最後に、兄弟たちよ。すべて真実なこと、すべて尊ぶべきこと、すべて正しいこと、すべて純真なこと、すべて愛すべきこと、すべてほまれあること、また徳と言われるもの、称賛に値するものがあれば、それらのものを心に止めなさい。ピリピ人４：８

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  Philippians 4:8

This well-known scripture is from the letter the Apostle Paul wrote to the early saints living in the city of Philippi in what is now Greece.  Paul lists a number of good things that we, as followers of Jesus Christ, should seek.

このよく知られている聖句は、使徒パウロがピリピの町（現在のギリシャ）に住む初期の聖徒に宛てた手紙からのものです。パウロはイエス・キリストの従者として私たちが探し求めるべき幾つかの良いことを挙げています。

One of the reasons this scripture is so well-known is because the Prophet Joseph Smith referred to it in the 13th Article of Faith.  He called it the “Admonition of Paul”. The 13th Article of Faith lists these same good qualities and encourages us to “seek after these things”.

この聖句が非常によく知られている理由の一つは、預言者ジョセフ・スミスが信仰箇条13条で言及しているからです。彼はそれを「パウロの勧告」と呼んでいます。信仰箇条13条でこれらと同じよい特質をあげて「これらのことを尋ね求める」ように私たちを励ましています。

So what is it that we should seek after?  Paul lists eight different qualities in his letter.

それでは私たちは何を尋ね求めるべきでしょう？パウロは手紙の中に８つの異なる徳を挙げています。

The first quality is things that are true.  This is the basis of all gospel blessings. If we know what is true, we know which path to follow.  This is perhaps the most important quality. As Moroni teaches us, “by the power of the Holy Ghost, you may know the truth of all things”.

最初の徳は真実なことです。これはすべての福音の祝福の基礎です。もし私たちが何が真実かを知っていれば、従うべき道が分かるでしょう。これはおそらく最も重要な徳でしょう。モロナイは「聖霊​の​力​に​よって、あなたがた​は​すべて​の​こと​の​真理​を​知る​で​あろう」と教えています。

The second quality is things that are honest.  As followers of Jesus Christ, we are expected to be honest in all our actions.  To deceive someone, to lie, to trick someone, to be dishonest, these are things that we must avoid completely.  

二番目の徳は正直なことです。イエス・キリストの従者として、私たちはすべての行動に正直であることを期待されています。誰かを欺く、嘘をつく、誰かをだます、不正直であることなどは私たちが完全に避けなければならないことです。

The third quality is things that are just.  “Just” means things that are right. It does not matter what the world may think, there are things that are right and just.  Just things are not always popular, but they are always right.

三番目の徳は正しいことです。世界がどう考えるか関係なく、正しくて公正なものがあります。正しいことは常に世に受け入れられるとは限りませんが、それらは常に正しいのです。

The fourth quality is things that are pure.  To be pure means to be undefiled, to have no imperfections, to be 100%.  We may not be perfect, but we can be pure. We can be pure in our love for the Savior.  We can be pure in our thoughts and actions.  

四番目の徳は純粋なことです。純粋であることは、汚れていないこと、欠陥が無く、100% であることを意味します。私たちは完全ではないかもしれませんが、純粋であることはできます。私たちは救い主への愛を純粋にすることができます。私たちの思いと行いを純粋にすることができます。

The fifth quality is things that are lovely.  There is so much in this world that is evil, sad, worn out, trashy.  It is sometimes difficult to find something that is lovely. Our homes can be lovely, though.  They can be clean, neat, tidy. Our appearance can be lovely. We do not have to have fancy clothes or jewelry or the latest styles.  Our appearance can be lovely if we are neat, simple, and clean. We can appreciate the lovely things in nature, a flower, a sunset, a meadow.

五番目の徳は好ましい​ことです。この世は邪悪や悲しみ、疲れ、悲惨な気持ちに満ちています。好ましいことを見つけるのが難しいこともあります。しかし私たちの家は好ましく、清潔で、きれいに整頓されていれます。私たちの外観も好ましく、最新のスタイルで派手な服や宝石を用意する必要はありません。私たちがきちんとしていて、シンプルで、清潔なら好ましくなれます。自然や、花、夕焼け、牧草地の中でも好ましさを感謝することが出来ます。

The sixth quality is things that are of good report.  The news today is filled with terrible tragedies, wars, violent acts of nature.  It seems that the new programs never talk about the good things that happen in the world.  The Church website, though, is filled with stories about good things, about people who have done things “of good report”.  Most things of good report are those small and simple actions we take in helping others.

六番目の徳は誉のあることです。今日のニュースは悲惨なことや戦争、暴力的な内容で溢れています。世で起きている良い出来事について伝えることなどないように思えます。しかし教会のウェブサイトには、良い出来事や「誉のあること」を行った人々についてニュースが沢山あります。「誉のあること」のもっとも代表的なことは、他人を助けるために私たちがとる小さくて簡単な行いです。

The seventh quality is virtue.  As the Prophet Joseph Smith taught us in the Doctrine and Covenants,  Section 121, verse 45, we should let “virtue garnish our thoughts unceasingly”.

七番目の徳は美徳です。預言者ジョセフ・スミスが教義と聖約 121 章 45 節で教えるように、私たちは「絶えず徳であなたの思いを飾るように」すべきです。

Finally, the eighth quality is praise, or as the 13th Article of Faith says, things that are praiseworthy.  The question here is, what kind of praise? Not praise for our own actions, our own accomplishments, or our own success, but rather praise for the work of the Lord.  We should not seek to be praised of men, but seek to help men praise the Lord.

最後に八番目の徳は賞賛、または信仰箇条13条で述べているように称賛​に​値するものです。ではどのような賞賛ですか？私たち自身の行いや私たち自身の成功を賞賛するのではなく、むしろ主の業を賞賛するのです。私たちは人の誉れではなく、人が主を誉めたたえることを探し求めるべきです。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember what we have been taught by the Apostle Paul, by the Prophet Joseph Smith, and by Moroni.  Let’s remember the high standard that followers of the Lord Jesus Christ should strive to achieve. Let’s look for ways to improve in each of these eight qualities.

使徒パウロや預言者ジョセフ・スミス、モロナイによって教えられたことを覚えて来週を過ごしましょう。主イエス・キリストの従者が達成するために努力すべき高い標準を忘れないようにしましょう。これら８つの徳をそれぞれ磨く方法を探してみましょう。
