すると兄たちは、「あの木の所に通じている、父が見た鉄の棒は何を意味するのか」と言った。わたしは兄たちに、それは神の言葉であって、だれでも神の言葉に聞き従って、それにしっかりつかまる者は、決して滅びることがなく、また敵対する者の誘惑や火の矢も、彼らを打ち破って盲目とし、滅びに至らせることはないといった。ニーファイ第１章１５：２３－２４

And they said unto me: What meaneth the rod of iron which our father saw, that led to the tree?  And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast to it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction.  1 Nephi 15:23-24

We know that we are here to be tempted and to be tried.  We know that this is a time of testing.  We know that it will be difficult.

私達は誘惑され試されるためにここにいます。今は試しのときでそれは難しいものです。

We also know that our Heavenly Father loves us very much.  We know that He wants us to win.  We know that He will always help us.

私達は神様が私たちをとても愛してくださっていることを知っています。私たちに勝利を得てほしいと思っておられ、そして常に助けてくださることも知っています。

The only way we can make right choices is to understand what God wants us to do.  We need to learn about the commandments.  Then, we must keep the commandments.

私たちが正しい選択ができる唯一の方法は「神様が私たちに何を望んでおられるかを理解する」ことです。私たちは戒めを学び、それを守る必要があります。

In this scripture, Nephi teaches us that we have been given an “iron rod” to help us through this life.  He teaches us that the “iron rod” is the word of God.  As long as we hold tightly to the iron rod, we will be safe.  

この聖句では、この世で私たちを助けてくれる「鉄の棒」が与えられていることをニーファイが教えてくれました。「鉄の棒」とは神の言葉であり、それにしっかりつかまっている限り私たちは安全であると教えています。

That does not mean that we will not have temptations or trials.  Nephi also reminds us that Satan will send temptations and “fiery darts” to try to make us leave the iron rod.  Satan will try to blind us to the truth.

しかしそれは誘惑や試練を受けないという意味ではありません。サタンが私たちが「鉄の棒」から離そうと誘惑や「火の矢」を送り込んでくるとニーファイは教えています。サタンは真理から我々の目をくらませようとしています。

We all experience these “fiery darts of the adversary”.  Fiery darts can a disobedient child, sickness, the loss of a loved one, the loss of employment, or many, many other things.  

私たちは皆この「敵の火の矢」を経験します。「火の矢」は時には反抗的な子供だったり、病、愛する者の死、失業、ほかにもいろいろなことがあります。

Fiery darts hurt.  They cause us much pain.  Satan uses them to try to make us let go of the iron rod.  He knows that if he can make us let go of the iron rod, he has a chance to trick us.

火の矢は痛く、大きな痛みをもたらします。サタンはそれらを使い私たちが鉄の棒を手放すよう努力します。サタンは私たちが鉄の棒を手放しさえすれば、騙せることを知っています。

Notice that Nephi does not say that the fiery darts make us let go of the iron rod.  He says that the temptations and fiery darts cause us to be “blind”.  

ニーファイは火の矢が私たちを鉄の棒から手放させるとは言っていないことに注目してください。誘惑と火の矢が私たちを盲目にする原因になると言っているのです。

In other words, Satan tricks us by making us focus on the pain.  He cannot force us to let go of the iron rod.  Satan cannot make us do anything.  We each have a physical body.  He does not.  That makes us more powerful than he is.  All he can do is to try to trick us.  

言い換えれば、サタンは痛みに心を集中させることで私たちを騙すのです。サタンは私たちが鉄の棒を手放すことを強制することはできないのです。サタンは私たちに何一つ「させる」ことはできないのです。私たちはそれぞれ肉体の体を持っています。サタンは持っていません。これが私たちをサタン以上に強くしているのです。彼ができることは唯一私たちを騙すことだけなのです。

If he can make us let go of the iron rod, he can slowly lead us away from it.  That is how Satan works.  He tries to trick us with small things to get us to move just a little ways away from the iron rod.  If he can keep tricking us with small things, he will be able to lead us completely away from the word of God.  

サタンが私たちを鉄の棒から手放させれば、それからゆっくり離れさせることができるのです。サタンはそのように働きます。彼は私たちが鉄の棒からほんの少しだけ離れるよう小さなことを使ってだますのです。サタンは小さなことを使って私たちをだまし続けることで完全に神の言葉から離れさせることができるのです。

“It won’t matter this one time”.  “It is not really that bad”.  “Everyone is doing it”.  These are just some of the small things that Satan tries to trick us with.  He wants to blind us to the truth.

今一回だけなら大丈夫。そんなに悪いことではない。皆がやっている。それらはサタンが私たちを騙すのに使う小さなことの幾つかです。サタンは真理から我々の目をくらませようとしています。

All we have to do is to hold firmly to the iron rod.  Nephi promises us that if we hold to the iron rod, we will be protected.  He tells us that we will be safe and “never perish”.  

私たちが唯一すべきことは鉄の棒にしっかりつかまっていることです。ニーファイは私たちは鉄の棒につかまっている限り守られると約束しています。私たちは安全で「決して見捨てられることはない」のです。

May we work hard to always hold to the iron rod.  May we not let the temptations and fiery darts cause us to fail.  The word of God will always protect us and guide us.  May we make correct choices in even the small decisions of life.

鉄の棒にいつもしっかりつかまっているよう頑張ろうではありませんか。誘惑や火の矢が私たちを堕落、失敗させることがないようにしようではありませんか。神の言葉は私たちを常に守り導いてくれるのです。生活の中でどんな小さな決断でも正しい判断ができますように。
