だから、わたしの愛する同胞よ、あなたがたが悔い改めて、十分に固い決意をもって神のもとに来て、神があなたがたを心にかけてこられたと同じように、あなたがたも神に堅くつして離れないように、わたしはまじめな言葉であなたがたに進める。神の憐れみの腕が、昼の光の中であなたがたに伸べられている間、あなたがたの心をかたくなにしてはならない。ヤコブ書５：６

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I beseech you in words of soberness that ye would repent, and come with full purpose of heart, and cleave unto God as he cleaveth unto you.  And while his arm of mercy is extended towards you in the light of the day, harden not your hearts. Jacob 6:5

In this scripture, Jacob teaches us about our duty and responsibility in this life.  He tells us that we must do four things.

この聖句ではヤコブがこの世での私たちの義務と責任について教えています。私たちには行わねばならないことが四つあると言っています。

First, he tells us that we must repent.  All of us have sinned.  All of us have made mistakes. All of us need the blessings of repentance.  This is the first step on the path back to our Heavenly Father.

まず、私たちは悔い改めねばならないと教えています。私たちはすべて罪を犯します。間違いを犯します。私たちは皆、悔い改めの祝福を必要としています。これは天父のもとにもどる道の第一歩なのです。

Next, he tells us to “come with full purpose of heart”.   This means that we are to really repent.  We cannot just say we repent.  We must change our hearts.  We must really want to make changes in our lives.  We must take action to correct our bad habits.

次にヤコブは「十分に固い決意をもって神のもとに来る」よう教えています。これは私たちの真の悔い改めを意味します。悔い改めますというだけではだめなのです。私たちの心を変えなければなりません。私たちは生活を変えたいと強く望んでいなければなりません。悪い習慣を断ち切るために「行動」を起こさねばなりません。

Third, Jacob tells us that we must “cleave unto God”.  To “cleave” means to hold very tightly to something.  In this case, it means that we must keep all the commandments.  Sometimes, we say “hold to the iron rod”.  

３つ目にヤコブは「神に堅くつして離れないよう」にしなければならないと教えました。英語の「cleave」とは何かにしっかりつかまっているという意味です。この場合私たちはすべての戒めを守らねばならないという意味です。時折、私たちは「鉄の棒に捕まる」とも言います。

Finally, he tells us that we must “harden not your hearts”.  This means that we need to be humble.  It means that we need to listen to the promptings of the Spirit.  It means that we need to be obedient.  It means that we need to do what God wants us to do, not what we want to do.  It means waiting for the promised blessings.

最後に彼は「心をかたくなにしてはならない」と教えています。それは謙遜でなければならないと言う意味です。私たちは御霊のささやきに耳を傾ける必要があるということです。それは従順である必要があるという意味です。私たちが望むことではなく、神様が私たちに望んでおられることをする必要があるという意味です。そして（神が）約束してくださった祝福を待つという意味です。

Jacob reminds us that God is waiting for us to repent and keep his commandments.  He says that we should “cleave unto God as he cleaveth unto you.”  

ヤコブは神様は私たちが悔い改め、戒めを守るのを待っておられるということを思い起こさせています。彼は「神があなたがたを心にかけてこられたと同じように、あなたがたも神に堅くつして離れないよう」にと言っています。

God is our Heavenly Father.  He loves each one of his children.  He knows each one of his children.  His only desire is that each of his children will repent and keep the commandments.  When we repent, we then receive all the blessings that God has promised to us.

神は私たちの天の御父です。神は神の子供たち一人ひとりを愛しておられます。神は神の子供たち一人ひとりをご存知です。神の唯一の望みは神の子供たち一人ひとりが悔い改めて戒めを守るということです。私たちは悔い改めるとき神が私たちに用意されたすべての祝福を受けるのです。

I know that these things are true.  I know that we need to repent.  I know that we need to “cleave unto God”.  I know that God loves us and wants to help us.  I know that if we do these things that Jacob taught, we will be blessed.

私たちはこれらが真実だと知っています。私たちは（皆）悔い改めが必要だと知っています。私たちは「神に堅くつして離れないよう」にしなければならないことを知っています。神は私たちを愛しておられ、助けたいと思っておられることを知っています。ヤコブが教えたこれらのことを行うならば、私たちは祝福されると知っています。
