Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to the awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in the eternal world. Alma 34:34
This scripture is from the message that Amulek gave when Alma and Amulek preaching to the poor people among the Zoramites. It contains a powerful message.
この聖句はアルマとアミュレクが貧しいゾーラム人の中で教えているときアミュレクが述べたメッセージです。それはとても力強いメッセージです。
Amulek was teaching the people that the time to repent is now. He taught them that this life is a time of trial and of testing. He taught them that we are given this life to prepare for the next life.
アミュレクは人々に悔い改める時は今であると教えています。彼はこの世は試しの時であり、私たちが次の世の準備をするためにこの世が私たちに与えられていることを教えました。
No one knows just how long they will be able to live in this life. Some people live for many decades, while others may only live a few minutes. Some people suffer from severe illness for many years before dying, while others who seem to be in good health die suddenly. We do not know how long our time will be on earth.
誰一人自分の寿命を知っている人はいません。ある人は長く生き、またある人は数分しか生きないかもしれません。重病のため死ぬまで苦しんだり、またある人は健康でいてある日突然死ぬこともあります。この地上でどれ程の時間を与えられているのか私たちにはわかりません。
Some people want all the promised blessings, but they also want to follow the practices of the world. They want to focus on all the popular things of the world without being limited by the commandments of God. They don’t want to give up the things that the world values. They think that they will have time to repent later on.
約束された全ての祝福を望んでいながらこの世のしきたりにも従いたいと望んでいる人がいます。彼らは神の戒めによる制限を気にせず、この世で流行っていることに関心を寄せています。この世でしか価値のない事柄を諦めようとせず、悔い改めをする時間は後で充分にあると考えているのでしょう。
Amulek explains that this is a false belief. He teaches us that when the day of our own death arrives, we cannot change and suddenly become righteous. He says that we will be the same type of person after we die as we are before we die.
アミュレクはこういった考えは間違いだと教えています。彼は私たち自身の死がやって来る時、突然善人に変わることなど出来ないと教えています。私たちは死んだ後も生前と同じような者であると述べています。
It is very hard for some people to recognize or to admit to themselves that someday they will die. As a society, no one wants to acknowledge the fact that we will all die someday. In times past, death was a constant companion. Because of poor health conditions, wars, primitive living conditions and other problems, most people were very acquainted with death. They saw death take away their loved ones frequently.
自分は必ず死ぬこと、またはそれを受け入れることの出来ない人がいます。今の社会では私たちは誰でもいつか死ぬという事実を受け入れたがりません。時が経てば死は身近に感じるようになります。健康を損なった状態や戦争、最低限の貧しい生活、そのほかの問題で殆どの人は死を身近に感じるようになります。
In today’s world, death does not happen as often. Perhaps a grandparent has died, or maybe someone died in a traffic accident, or a friend died after developing cancer. We try to pretend that death only happens to other people.
現代では死はそれほど頻繁には起こりません。例えば祖父母が亡くなったとか交通事故で誰かが亡くなった、友達の誰かが癌が進行して亡くなったなどでしょう。私たちは死は誰か他の人に起こる事だと思い込んでいます。
Satan tricks us into believing this. He does not want us to repent. He does not want us to receive the promised blessings. He works hard to convince us that there is plenty of time to repent.
サタンはそのように思わせています。彼は私たちに悔い改めて欲しくありません。彼は私たちに約束された祝福を受けて欲しくありません。彼は悔い改める時間は十分にあると私たちに思い込ませるよう躍起になっています。
Many people, perhaps even most people have a fear of death. But we know that death is simply a release for the trials and troubles of this life. It is the “final exam” that we have been studying for all during our lifetimes. It should be, for the righteous person at least, a time of peace. Just as in school, if we study and are prepared for a test, we do not need to worry, so it is in life. If we have kept the commandments, if we have repented of our sins and failings, if we are prepared for the “final exam”, we do not need to worry or to fear death.
多くの人、いや恐らく殆どの人が死に恐怖を持っています。しかし私たちは死は単にこの世の試しや苦難から解放されることに他ならないことを知っています。それは私たちがこの人生ですべてを学ぼうとしている過程の「最終テスト」なのです。それは少なくとも正しい人には安らぎの時なのです。学校のように勉強しテストに備えるならば恐れることは無いように、この人生も同じなのです。戒めを守り罪や間違いを悔い改め、「最終テスト」に備えるならば私たちは心配や死の恐れも持つ必要がないのです。
In the last few words of this scripture, Amulek gives us a great promise. He tells us that the same spirit which possesses our body when we die will possess our body in the eternal world.
この聖句の最後の数節でアミュレクは素晴らしい約束を残しています。彼は私たちの体を所有している同じ霊が私たちが死ぬ時、永遠の世界でも私たちの体を所有すると述べています。
For those who do not keep the commandments and who do not repent, this is a strong and fearful warning. If they have not repented, they will go into the eternal world with that same unrighteous spirit that they had in this world.
戒めを守らず悔い改めないものにとってこれは厳しく恐ろしい警告です。もし悔い改めなければ彼らは永遠の世界へこの世で持っていたと同じ罪深い霊を持って行くのです。
For those who love the Lord and who keep his commandments, this is the promise of a great blessing. It teaches us that if we have been faithful, if we have repented, if we have kept the commandments, we will always be righteous in the eternal world. We will have that same righteous spirit for eternity.
主を愛し戒めを守る者にはこれは素晴らしい祝福の約束です。もし忠実であれば、悔い改めれいれば、戒めを守っていれば私たちは永遠の世界でも正しい状態でいると教えています。私たちはその同じ正しい霊を永遠に所有できるのです。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember the warning given by Amulek. Let’s remember that this life will end someday for each one of us. Let’s remember that we will each face that “awful crisis” at some point in the future. Let’s remember that, if we are righteous, if we keep the commandments, if we repent in this life, we will keep that same righteous spirit in the eternities.
今週、アミュレクが教えた警告を忘れずに過ごしましょう。この人生の終わりが誰にもやって来ることを覚えていましょう。私たちの誰もがいつの日が「恐ろしい危機」に向き合うことを忘れないように。正しくあり、戒めを守り、この人生で悔い改めるなら私たちはこの同じ正しい霊を永遠に持ち続けることが出来ることを覚えていましょう。
