Therefore, let you light so shine before this people, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.  3 Nephi 12:16

Although the Nephites had the scriptures on the brass plates, they did not have any of the scriptures that were given after Lehi and his family left Jerusalem.  When the resurrected Lord visited the Nephites, he gave them many important scriptures.  This is one of those very important scriptures.

In this scripture, the Savior teaches us about our duty as followers of Jesus Christ.  It is a very easy scripture to understand.  There is nothing complicated or mysterious about it.  Our duty is very clear.

この聖句では救い主はイエス・キリストに従うものとしての義務を教えられました。それは理解がとても簡単な教えです。複雑で不可解なものではありません。私たちの義務はとてもはっきりしています。

The Savior tells us that we must “let our light so shine”.   What does this mean?

救い主は「私たちの光を輝かす」よう教えられました。それはどのようなことでしょう？

As followers of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we have a duty to keep his commandments.  When we keep the commandments, we gain greater light.  As we gain greater light, we become different than the people in this world who are in darkness.  

救い主、イエス・キリストに従うものとして、私たちは主の戒めを守る義務があります。戒めを守るとき更なる光を受けます。更なる光を受ける時、この世の暗闇にいる人々とは違う者になるのです。

We become an example for those people to follow.  Just like a lighthouse helps guide a ship into the safety of the harbor, our light will help guide others to Jesus Christ.  

私たちは従うものの模範になるのです。丁度、灯台が船を港の安全な場所に導く助けとなるように、私たちの光は他の人々をイエス・キリストに導くのです。

The scripture says “let your light so shine”.  Why is the “so” important?  In English, this places special emphasis on the verb.  It means that we must use great effort to make our light shine.  It means that we cannot be lazy or idle.  It means that we must do our best.

聖句は「あなたがたの光を輝かせる」よう言っていますが、それはなぜ「そんなに」大切なのでしょう？英語では特別な強調を動詞の上に置きます。それは私たちの光を輝かすのにとでも努力をしなければならないと言う意味です。それは私たちは不精や怠惰でいてはいけないという意味です。

How do we “let our light so shine”?

どのようにして「わたしたちの光を輝かせる」のでしょう？

We let our light shine by keeping the commandments.  We let our light shine by serving faithfully in our callings.  We let our light shine by serving others.  

私たちは戒めを守ることでわたしたちの光を輝かせ、自分の召しを忠実に務めることでわたしたちの光を輝かせます。また他の誰かに尽くすことでわたしたちの光を輝かせるのです。

We let our light shine by being friendly to those we meet.  We let our light shine by being an example of a humble follower of Jesus Christ.  We let our light shine by introducing others to the gospel.

私たちは出会う人々に親しくすることでわたしたちの光を輝かせ、イエス・キリストに謙遜に従うものとしての模範になることでわたしたちの光を輝かせるのです。私たちは他の誰かに福音を紹介することでわたしたちの光を輝かせるのです。

Why are we told to “let our light so shine”?  

どうして「わたしたちの光を輝かせる」よう言われたのでしょう？

We are told to “let our light so shine” that other people will “see our good works”.  When people see our good works, they will “glorify your Father which is in Heaven”.  This means that, through our example, other people will want to know about the gospel.  

私たちは「わたしたちの光を輝かせ」他の誰かが「あなたがたの善い行いを見る」よう言われました。誰かが私たちの良い行いを見るとき、彼らは「天におられるあなたがたの父をあがめる」のです。それは私たちの模範によって他の誰かが福音について知りたいと思うようになることです。

We will be like the lighthouse.  We will be able to help guide people into the safety of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  We will be able to help them receive the blessings of the gospel.  They will then be able to “glorify your Father who is in Heaven”.

私たちは灯台のようになるのです。私たちはイエスキリストの福音という安全な道へと人々を導く助けができるのです。私たちは彼らが福音の祝福を受けれるよう助けることが出来るのです。そして彼らは「天におられるあなたがたの父をあがめる」ことが出来るのです。

I know that we can all be good examples of followers of Jesus Christ.  I know that we have many opportunities each day to “let our light so shine”.  I know that it is through small and simple things that we can bring the gospel to those who are searching.  I know that even our small efforts to be a good example can have a powerful effect on those around us.  I know that we can do this!

私たちは皆イエス・キリストの従者の良い模範になれると知っています。私たちには毎日「わたしたちの光を輝かせる」多くの機会がありますし、小さく簡単な事から探し求める人々に福音をもたらすことができると知っています。私は良い模範であろうとするどんな小さな努力でも周りの人々に力強い影響を与えることが出来ると知っています。それが出来ると知っています。

Let’s work hard this week to be good “lighthouses”.  May we “let our light so shine” in everything that we do this week.
