見よ、わたしは律法であり、光である。わたしに頼り、最後まで堪え忍びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは生きるであろう。最後まで堪え忍ぶ者に、わたしは永遠の命を与えるからである。第三ニーファイ１５：９

Behold, I am the law, and the light.  Look unto me, and endure to the end, and ye shall live; for unto him that endureth to the end will I give eternal life.  3 Nephi 15:9

第三ニーファイに記されている、救い主がニーファイ人を訪問された記録は、モルモン書のハイライトです。その救い主の驚くべきみ業は、私たちが主への信仰をさらに深めるために書かれています。主がニーファイ人に偉大なことを示されたのは、彼らの信仰のためであり、ユダヤ人には信仰が欠けていたために示すことができなかったことを示されたのです。

The account of the Savior’s visit to the Nephite people, as recorded in 3 Nephi, is the highlight of the Book of Mormon.  The marvelous works of the Savior are written for us, to help us have greater faith in the Lord.  We are told that the Lord was able to show great things to the Nephites because of their faith, things that he could not show to the Jews because of their lack of faith.

新約聖書でよく知られた聖句の多くが、第三ニーファイで繰り返され、新約聖書には出てこない聖句もあります。これらの聖句は、何世紀にもわたって言語が翻訳される際に生じる意味の喪失がなく、純粋なまま与えられています。

Many of the familiar scriptures from the New Testament are repeated in 3 Nephi, along with some that do not appear in the New Testament.  These scriptures are given in their purity, without the loss of meaning that comes as languages are translated from one to another over centuries.

この聖句の中で、主は僅かな言葉で多くの教訓を教えておられます。まず、主の言葉は私たちが従わなければならない律法であると思い起こさせています。救い主は真実で正しい教義を教えておられます。それは御父の教義であり、すべての真理の源です。それは私たちが証を築くことができる確かな土台です。

In this scripture, the Lord teaches us many lessons in just a few words.  He begins by reminding us that his word is the law by which we must live.  The Savior teaches us true and correct doctrine.  It is the doctrine of the Father.  It is the source of all truth.  It is the sure foundation on which we can build our testimonies.

次に主は、御自身が光であると教えておられます。昼と夜が違うように、光と闇も違います。光は私たちに善、前向きなこと、平安、幸福を思い起こさせます。救い主はすべての光の源です。主が与えてくださった戒めを守ることによって、私たちは自分の生活に福音の光を享受できるのです。

Next, the Lord teaches us that he is the light.  Just as day and night are different, light and darkness are different.  Light makes us think of good, of positive things, of peace, and of happiness.  The Savior is the source of all light.  It is by keeping the commandments that he has given us that we can enjoy the light of the gospel on our own lives.

私たちは救い主に頼るようにと言われています。ネルソン大管長は「日の栄えの考え」を持つように勧め、同じ原則を教えています。救い主に頼るとき、私たちは救い主とその戒めについて学びます。救い主を生活の中心に置き、救い主にもっと似た者となれるよう努力します。

We are told to look unto the Savior.  President Nelson has taught us this same principle when he urges us to “think celestial”.  As we look unto the Savior, we will learn about him and his commandments.  We will keep the Savior in the center of our lives.  We will strive to become more like him.  

おそらくすべての戒めの中で最も難しいのは，最後まで堪え忍ぶという戒めです。私たちは，一日かそこらではなく、生涯にわたって主の戒めを守ることによって救い主への愛を証明します。試練や困難に耐えることによって、私たちは重要な教訓を学びます。耐えることによって、私たちは福音の知識を深めます。耐えることによって、私たちは救い主にさらに似た者となるのです。

Perhaps the most challenging of all commandments is the charge to endure to the end.  We prove our love of the Savior by keeping his commandments not just for a day or so, but for our entire lives.  It is through enduring trials and hardships that we learn important lessons.  It is through enduring that we grow in the knowledge of the gospel.  It is through enduring that we become more like our Savior.

この聖句にある主の偉大な約束は、これらのことを行う者には永遠の命が与えられるということです。この聖句では、これがすべての賜物の中で最も偉大なものであると教えられています。これは、私たちが目指す目標です。天の御父と救い主イエス・キリストとともに永遠に生きることができるということは、この世のすべての苦しみや困難よりも価値のある報いです。これは、私たちが毎日心に抱くべき目標です。主に頼るとき、永遠の命というすばらしい祝福へと導く聖約の道にしっかりととどまることができるのです。

The great promise of the Lord in this scripture is that those who do these things will be given eternal life.  We are taught in the scriptures that this is the greatest gift of all.  This is the goal that we are all working toward.  Being able to live for eternity with Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ is a reward that is worth more than all the suffering and hardships of this life.  This is the goal that we should have in our hearts every day.  As we look unto the Lord, we will be able to stay firmly on the covenant path that leads to the wonderful blessing of eternal life.

新しい週が始まります。すべてのことにおいて主に頼ることを忘れないようにしましょう。「日の栄の考えを持つ」ことを忘れないようにしましょう。救い主を生活の中心に据えるために最善を尽くしましょう。主の律法を守り、主の光の中に留まりましょう。最も重要なことは、最後まで耐え忍び、永遠の命という偉大な祝福にふさわしくあることです。

As we go through this week, let’s remember to look unto the Lord in all things.  Let’s remember to “think celestial”.  Let’s do our best to keep the Savior at the center of our lives.  Let’s keep his law and stay in his light.  Most importantly, let’s endure to the end and be worthy of the great blessing of eternal life.
