しかし、すでに律法を与えられ、まことにわたしと同じように神のすべての戒めを受けていながら、それらに背き、自分の試しの生涯をいたずらに過ごす者は災いである。その者の状態は恐ろしいものである。ニーファイ第二書９：２７
But wo unto him that has the law given, yea, that has all the commandments of God, like unto us, and that transgresseth them, and that wasteth the days of his probation, for awful is his state. 2 Nephi 9:27
In 2 Nephi chapter 9, Jacob teaches the people about the Atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ. In the verses just preceding verse 27, Jacob reminds the people of one of the most important aspects of the Atonement.
第2ニーファイ9章ではヤコブが救い主イエス・キリストの贖いについて民に教えています。27節の直前の節でヤコブは人々に贖いについて最も重要な一面を思い起こさせています。
One of the most important and most merciful parts of the Atonement is that it not only covers the sins of those who repent, but it also covers the sins of those who did not know about the gospel and who sinned in ignorance.
贖いにおいて最も重要で慈悲深い部分のひとつは悔い改める者の罪を肩代わりされるだけでなく、福音を知らない者の罪や知らずに犯した罪をも肩代わりしてくださることです。
Every other Christian church teaches that anyone who was not baptized, even babies, must suffer in hell forever. Jacob teaches us a very different idea. He teaches the people that the great Atonement covers the sins of those “had not the law given unto them”.
他のすべてのキリスト教会ではバプテスマを受けていない人は、たとえ赤ちゃんであっても永遠に地獄で苦しむと教えています。ヤコブは私たちに非常に異なった考えを教えています。彼は人々に、偉大な贖いが「律法を与えられてない」人々の罪をかばうと教えています。
But Jacob also gives a stern warning to those of us that “have the law given unto them”.
しかしヤコブは私たちに「律法を与えられている」という厳しい警告を与えています。
Those of us who have been taught the commandments and the gospel of Jesus Christ are expected to live according to what we have been taught.
イエス・キリストの戒めと福音を教えられている私たちは、教えられたとおりに生きることが期待されています。
Jacob warns us that if we do not obey the commandments, we will waste the days of our probation. If we waste the days of our probation, “awful” will be our state.
ヤコブは戒めに従わなければ自分の試しの生涯をいたずらに過ごす事になると警告しています。もしそのようにいたずらに過ごす者の状態は「恐ろしいもの」になるでしょう。
What does it mean to “waste the days of our probation”?
では「自分の試しの生涯をいたずらに過ごす」とはどういう意味でしょう？
It means we refuse to obey the commandments. It means we refuse to attend all of our Sunday meetings. It means we refuse to follow the counsel of the prophets and apostles.
それは戒めに従うことを拒むことを意味します。それは日曜日のすべての集会に出席することを拒否することです。それは預言者と使徒の勧告に従うことを拒否することです。
As we learn about the gospel, one of the first things we learn is that it is a gospel of action. Becoming a follower of Jesus Christ requires us to make choices. It requires us to take action. It requires us to do good.
福音について学ぶとき、最初に学ぶことのひとつは、行動をともなう福音であるということです。イエス・キリストの従者となることは選択をする必要があります。行動を起こす必要があります。善い行いをする必要があります。
We all have many opportunities to do good. We all have many opportunities to serve others. We all have many opportunities to pray, to read the scriptures, to help those in need.
私たちは皆、善い行いをする多くの機会があります。他の人に仕えたり、祈り、聖典を読み、助けの要る人の力になる多くの機会があります。
It is not always convenient to do good things. It is not always easy to do good things. It is not always easy to take action.
もちろんいつも都合よく良いことが出来るわけではありません。いつも良いことをするのは必ずしも簡単ではありません。常に行動するのが易しいわけではありません。
As disciples of Jesus Christ, we have been taught the law. We have accepted the gospel. We have learned that we must serve others. If we do not do these things, we will be wasting the days of our probation.
イエス・キリストの弟子として、私たちは律法を教わってきました。私たちは福音を受け入れ、他人に仕えなければならないことを学びました。そうした行いがなければ私たちは自分の試しの生涯をいたずらに過ごすことになるのです。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember that our time is short on this earth. Let’s remember the warning of Jacob. Let’s not waste the days of our probation. Let’s be worthy to receive every blessing the Lord has promised to the faithful.
この地上での私たちの時間は短いことを覚えて来週を過ごしましょう。ヤコブの警告を忘れないようにしましょう。自分の試しの生涯をいたずらに過ごさないようにしましょう。主が忠実な者に約束されたすべての祝福を受けるにふさわしくなりましょう。
