だから、何事でも人からしてほしいと望むことは、人々にもそのとおりにしなさい。これが律法であり、預言者である。第三ニーファイ１４：１２

Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them, for this is the law and the prophets.  3 Nephi 14:12

This scripture is from the Lord’s teaching to the Nephite people, during his ministry to them after his resurrection.  It is basically the same teachings as are found in Matthew, in the section often referred to as the “Sermon on the Mount”.

この聖句は、主の復活後ニーファイの民の中で教導された時に、主が教えられたものです。それはマタイによる福音書にある「山上の垂訓」として知られるのと同じ教えです。

The Lord teaches the Nephites many important principles about repentance, about not judging others, about doing good things, and about being good examples.  This particular scripture is given as a summary of those teachings. 

主はニーファイ人に悔い改めや他人を裁かないこと、善い行いをすること、良い模範であることについて多くの重要な原則を教えておられます。特にこの聖句は、それらの教えを要約しています。

It neatly summarizes how followers of Jesus Christ should act.  In a few short and simple words, the Lord teaches us a great eternal principle.

それはイエス・キリストの従者がどう行動すべきであるかをきちんと要約されています。短く簡単な言葉で、主は大いなる永遠の原則を私たちに教えておられます。

It is very easy for us to decide how we want other people to treat us.  It does not take years of study, or attending classes, or taking any tests.  We all know how we want other people to treat us.  

他の人に私たちをどのように扱って欲しいか決めるのは非常に簡単です。何年も勉強したり、クラスに参加したり、テストを受けたりする必要はありません。私たちは誰もが他の人にどのように扱って欲しいか分かっています。

Since we all know how we want other people to treat us, it is easy to understand how we should treat other people.  

私たち誰もが、他の人にどう扱って欲しいかを知っているので、私たちが他の人をどう扱うべきかを理解するのは簡単です。

Why is it so easy for us to understand how we want other people to treat us, but so difficult for us to treat other people in the same way?

私たち誰もが、他の人にどう扱って欲しいかを簡単に分かるのに、他の人を同じように扱うのが何故それほど難しいのでしょう？

As in all things, the Savior set the example for us.  He was kind to everyone, even to those people that the society at his time did not like.  He was kind to the Samaritans, people who the Jews hated. He was kind to the lepers, people who were cast out because of their disease.  He was kind to the sinners, who were looked down on by the Jewish leaders.  

すべてのものと同様に、救い主は私たちに模範を示されました。主に好意をもっていなかった当時の人々にさえ親切でした。主はユダヤ人が嫌っていたサマリヤ人にも親切でした。病気のため追い出されていたライ病人（ハンセン病）にも親切でした。ユダヤ人の指導者から見下されていた罪人にも親切でした。

At all times, but especially during the time of the year when we celebrate the birth of our Savior, we should be kind to those around us.  We should be kind to those who are in need. We should be kind to those who are different, alone, left out, lonely. We should be kind to those who are new in our wards.  We should be kind to those who have not yet found the true gospel. We should be kind to those who are not kind to us.

どのような時でも、特に私たちの主の誕生を祝うこの時期に、私たちは周りの人々に親切にするべきです。助けの必要とする人に親切にするべきです。私たちと異なる人や一人ぼっちで孤独な人にも親切にするべきです。私たちのワードで新しい会員にも親切にするべきです。まだ福音を知らない人にも親切にするべきです。そして私たちに親切でない人々に対しても親切で無ければなりません。

What does it mean, “for this is the law and the prophets”?

さて「これが律法であり、預言者である」とはどのような意味でしょう？

All of the prophets, both ancient and modern, have taught us to keep the commandments of the Lord.  The commandments, or the law, teach us to follow our Savior. The Savior taught us to be kind to everyone, to “love thy neighbor as thyself”.

古代と現代のすべての預言者は主の戒めを守ることを教えてきました。戒めまたは律法は救い主に従うことを教えています。救い主は私たちに「自分を愛するようにあなたの隣人を愛せよ」と誰にでも親切であるように教えておられます。

At the end of the famous parable, the Good Samaritan, the Lord instructs us to “go and do likewise”.

有名なたとえ話、良いサマリヤ人の終わりでは主は「行って同じようにしなさい」と教えておられます。

As we go through this next week, let’s do better to be kind to everyone.  Let’s do better to love our neighbors. Let’s do better to follow the example of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Let’s “go and do likewise”.

新しい週が始まります。誰にでももっと親切にしましょう。私たちの隣人をもっと愛しましょう。私たちの救い主イエス・キリストの模範によく従いましょう。「行って同じように」しましょう。
