Therefore, dearly beloved brethren, let us cheerfully do all things that lie in our power; and then may we stand still, with the utmost assurance, to see the salvation of God, and for his arm to be revealed. Doctrine & Covenants 123:17
In this scripture, the Prophet Joseph Smith teaches the early Saints about their duties. We can learn about our own duties from this scripture, too. There is good counsel in it for us today.
この聖句では預言者ジョセフ・スミスが初期の聖徒らに彼らの義務について教えています。私たちもこの聖句から私たち自身の義務について学ぶことが出来ます。その中には今日の私たちにとってよい助言があります。
We are taught in this scripture that it is our duty to “do all things that lie in our power”.
私たちはこの聖句で、「わたしたちの力の限りすべてのことを行う」ことがわれわれの義務であると教えられています。
We are not expected to perform a great miracle. We are not expected to baptize hundreds of people. We are not expected to convince everyone that the gospel is true.
私たちは偉大な奇跡を行うようにとは期待されていません。何百という人をバプテスマするようにとか、すべての人に福音が真実であると説得するようにとも期待されていません。
But we are expected to do everything that we can do. The Lord has given each of us talents and abilities. He gives each of us callings and opportunities to serve. He gives each of us challenges to overcome.
しかし私たちは出来るすべてのことを行うようにと期待されています。主は私たち一人ひとりに才能と能力をお与えになりました。主は奉仕する責任と機会をくださり、克服すべき苦難を私たちにくださいます。
Our test in this life is to see if we will “do all things that lie in our power”. Before we came to this earth, we promised that we would do that. We promised we would work hard. We promised that we would do our best.
この世での私たちのテストは「わたしたちの力の限りすべてのことを行う」かどうか見られることです。この地上に来る前、それを行うと約束しました。一生懸命に行うと約束しました。そして最善を尽くすと約束しました。
And how are we instructed to “do all things that lie within our power”? We are taught by the Prophet Joseph Smith that we are to do all these things “cheerfully”. We are not to treat our challenges or our callings as burdens. We are to do our best cheerfully.
私たちは「わたしたちの力の限りすべてのことを行う」ため、どのようにな指導を受けたでしょう。預言者ジョセフ・スミスによって「喜んで」すべてのことを行うようと教えられました。受けている苦難や責任を重荷として扱ってはいけません。喜んで最善を尽くすのです。
That word “cheerfully” is very important. It changes the whole meaning of our duty. It turns burdens into opportunities. It turns trials into growing experiences. It turns needs of others into service opportunities.
「喜んで」という言葉はとても大切です。それは我々の義務をまったく新しい意味に変えるのです。重荷を機会に変え、試練を成長する経験に変え、他の人の必要を奉仕の機会へと変えてくれます。
If we fulfill our callings and assignments “cheerfully”, we will truly be following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ.
もし責任と任務を「喜んで」遂行するならば、まことに救い主イエスキリストの模範に従っていることなのです。
And what is the blessing we are promised if we do all these things? We are promised that “we can stand still”. What does that mean?
そしてこれらすべてを行うときに約束された祝福は何でしょう。私たちは「（確信をもって）待ち受け」ると約束されています。これはどういう意味でしょう？
I think it means that we can have confidence in our place before the Lord. We can “stand still”, knowing that we have fulfilled our duty properly.
それは主の前に私たちが居る場所に自信が持てるという意味だと思います。私たちが正しく義務を果たしたと知り「待ち受ける」ことが出来ます。
If we have done all that we can, we are promised that we will then see the arm of the Lord revealed. When we have done all that we can, the Lord can then take over. Great miracles happen after we “do all things that lie in our power”.
我々が出来るすべてをした時、神の腕が現されるのを見ることが出来ると約束されました。我々が出来るすべてをした時、主がその後の面倒を見てくださいます。「わたしたちの力の限りすべてのことを行う」時、偉大な奇跡が起こります。
Moroni said the same thing, “for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith”.
モロナイは同じことを述べています、「信仰が試されてから出なければ、証は得られないからである」（エテル12:6）と。
May we work hard this week to do all things that lie in our power. May we follow the counsel giving by the Prophet Joseph Smith. May we do our best in all our assignments. And, let’s do those things cheerfully.
今週も私たちの力の限りすべてのことが出来ますように。預言者ジョセフ・スミスの助言に従え、私たちの任務に最善を尽くせますように。そして喜んでそれらを行えますように。
I know that if we do this, we will receive the promised blessings. I know that we will be able to accomplish all that the Lord has asked us to do. I know that we will be able to “stand still”.
それを行うならば約束された祝福を受けると知っています。私は主が私たちになすよう頼まれたことすべてを成し遂げることができると知っています。（確信をもって）待ち受けることができると知っています。
