記録を保存するのはわたしが愚かだからであると、あなたは思うかもしれない。しかし見よ、わたしはあなたに言う。小さな、簡単なことによって大いなることが成し遂げられるのである。そして、小さな手段が度々知者を辱める。主なる神は偉大な永遠の目的を達するために、様々な手段によって事を行われる。また、ごく小さな手段によって、主は知者を辱め、また多くの人を救われる。アルマ第３７章：６－７

Now ye may suppose that this is foolishness in me; but behold I say unto you, that by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small means in many instances doth confound the wise.  And the Lord God doth work by means to bring about his great purposes; and by very small means the Lord doth confound the wise and bringeth about the salvation of many souls.   Alma 37:6-7

In this scripture, Alma is giving his son Helaman instructions about keeping the records of the people.  He tells Helaman that it is very important to keep the record.  Alma tells him that, even though it may seem like a small task, it will have great results.

この聖句ではアルマが息子ヒラマンに民の記録を残すよう指示しています。アルマはヒラマンに記録を残すことが非常に大切だと教え、たとえそれが小さな作業に見えても偉大な結果をもたらすと教えています。

The important message for us in this scripture is in the words “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass”.

この聖句で大切なメッセージは「小さな、簡単なことによって大いなることが成し遂げられるのである」という文面です。

What are the “small and simple things”?

何が「小さな、簡単なこと」なのでしょう？

I have never moved a mountain.  I have never called down fire from heaven.   I have never caused a great famine.

私は山を動かしたことなどありません。天から火を呼んだ事もありません。大きな飢餓を起こしたこともありません。

But, I have taught a Sunday School class.  I have visited my home teaching families.  I have worked on Church welfare projects.  I have helped to clean the chapel.  I have taken food to someone who was sick.  I have given a Book of Mormon to someone.  I have borne my testimony.  I have served in my callings.

しかし日曜学校で教えたことはあります。ホームティーチング家族を訪問したこともあります。教会の福祉活動で働いたこともあります。教会堂の清掃をしたこともあります。病気の誰かに食事を持っていったこともあります。モルモン書を誰かにあげたこともあります。自分の証を述べたこともあります。自分の責任を果たしたこともあります。

All of you have done these things, too.  

皆さんもこれらのことをしたことがあるでしょう。

These things, and many more like them, are the “small and simple things” that the Lord uses to accomplish his great things.

このような、また他に似たようなことは主が大きな事柄を成し遂げるのに使われる「小さな、簡単なこと」なのです。

Let’s compare the work of the Lord to the rain.  When it rains, each individual rain drop is very small and insignificant.  But when thousands of small rain drops come, everything gets wet.  As the rain continues, there may be great floods.  

主の業を雨にたとえてみましょう。雨が降るとき雨一粒自体は小さくて些細なものです。しかし幾千という雨粒が降って来るときすべてのものは濡れてしまいます。雨が続くとき大きな洪水も起こります。

So it is in the work of the Lord.  Each of us can do only a few “small and simple things”.  But just like the rain, when thousands of “small and simple things” are done, a flood of righteousness comes that cannot be stopped.  Through our “small and simple things”, the Lord is able to bring about the salvation of many souls.

そうです、それが主の業なのです。各人ができることは「小さな、簡単なこと」ですが雨のように幾千もの「小さな、簡単なこと」が行われるとき、遮（さえぎ）ることのできない「良いこと」の洪水がやってきます。「小さな、簡単なこと」を通して主は多くの霊を救いに導くことができるのです。

May we understand how important it is for us to do our “small and simple things”.  May we not be discouraged because we feel we cannot accomplish some great task.  

「小さな、簡単なこと」を行うことの大切さを理解しましょう。大きな業ができないからといってがっかりしないようにしましょう。

Instead, let us remember it is through those “small and simple things” we each do that the Lord is able to accomplish his great work.  May we rejoice in being instruments in the hands of the Lord and, like the rain drops, each do our part in this great work.  

かわりに「小さな、簡単なこと」を通して主は多くの霊を救いに導かれることを思い起こしましょう。私たちが主の手の中にある器であること、また雨粒のように偉大な業のひとつである自分の役割を喜ぼうではありませんか。
