覚えておきなさい。わたしの同胞よ、覚えておきなさい。滅びる者は自分で滅び、罪悪を行う者は自分でそれを行うのである。なぜなら、あなたがたは自由であり、あなたがたは随意に行動することを許されているからである。見よ、神はあなたがたに知識を与えて、あなたがたを自由にしてくださったからである。ヒラマン書１４：３０
And now remember, remember, my brethren, that whosoever perisheth, perisheth unto himself; and whosoever doeth iniquity, doeth it unto himself; for behold, ye are free; ye are permitted to act for yourselves; for behold, God hath given unto you a knowledge and he hath made you free. Helaman 14:30
This scripture was given by Samuel, the Lamanite, when he was sent to preach to the Nephites in Zarahemla. At that time, the Nephites had become a wicked people. Samuel was sent to them to prepare them for the coming of the Savior.
この聖句はレーマン人サムエルがゼラヘムラに住むニーファイ人に教えるために召されたときに与えられたものです。その当時ニーファイ人は邪悪な民になっていました。サムエルは彼らを救い主の降臨に備えさせるために召されました。
In this scripture, Samuel reminds us of a very important principle of the gospel. The principle he teaches us about is free agency.
この聖句ではサムエルが私たちにとても大切な福音の原則を思い起こさせています。彼が教えた原則は「自由意志」についてです。
Free agency is the basis of all of the commandments and the teachings of the gospel. The Lord gives us commandments and instructions through his prophets. We are taught correct principles. We know what is good and what is bad.
自由意志は戒めと福音の教えのすべての基盤です。主は私たちに神の預言者を通して戒めや教え、指示をお与えになります。私たちは正しい原則を教わり、何がよく、何が悪いかを知っています。
But the Lord will never force us to do anything.
しかし主は私たちがすることを強制されることは決してありません。
We are always free to choose the path we want to take. We can choose good or we can choose evil.
私たちはいつでも自由に自分の進む道を選べます。私たちは善を選ぶことも悪を選ぶことも出来るのです。
The Lord promises us great blessings if we choose good. Satan tries to trick us and tempt us to choose evil, but even Satan cannot force us to choose evil. We are free to make our own choice.
主は私たちが善を選ぶ時には大きな祝福を約束しておられます。サタンは私たちを騙し、悪を選ぶようにそそのかしますが、サタンですら私たちを悪を選ぶことを強制することはできません。私たちは自由に選択をすることが出来るのです。
While we are free to make our choice, we are not free to choose the results. The results of our choices come as part of that choice. If we choose good, we will always receive the promised blessings. If we choose evil, we will always receive the punishment.
私たちは自由に選ぶことができるとはいえ、その結果を選ぶ自由はありません。選択の結果は選択過程の一部としてやってきます。もし善を選べば常に約束された祝福を受けます。もし悪を選べばとうぜん罰を受けることになります。
The blessings or punishments do not come immediately. They will come someday, though. We cannot change that fact.
祝福も罰もすぐにはやってきません。しかし、それらはいつか必ずやっています。私たちはその現実を変えることは出来ません。
Free agency makes us responsible for our own actions. We are the only ones who can choose what we will do. Whatever reward we are given will be based on our own choices.
自由意志により行動するとき自らその責任を負うことになります。私たち自分自身でしか自分の行動を選ぶことはできないのです。どのような報いを受けるかはすべて自分自身の選択によるのです。
Let’s work hard this week to make good choices. Let’s remember that we are free, that we can choose good, that we have been given knowledge.
今週も良い選択が出来るよう頑張りましょう。私たちは自由であること、善を選ぶことができること、知識が与えられていることを覚えていましょう。
I know that if we do this, we will, without fail, receive the promised blessings. I know that free agency is a wonderful thing.
私はそれを行うなら間違いなく約束された祝福を受けることを知っています。私は自由意志はすばらしいものだと知っています。
It is sad to see others, especially members of our own families, make bad choices, but that is their right. We need to keep moving forward and do all that we can to help them. But we cannot force anyone to make right choices. That is just part of this life.
他の誰か、特に自分の家族の誰かが間違った選択をしたことを見るのは悲しいことですが、それは彼らの（自由意志という）権利の結果なのです。私たちは前に向かって歩み続け、彼らを助けるため出来る限りのことをしなければなりません。しかし私たちはだれも良い選択をすることを強いることはできません。それはこの生涯で変えることのできないものなのです。
