また、悪魔が人の子らを誘惑するのは必要である。そうでなければ、人の子らは自ら選択し行動する者とはならない。苦いことを経験しなければ、甘いことを知ることができないからである。教義と聖約　２９：３９

And it must needs be that the devil should tempt the children of men, or they could not be agents unto themselves; for if they should never have the bitter they could not know the sweet. Doctrine & Covenants 29:39

私たちは人生を歩んでいく中で、多くの試練や困難に遭遇します。時には痛みや苦しみを感じ、悲しみに打ちひしがれることもあります。ただ、できれば良いことだけが続けばいいのにと思うこともあります。

As we travel down the path of life, we have many trials and troubles.  Many times we have pain and suffering.  Many times we experience sorrow.  Many times we wish we could have only good things happen to us.

しかし、良いことだけを求めるのは、一見魅力的な考えのように思えますが、実際にはそれが私たちの本当の幸せにつながるわけではありません。主は私たち一人ひとりにとって最善の道をご存知です。私たちがどんな試練に直面しているのか、また、私たちの強さや弱さをすべて理解しておられます。

While it seems like a nice idea to want only good things to happen to us, that is not the way for us to be happy.  The Lord knows what is best for each of us.  He knows what our own trials are.  He knows what our own strengths and weaknesses are.

この聖句が教えているのは、人生の試練や悲しみがあるからこそ、本当の喜びを理解できるということです。人生の「苦しみ」を経験することで、「喜び」の価値を知ることができるのです。

In this scripture, we are taught that it is only because of the trials and sorrows that we have in this life that we can understand true happiness.  It is by experiencing the “bitter” times of life that we can learn to appreciate the “sweet” times of life.

主は、悪魔が私たちを誘惑し、試すことをお許しになっています。私たちは時には誘惑に打ち勝つことができますが、時には弱さのために誘惑に負けてしまうこともあります。しかし、大切なのは、私たちには常に選択の自由があるということです。サタンは私たちを無理やり罪に引き込むことはできません。彼には肉体がなく、私たちの意志に対して直接の力を持っていません。彼が私たちを支配することができるのは、私たち自身がそれを許した時だけなのです。

The Lord allows the devil to tempt us and to try us.  Sometimes we are strong and are able to resist the temptations.  Other times, we are weak and we give in to temptation.  We are always given a choice.  Satan cannot make us give in to temptation.  He does not have a physical body.  He does not have any power over us, unless we let him.  We always have the right to choose.

私たちが誘惑に負けてしまうと、その罪の代償を払うことになります。そして、自分自身の経験を通して、罪が最終的には不幸をもたらすことを学びます。サタンは、誘惑をとても魅力的で、楽しく、素晴らしいもののように見せかけます。しかし、彼の目的は、私たちを不幸にすることです。彼自身が絶望の中にあり、決して幸せになることができません。そのため、私たちをも不幸にしようとします。

When we give in to temptation, we have to pay the penalty of that sin.  We learn from our own experience that sin will always result in our being unhappy.  Satan tries to make the temptation seem so attractive, so desirable, so enticing.  He knows that if we give in to his temptations we will be unhappy.  He is miserable and has no hope of ever being happy.  All he can do is to try to trick us into being unhappy too.

主は、私たちが皆、過ちを犯すことをご存知です。人生には誘惑があり、時には失敗してしまうこともあります。しかし、主は私たちを深く愛しておられます。その愛の故に、たとえ誤った選択をしても、自ら学び成長できるように、選択の自由を与えてくださっています。

The Lord knows that we will all make mistakes.  He knows that this life is full of temptations and that sometimes we will fail.  He knows that sometimes we will make bad choices.  But he loves us so much that he lets us choose, even when we choose bad things.  He knows that we can only learn through our own experience.

私たちの中には、多くの間違いを重ねて初めて、「正しい選択をした方がずっと幸せになれる」と気づく人もいるかもしれません。良い選択をすることは、簡単ではありません。たとえば、教会の集会に行くよりも家にいる方が楽かもしれません。什分の一を納めるよりも、他のことにお金を使う方が楽しいかもしれません。神殿に行くよりも、行かない方が簡単かもしれません。

For some of us, it seems like it takes a lot of bad choices before we start to learn that we will be much happier if we make good choices.  Good choices often seem hard.  It is easier to stay home from Church than to attend our meetings.  It is easier not to pay our tithing.  It is easier not to go to the Temple.

しかし、「楽な選択」が私たちを本当の幸せへ導くとは限りません。一時的に満足することはあっても、それは長続きしません。本当の幸福は、戒めを守ることから生まれます。本当の幸福は、従順になることから生まれます。本当の幸福は、正しい選択をすることから生まれます。

But the easy choice is usually not the choice that will make us happy.  It may seem like we are happy but it is only temporary.  True happiness only comes by keeping all the commandments.  True happiness only comes from being obedient.  True happiness only comes from making right choices.

今週、私たちが毎日正しい選択をできるように努力しましょう。まずは一時間、正しい選択をすることから始めてみましょう。そして次の一時間、その次の一時間と積み重ねていきましょう。やがて、一日を通して正しい選択ができるようになります。そして翌日もまた同じように続けてみましょう。もし途中で失敗しても、あきらめないでください。もう一度、一時間からやり直せば大丈夫です。まっすぐな道を歩み、正しい選択を続けましょう。「正しいことを選ぶ」 ことこそが、真の幸福への道なのです。

May we work hard this week to make right choices every day.  Start with making right choices for one hour.  Then a second hour.  Then a third hour.  Pretty soon, you will have made right choices for a whole day.  Then start on the next day.  If you fail, don’t give up.  Just start with one hour again.  Keep on the right path.  Make right choices.  Choose the right.  This is the path to true happiness.
