途中どのような苦難や試練を経験したのか、またどれ程長い間その星を追わねばならなかったかわかりません。
What we do know is that they had great faith. We know that they kept following the star, knowing that it would lead them to the Christ child. We know that arrived in Jerusalem expecting everyone to already know that Christ had been born.
私たちが知っていることは彼らが大きな信仰を持っていたということです。彼らは幼子キリストに導かれると知っていたのでその星を追い続けたと私たちは理解しています。私たちはエルサレムに着いたときは誰もがキリストがお生まれになったことをすでに知っていることを期待していたと理解しています。
They set a great example for us.
彼らは私たちにとって素晴らしい模範を示しました。
We, too, have been taught about the ancient prophecies of the Savior’s birth. We, too, ask, “where is he that is born King of the Jews”. We, too, seek the Christ child.
私たちも救い主の誕生について古代の預言を教えられてきました。私たちも「ユダヤ人の王としてお生れになったかたは、どこにおられますか」と尋ね、また幼子キリストを探し求めます。
Rather than following the light of a star, we follow the light of the gospel. We take our journey from a far off land in a symbolic way, leaving behind our “natural man” as we follow the covenant path to the Savior. Rather than bring gifts of worldly things, we bring spiritual gifts. We bring the gift of a broken heart and a contrite spirit. We bring the gift of a willingness to keep the commandments. We bring the gift of being true followers of our Savior Jesus Christ.
星の光に従うのではなく私たちは福音の光に従います。私たちは象徴的な意味で、救い主への誓約の道に従うとき「生まれながらの人」を後に残し、遠く離れた土地から旅をします。この世的な贈り物を携えてくるのではなく私たちは霊的な贈り物を携えてきます。私たちは打ち砕かれた心と悔いる霊の贈り物を携えてきます。喜んで戒めを守りたいという贈り物を携えてきます。私たちの救い主イエス・キリストの真の従者となる贈り物を携えてきます。
It is only through the great Atonement of Jesus Christ that we have any hope in this world. All our hopes, all our joys, all our expectations, are possible only because of our Savior.
私たちがこの世で希望を持つことができるのは、イエス・キリストの大いなる贖罪を通してのみです。それはイエス・キリストの大いなる贖罪を通してのみ、この世で希望を持つことが出来ます。私たちのすべての希望、すべての喜び、すべての期待は救い主によってのみ可能となります。
As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, let’s remember the example of the wise men. Let’s follow the star of the gospel. Let’s bring our own gifts to the Savior. Let’s come and worship him.
救い主の誕生を祝う時、博士たちの模範を忘れないようにしましょう。福音の星に従いましょう。救い主に私たち自身の贈り物を携えていきましょう。来て主を礼拝しましょう。
