さらにまた、わたしはあなたがたに言う。わたしはあなたがに戒めを与える。長老も、祭司も、教師も、また会員も、全ての人がわたしの命じたことを準備して成し遂げるために、勢力を尽くし、その手の労苦を尽くしなさい。教義と聖約３８：４０
And again, I say unto you, I give unto you a commandment, that every man, both elder, priest, teacher, and also member, go to with his might, with the labor of his hands, to prepare and accomplish the things which I have commanded. Doctrine and Covenants 38:40
This revelation was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith during a conference of the Church in 1831. In this revelation, the Lord teaches the early Saints many things. One thing in particular applies not only to the early Saints, but to us as well.
この啓示は1831 年、教会の大会にて預言者ジョセフスミスに与えられたものです。この啓示で主は当時の聖徒たちに多くの事がらを教えられました。特に一つの教えは当時の聖徒のみならず現在の私たちにも当てはまるものです。
The early Saints were given many new commandments. They had the assignment to start laying the foundation of the Church in this dispensation. There was much work that needed to be done. The early Saints were commanded to work hard to build up the Church.
初期の聖徒たちは新たな戒めを沢山受けていました。彼らはこの末日の時代に教会の基を据えるという務めを受けていました。なすべきことが多くありました。初期の聖徒は教会を築くため熱心に働くよう命じられていました。
For those early Saints, “working hard” often meant moving to a new place. They had to move to Kirtland, then to Nauvoo, then later to Salt Lake. Each time, they had to clear the land. They had to build houses. They had to plant crops. They had to make roads. And, they still had to preach the gospel and go on missions.
初期の聖徒にとって「熱心に働く」ことは時おり新しい土地に移住することを意味していました。彼らはカートランドへ、続いてノーブー、最後にソルトレークへと移住しました。毎回移住のたび、その土地を片付けねばなりませんでした。また家を建て、穀物を植え、道路を作らねばなりませんでした。そのうえ福音を教え、伝道活動にも出かけねばなりませんでした。
It was very difficult work.
それは非常に困難なことでした。
Today, our assignments are different. We don’t have to move to the wilderness and build a new city. We don’t have to build log cabins to live in. We don’t have to make roads or dig irrigation ditches.
今日、私たちに与えられている務めその当時のものとは異なっています。私たちは荒れ野に移住したり新しい町を作る必要はありません。住むための丸太小屋を建てたり、道路を作り側溝を掘ったりする必要もありません。
But, we do have the same commandment to “go to with our might” to “prepare and accomplish the things which I have commanded.”
しかし私たちも「勢力を尽くし」「主が命じられたことを準備して成し遂げる」という同じ命を受けています。
Our assignments may be different, but they are just as important. We have the same duty as those early Saints. We have the responsibility to build up the Church and to preach the gospel.
私たちの任務は違うかもしれませんが同じように重要なものです。私たちは初期の聖徒と同じ義務を持っているのです。教会を建て福音を教えるという責任を担っているのです。
Our assignments may be to teach a Primary class, or to visit our Home Teaching families, or to give a talk, or to visit the sick, or to give someone a copy of the Book of Mormon, or to sing in the choir, or to attend all our meetings, or to go to the Temple, or to find our ancestors, or to do many other things.
私たちには多くの務めがあります。初等教会で教えるとかホームティーチングの担当家族を訪問し、お話をしたり、病人を見舞ったり、モルモン書を誰かにあげたり、聖歌隊で歌ったり、すべての集会に出席したり、神殿に参入したり、先祖を探し出したり、他にも多くなすべきことがあります。
We are commanded to work as hard as we can to accomplish these things, just like the early Saints were. They completed their assignments. Now it is time for us to complete our assignments.
私たちはまさに初期の聖徒のようにこれらを達成するため出来る限りの努力をするよう命じられています。彼らはその務めを達成しました。今は私たちがその務めを達成するときなのです。
Let’s all work hard this week to follow the example of the early Saints and do our best to accomplish whatever assignments we are given. Let’s work hard to accomplish the things that the Lord has commanded us to do. Let’s work hard.
今週も初期の聖徒に習って熱心に働きましょう、私たちにどのような務めが与えられていようとそれを達成するため最善を尽くしましょう。勤勉に働きましょう。
I know that we will receive all the promised blessings if we keep the commandments of the Lord. I know that we will find joy in this life and eternal life in the life to come. I know that these things are true.
私は主の戒めを守ればすべての約束された祝福を受けることができると知っています。私はこの世で喜びを得、来る世で永遠の生命を受けることを知っています。私はこれらすべてのことが真実であると知っています。
