さて見よう、驚くべき業が、まさに人の子らの中に現れようとしている。。。あなたがたは神に仕えたいと望むならば、その業に召されている。教義と聖約４：１，３
Now behold, a marvelous work is about to come forth among the children of men….Therefore, if ye have desire to serve God ye are called to the work; Doctrine and Covenants 4:1,3
Section 4 of the Doctrine and Covenants is a short but very well-known scripture. It is often referred to as a “missionary” scripture. But, since all members of the Lord’s Church have a duty to help others find the gospel, it really applies to all of us.
教義と聖約、第四章は短いけれどよく知られており、時折「宣教師」の聖句と呼ばれています。けれど主の教会の全ての会員は人々が福音を見つけられるよう手助けをする義務を持っているので、この聖句は私たち全てにも当てはまるのです。
We are taught two important things in this scripture.
この聖句では二つ重要なことを教えています。
First of all, we are taught that the Lord is going to do a “marvelous work”. This marvelous work started in 1820 and has been growing ever since. We can see this today, particularly in the “marvelous work” that is happening with missionary work.
まず最初に、主が「驚くべき業」を行なわれると教えられています。この驚くべき業は1820年に始まり、それ以来進み続けています。今日、特に伝道活動の中にこの「驚くべき業」を見ることが出来ます。
The full-time missionary force has increased from about 50,000 missionaries to more than 80,000 missionaries. They are better prepared than before. They are eager to serve. They are finding great success in missionary work. This is truly a “marvelous work”.
フルタイム宣教師の勢いが約５万人から８万人以上に増加しています。彼らは以前にもましてよく準備できており、より熱心に働こうとしています。伝道活動の中で偉大な成功を見出しています。これはまさに「驚くべき業」なのです。
The second thing we are taught is about who can help in this “marvelous work”. We are taught that everyone who “has a desire to serve God” is called to serve. This is very interesting.
ふたつ目に、誰がこの「驚くべき業」の手助けが出来るかを教えています。「神に仕えたいと望む」誰もが神に召されると教えています。これはとても興味深いことです。
It does not say “only those who were born in the Church”. It does not say “only those who know the scriptures very well”. It does not say “only those who are able to talk easily with other people”. It does not say “only those who have an important calling”. It does not say “only those who are not shy”.
「教会員として生まれた者だけ」とは言っていません。「福音をよく知っている者だけ」とは言っていません。「他人と楽に話ができる者だけ」とは言っていません。「重要な（教会の）責任を持っている者だけ」とも言っていません。
It says “if ye have desire to serve God”. That is the only requirement.
「もし神に仕えたいと望むなら」と言っているのです。これが唯一求められる条件なのです。
This great work of salvation is the Lord’s work. He has asked us to help save his children. He is ready to help us as we serve. All we have to do is to act. All we have to do is to try.
この偉大な救いの業は主の業です。私たちは主の子供たちを救う手助けをするよう求められています。主は私たちが仕えるとき助けてくださる準備ができています。私たちがすべきことはただ行なうことです。ただやろうと努力することです。
We are told that we will be directed to those who are ready to receive the gospel. We are told that we will be given the words to say and the things to do. We are told that we will be blessed with the right words and the right actions. All we have to do is to take the first step.
私たちは福音を受け入れる準備が出来ている人びとのもとに導かれると言われています。私たちは言うべきことやなすべきことが与えられると言われています。私たちは正しい言葉と行いに祝福されると言われています。私たちがすべきことはただ第一歩を踏み出すことです。

When we were baptized, we made a covenant with the Lord to love him and to serve him. Many of his children are seeking the truth, but do not know how to find it. It is our duty to help them find the way back to the truth.
私たちはバプテスマを受けた時、主を愛し主に仕えると誓約を交わしました。多くの神の子供たちは真理を探していますがどのように見つけてよいかわからないのです。彼らが真理を見出す手助けをすることが私たちの務めなのです。
May we be more diligent in our duties. May we think seriously about what we can do to help someone else learn about the gospel. May we have the faith to move forward and to take action.
私たちの務めに勤勉でありましょう。人々が福音を学べるよう何ができるのか真剣に考えてみましょう。前進し実行する信仰を持ちましょう。
I know that if we will follow the simple steps in “Hastening the Work”, we will find success. We will find those whose hearts are prepared to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
「Hastening the Work」にあるステップに従うなら成果を見ることができると知っています。イエスキリストの福音を聞く準備の出来ている人々を見出すことができるのです。
