34 - The Japanese Mission Today - 現在の日本伝道部
In the past few discussions, we have reviewed the history of the Church in Japan. We first talked about the opening of missionary work in Japan. The first Japanese Mission was from 1901 to 1924. We next discussed the dark years, when the mission had to be closed, from 1924 to 1948. In our discussion last time, we talked about the re-opening of missionary work in Japan, beginning in 1948.In this final discussion, we will look at the events that have taken place in Japan since 1948.
Let’s start with the year 1955.
In 1955, how many missionaries do you think there were in all of Asia, including Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Phillipines. In 1955, there was a total of only 61 missionaries in all those countries combined. All of those 61 missionaries were in Japan. Japan was the only one of those countries where there were missionaries!
The Church wanted to bring the gospel to all the people of Asia. In 1955, Elder Joseph Fielding Smith was sent to Asia to organize two new missions, the Northern Far East Mission and the Southern Far East Mission. The Northern Far East Mission included all of Japan, Okinawa, and Korea. The Southern Far East Mission included Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.
The work was slow, but the number of members grew steadily. By 1968, Church membership had grown to the point where new missions could be created. In 1962, Korea was made its own mission. In 1968, Japan was divided into two missions. The Japan Mission included all of the eastern half of Japan, from about Hamamatsu all the way up to Wakanai in Hokkaido. The Central Japan Mission included all of the western half of Japan, plus Okinawa.
Missionary work progressed rapidly in that time period and soon more new missions were created. In 1970, both of the missions in Japan were divided. There were now four missions in Japan. 1970 was a memorable year for the Church in Japan. In that year, Elder Gordon B. Hinckley came to Japan and organized the Tokyo Stake, the first stake in all of Asia.
Just six years later, in 1976, President Spencer W. Kimball came to Japan and announced that a Temple would be built in Tokyo. At that time, there were only about 16 Temples in the whole world. The Tokyo Japan Temple was the 18th Temple to be dedicated.
I served my mission in the Japan Mission, with President Bills. President Bills was a salesman before he was called to serve as Mission President. When he first arrived in Japan, the former Mission President gave him a tour of the Mission Home. In one room, there were 3,000 copies of the Book of Mormon. The former Mission President said that he had just ordered 3,000 copies and that President Bills would not need to order any more during the three years that he was Mission President.
President Bills thought about that for a few minutes and then asked how many copies of the Book of Mormon the missionaries sold during a typical month. Usually, about 50 was the reply. President Bills thought the missionaries could do better. He began teaching us the importance of the Book of Mormon. He encouraged us to focus on distributing the Book of Mormon during our street meetings. Soon, with his encouragement, we began to place many more copies.
Someone had the idea to get some large boxes and paint them with pictures of the Bible and The Book of Mormon. We would take these large boxes to our street meetings. During 1968, the average number of Book of Mormons placed each month was 56. In 1969, the average number placed each month grew to 4,704. And in 1970, the monthly average was 8,558.
This was a time of great growth in the Church in all of Asia. The Japan Mission, the Japan Central Mission, the Taiwan Mission, and the Hong Kong Mission all watched the number of baptisms from each mission. It was not really a competition, but it was amazing to see the number of baptisms each month. In our mission, the mission goal was one baptism per missionary per month. I did not come close to that, but many missionaries did.
Today, the Church is strong in Japan, with 6 Missions, 4 Temples, many Stakes, and thousands of members. The work of the Lord will always move forward. It is a great blessing to be able to assist in the work of gathering scattered Israel in Japan.
