そしてこの版には、わたし自分のことと、真鍮の版に刻まれている聖文の多くを書き記す。わたしは聖文に喜びを感じるからである。わたしは聖文について心に深く考え、わたしの子孫の知識となる利益となるようにこれを書き記す。ニーファイ第二書４：１５

And upon these I write the things of my soul, and many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass.  For my soul delighteth in the scriptures, and my heart pondereth them, and writeth them for the learning and the profit of my children.  2 Nephi 4:15

We know that the Large Plates had a more detailed history of the kings and the wars of the people.  We also know that the Small Plates were reserved for more spiritual things.  In this scripture, Nephi explains why he made the Small Plates.  

大版には王制の詳細な歴史や人々の戦争について多く記録されていることを私たちは知っています。また小版には霊に関する事柄が多く記録されていることも知っています。この聖句ではなぜニーファイが小版を作ったのかが説明されています。

Nephi tells us that he wrote “the things of my soul” on the Small Plates.  He also wrote “many of the scriptures which are engraven upon the plates of brass”.  The plates of brass are similar to what we know today as the Old Testament.  

ニーファイは小版には「わたし自分のこと」を書き記したと述べています。また「真鍮の版に刻まれている聖文の多く」も書き記しました。この真鍮版は私たちが知っている今日の旧約聖書に似たものです。

Why did he do this?  It was not easy writing on metal plates.  It was hard work.  It required much effort.

なぜ彼はそのようなことをしたのでしょう。金属板の上に刻んで書き込むのは簡単なことではありません。大変な作業で努力を要します。

Nephi tells us that he did this work “for the learning and profit of my children.”    That means he did it for us, for our learning and for our profit.

ニーファイは「わたしの子孫の知識となり利益となるよう」これを書き記したと言っています。つまり私たちの知識となり利益となるようにそうしたのです。

If we do not read the scriptures, we cannot receive that learning.  We cannot receive the blessings that Nephi promised to us.  We cannot “delight in the scriptures”.

もし私たちが聖文を読まなければ知識を得ることはできません。ニーファイが約束したような祝福を受けることはできません。私たちは「聖文に喜びを感じる」ことはできないのです。

Nephi understood the great importance of the scriptures.  He said his “soul delighteth” in the scriptures.  He said his “heart pondereth them.”

ニーファイは聖文の偉大な重要性を理解していました。彼は聖文に「喜び」を感じ「（聖文について）心に深く考え」ると言っています。

He did not say that he read the scriptures for a few minutes on Sunday.  He did not say that he looked through the pages sometimes.  He did not say that he read a few verses when he had extra time.

彼は聖文を日曜日に数分だけ読むとは言っていません。ときどき幾つかのページに目を通すとも言っていません。彼は時間に余裕があるときに２，３節だけ読むとも言っていません。

He said that his heart pondered on the scriptures.  To “ponder” means to study deeply, to think about something seriously.  “Pondering” the scriptures is much more than just reading the scriptures.

彼は聖文について心に深く考えると言っています。「心に深く考える」とは深く学び、何かについて真剣に考えることです。聖文について「心に深く考える」とはただ聖文を読む以上のことなのです。

We know that reading the scriptures is important.  We know that reading the scriptures will help us through our trials.  We know that reading the scriptures will be for our “profit and learning”.

聖文を読むことは大切だと私たちは知っています。聖文を読むことで試練を乗り越えれると知っています。聖文を読むことは私たちの「知識となり利益となる」と私たちは知っています。

Let’s make a greater effort this week to not only read the scriptures, but to ponder the scriptures.  Let’s be like Nephi and let our soul delight in the scriptures.  Let’s find the learning that is there for us to receive.

今週もただ聖文を読むだけでなく、心に深く考えるようもっと努力しましょう。ニーファイを見習い聖文に喜びを感じるようにしましょう。私たちのために用意された知識を見つけましょう。

I know that our lives will be happier if we study the scriptures every day.  I know that as we read the scriptures, the Holy Ghost will give us answers to our problems.  I know that we can receive the guidance that we need as we ponder over the scriptures.

毎日聖文を学べば私たちの人生はより幸せなものになると私は知っています。聖文を読むとき、聖霊が私たちの抱える問題に答えを与えてくれると私は知っています。聖文について心に深く考えるとき、私たちに必要な導きを受けれることを私は知っています。
