見よ、現世は人が神にお会いする用意をする時期である。まことに、現世の生涯は、人が各自の務めを果たす時期である。アルマ章３４：３２

For behold, this life is the time for men to prepare to meet God; yea, behold the day of this life is the day for men to perform their labors.  Alma 34:32

As we come to the end of another year, it is a good time to look back and review our progress for the last year.  How did we do?  

今年も残すところ僅かとなり、この一年を振り返り自分の進歩を見直す良い時期となりました。皆さんは如何でしたか？

There were probably some things we did that were good.  There were things we did that helped strengthen our testimonies.  There are things we did that helped others.

おそらく良くできたことも幾つかあるのではないでしょうか。自分の証を強めるようなことや、誰かを助けることもあったことでしょう。

There are also probably some things that we did that were not so good.  There are probably a few things that we wish we had done differently.  There are probably some things that we need to improve in.

反対にあまり良く出来なかったこともあったかもしれません。中にはそうしなければよかった、別の方法で行なったらよかったと思うことや、改善が必要だと感じることもあったことでしょう。

In just a few days, we will be given a brand new year to use.  We cannot go back and change anything from the past year.  But we can go forward with renewed determination to be better.  We can start the new year with a commitment to do better.

あと何日もすれば可能性に満ちたまっさらな年がやってきます。私たちは過去に戻って何かを変えることなどできません。しかし私たちは良くなろうと新たな決意を持って前進することはできます。私たちはもっと良くしようと決意を持って新年を始めることは出来ます。

In this scripture, Alma reminds us how important our actions in this life are.  We came here to mortality to be tested.  We knew it would be hard.  We knew we would have many challenges and temptations while we were here.  But we also knew that if we were obedient to the commandments, we would be able to return and live with our Heavenly parents again.

この聖句でアルマはこの世での私たちの行いがいかに大切かを思い起こさせています。私たちは試しを受けるためにこの死すべき世にやってきました。それが如何に困難であるか知っていました。私たちはこの世に留まっている間、多くの試しや挑戦、誘惑を受けるであろうことを知っていました。しかし私たちは戒めに忠実であれば再び天父の元に戻り共に暮らせることも知っていました。

Even though at times it seems like this life goes on forever, it is really very short.  We do not know how long we will be allowed to stay here.  We do not know when our time here will be over.  We do know that we are each given a short period of time to “perform our labors”.

この人生が永遠に続くように見える時でも、実際はとても短いのです。私たちはどれ程この世に留まれるものか知りませんし、この世をいつ去ることになるのか知りません。しかし私たちは『各自の務めを果たす』ためにこの短い時期が与えられたことを知っています。

It is like being in school.  In school, we have many things to study.  We have many tests.  If we study hard and use our time wisely, we will do well on the tests. If we are lazy and do not study, we will not do well on the tests.

それは丁度、学校のようなものです。学校では私たちは学ぶべき事が沢山あります。多くのテストがあります。もし時間を賢明に使い一生懸命に勉強するならばテストは良くできるでしょう。反対に怠けて勉強しなければテストは良くできないでしょう。

It is the same thing in this life.  We are given the Gospel of Jesus Christ to study.  We have the scriptures, conference talks, and priesthood leaders to help us learn.  If we use our time wisely, if we keep the commandments, if we work hard, we will do well on our “final test”.  

この人生も同じ事です。私たちに学ぶようにとイエス・キリストの福音が与えられています。私たちには聖典や大会の話があり、神権指導者も学ぶ手助けをしてくれます。もし時間を賢明に使い、戒めを守り、熱心に働けば、私たちは「最後のテスト」では良くできるでしょう。

The Lord knows that this life is hard for us.  He knows that we will make a lot of mistakes.  Because he loves us so much, he gave us the great gift of repentance.  We all make mistakes.  We all need to repent.   We all need to do better.  

主はこの人生が困難であることをご存知です。私たちが多くの間違いを犯すこともご存知です。主は私たちをとても愛しておられるので悔い改めという素晴らしい贈り物をくださいました。私たちはみな間違いを犯しますので、全員悔い改める必要があります。私たちはみな進歩しなければなりません。

As we being a new year, may we look back and reflect on what we did during the past year.  May we resolve to repent of those things we did which were not right.  May we resolve to go forward with a new determination to keep the commandments and to be obedient.  

新年を迎えるにあたり、昨年の行いを振り返り、見つめなおすことができますように。行なってしまった間違いを悔い改める決意が持てますように。戒めを守り、従順であるという新たな決意をもって前進する決心が出来ますように。

I know that as we work hard to be obedient, the Lord will bless us and direct us.  That does not mean that we will not have any trials.  We know that we will each have many trials. But it does mean that we can have the blessings of the Lord to help us get through the difficulties and challenges of this life.  It does mean that we can be happy, even when we are experiencing difficult times.

従順であろうと頑張るならば主が私たちを祝福し導いてくださると私は知っています。それは試練を受けないと言う意味ではありません。私たちはみな多くの試練を経験することを知っています。しかし私たちは主の祝福を受け、この世での困難や挑戦をのりこえる助けを受けるという意味です。それはたとえ困難なときであっても私たちは幸福でいられるということです。

May we all have a wonderful new year, a year of improvement, a year of growth, a year of obedience, and a year of blessings.  

皆さん、良い年をお迎えください。新年が進歩の年、成長の年、従順の年、そして祝福の年となりますように。
