この青年はイエスに言った、「それはみな守ってきました。ほかに何が足りないのでしょう」。マタイ書１９：２０

The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?  Matthew 19:20

This scripture from Matthew is part of a conversation the Lord had with a rich young man.  The rich young man was righteous.  He wanted to improve.  He came to Jesus and asked him what he should do to have eternal life.  

マタイの福音書にあるこの聖句は主と裕福な青年との間で交わされた会話です。この裕福な青年は正しい人でした。進歩、成長したいと思っていました。彼はイエスのところに来て永遠の命を得るには何をしたら良いのかと尋ねました。

Jesus told him that he should keep the commandments, and listed several.  The young man replied that he had kept those commandments all his life.  He then asked Jesus an important question.  He asked, “What lack I yet?”

イエスは彼に戒めを守るべきたと言われ、幾つかの戒めを挙げられました。その青年は今までそれらの戒めはすべて守ってきたと答えました。そして彼はイエスに重要で意義深い質問をしました。「ほかに何が足りないのでしょう」。

The Lord told him if he wanted to be perfect, he should sell the things that he owned, give the money to the poor, and come and follow Jesus.

主は彼に完全になりたければ彼の持っている物をすべて売り払い、その金を貧しいものに分け与え、そしてイエスに従ってくるべきだと言われました。

This was not the answer the rich young man wanted to hear.  Instead of following the counsel given to him, he “went away sorrowing”.

それは裕福な青年が聞きたい答えではありませんでした。彼は受けた助言に従う代わりに「悲しみながら立ち去った」のでした。

This is an important question that each of us should be asking the Lord.  “What lack I yet?”.  

これは私たち一人一人が主に尋ねるべき意義深い質問です。「ほかに何が足りないのでしょう」と。

In the last General Conference, Elder Lawrence of the Seventy spoke about this very scripture.  He related stories of people who needed guidance from the Lord and had asked “What lack I yet?”.

前回の総大会で七十人のローレンス長老がまさにこの聖句のたとえについてお話されました。彼は、主から導きを必要としており「ほかに何が足りないのでしょう」と尋ねた人の話をされました。

He said that, in many cases, the people were very surprised by the answer they received.  In one case, a sister was told to stop complaining so much.  Another sister who was struggling was told to clean her room.  Elder Lawrence gave several other examples of individuals who had asked that important question and had been given very specific, very personal, and very surprising answers.

彼は人は往々にして受ける答えにとても驚くものだと話されました。例として、ひとりの姉妹はそんなに文句ばかり言うものではないと忠告されました。また悩み苦しんでいた別の姉妹は部屋をきれいにする様に忠告されました。ローレンス長老はほかにも同じようにこの意義深い質問をした結果として、具体的で明確、個人的な驚く答えを受けた幾人かの例をあげて話されました。

The people who followed the answer they received, even though it sometimes seemed unrelated to the problem they were struggling with, reported that following the answer helped get them back on the right path.

受けた答えが、時として今抱えている問題と直接関係ない様に見えても、それに従った人がその答えに謙虚に従うことが正しい道に戻る助けになったと証ししています。

When we asked for guidance, we must be willing to follow the answer when it comes.  For both of the sisters in Elder Lawrence’s talk, the answer seemed strange.  But they both had the faith to accept the answer and to follow the counsel given to them.  By doing this, they received the blessings that they needed.

私たちは導きを求めるとき、与えられる答えに従いたいという気持ちを持っていなければなりません。ローレンス長老の話にある二人の姉妹にとってその答えは奇妙に思えたことでしょう。しかし二人ともその答えを受け入れ、その勧告、助言に従うという信仰を持っていました。そうすることで彼らは必要な祝福を受けたのです。

If we want to improve, we also must asked the Lord, “What lack I yet?”.  Even more importantly, we must be willing to follow the answer when it comes.  Great blessings will come to us as we do this. 

私たちが進歩したければ、主に「ほかに何が足りないのでしょう」と尋ねればなりません。そして更に重要なのは私たちは答えがやってくるときに喜んでそれに従いたいという気持ちが必要なのです。そうすることで大いなる祝福がやってきます。

Let’s try this during this week.  Let’s all ask, with a sincere heart, “What lack I yet?” and seek the guidance of the Lord on how to improve our lives.  Let’s be willing to follow the answer when it comes, whether or not it matches what we expected to hear.  

今週そのように努力してみましょう。心から誠実に「ほかに何が足りないのでしょう」と尋ねましょう。そして私たちの生活をどうやって改善するか主に導きを求めましょう。答えが与えられる時、たとえそれが自分の期待していたものでなくても従いたいという気持ちを持ちましょう。

I know that the Lord wants us to be happy.  I know he wants us to improve.  I know he will guide us if we will ask him for help.  I know that blessings will come as we follow the counsel given to us by the Holy Ghost.

主は私たちに幸せになって欲しいと望んでおられることを私は知っています。主は私たちに進歩して欲しいと願っておられることを知っています。もし助けを求めるなら主は私たちを導かれることを知っています。私たちが聖霊を通して与えられる勧告に従うとき、祝福が与えられることを私は知っています。
