見よ、わたしはあなたがたに、これを一つのたとえとして告げた。これはまさにわたしのようである。わたしはあなたがたに言う。一つとなりなさい。もしあなたがたが一つでなければ、あなたがたはわたしのものではない。教義と聖約 ３８：２７

Behold, this I have given unto you this as a parable, and it is even as I am.  I say unto you, be one; and if ye are not one ye are not mine. D&C 38:27

In this revelation given by the Lord to the Prophet Joseph Smith in a conference of the Church held in 1831, the Lord gives a strict commandment.  The Lord commands us to “be one”. He warns us that if we are not one, we are not his.

1831年の教会の大会で預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して与えられたこの啓示で、主は厳格なひとつの戒めを与えられました。主は「一つとなりなさい」と私たちを戒められ、もし一つでなければ私たちは主のものではないと警告されました。

What does this mean?

それはどういうことでしょう？

Every one of us is a son or daughter of Heavenly Father.  We are truly brothers and sisters. But does that mean we are all the same?

私たちは誰でも天父の息子や娘ですし、まことの兄弟姉妹です。しかしそれは誰もが同じということでしょうか？

Think about your own family.  Think about your own brothers and sisters, your parents, your grandparents, your cousins, your aunts and uncles.   Are they all the same? Do they have the same interests, the same talents, the same opinions?

自分の家族を思い浮かべてください。自分の兄弟姉妹や両親、祖父母、いとこ、おじ、おばを思い浮かべてください。それは皆、同じですか？彼らは皆、同じ興味や才能、意見を持っていますか？

Probably not.

おそらく違うでしょうか。

Each person is a totally unique individual.  Someone once pointed out that even when a husband and a wife speak the same language, they don’t really understand the other person’s words completely.

それぞれ人はユニークな存在なのです。かつてある人が、夫と妻が同じ言語を話すときですら彼らはお互いの言葉を完全に理解しあえないことを指摘しています。

Even though they may have both grown up speaking Japanese, or English, or any other language, the meaning they place on even common words may be very different based upon their experiences growing up.  

たとえ両者とも日本語や英語または他の言語を話すように育っていても、共通の言葉でさえ意味は育った経験に基づいて非常に異なる場合があります。

When one person says, “yes, I believe that prayer is important”, they may mean that a short, brief prayer is what is important, while the other person who hears, understands the words, and agrees with the concept, may think that a prayer should be a long conversation detailing all the concerns the heart.  They are both right. They both think they understand what the other person said, but they both have a different idea about what those words mean.

「そうです、祈りは大切です」と言うとき、ある人は短く簡潔な祈りが大切だと考え、また別の人は

祈りは心のすべての思いを事細かく長くお話しするものであると考えます。どちらも間違ってはいません。彼ら両者とも相手の意見を理解しています。しかし互いにそれらの言葉が何を意味するかについて異なる考えを持っています。

If such differences can be seen between a husband and a wife, or between siblings that have grown up together in the same house, how is it possible for us to “be one”, as the Lord commands when we are all very different?

夫と妻の間または同じ家で一緒に成長した兄弟の間でもその様な違いが見られるのに、どうして私たちは主が戒めておられるように「一つ」となることが出来るでしょうか。

The Lord is not asking us to become one in the sense of having the exact same ideas, the same opinions, or the same interests.  All of those different ideas, opinions, and interests are necessary to help build the Kingdom of God.  

主はまったく同じ考えや意見または関心において一つとなるように私たちに望んでおられるわけではありません。それらさまざまな考えや意見、関心はすべて神の王国を築く上で必要なことです。

We are expected to be one in our testimony of Jesus Christ.  We are expected to be one in our love for the Savior. We are expected to be one in our desire to serve in whatever capacity we may be assigned.  

私たちはイエス・キリストの証において一つとなるよう期待されています。救い主への愛において一つとなるよう期待されています。与えられる才能を使って奉仕したいと望むことにおいて一つとなるよう期待されています。

We are expected to be one in regarding everyone as our brother or our sister.  We are expected to feed the Lord’s sheep, where ever they are. We are expected to treat everyone with kindness, love, and compassion.  

私たちはすべての人に兄弟姉妹として一つとなるよう期待されています。私たちはどこにいても主の羊を養うよう期待されています。すべての人を親切と愛、憐れみをもって接するよう期待されています。

As we strive to “be one”, we will become one with the Lord.

私たちが「一つとなるよう」努力するとき、私たちは主と一つとなるのです。

As we go through this next week, let’s do better.  Let’s work hard to “be one” as the Savior has commanded us.  Let’s be worthy of being the Lord’s true disciples.
