皆、すべてのことについて熱心でありなさい。怠惰な者は、悔い改めて自分の行いを改めなかぎり、教会の中でいるべき場所を得られないであろう。教義と聖約７５：２９
Let every man be diligent in all things. And the idler shall not have place in the Church, except he repent and mend his ways. Doctrine & Covenants 75:29
1832年1月、預言者ジョセフ・スミスはミズーリ州への旅からオハイオ州に戻りました。そして1月25日、教会の大会が開かれ、大祭司の会長の召しが正式に承認され、ジョセフ・スミスはその召しに聖任されました。
In January of 1832, the Prophet Joseph Smith had returned from his journey to Missouri and was now back in Ohio. In January 25th, a conference of the Church was held and the position of President of the High Priesthood was officially sanctioned and Joseph Smith was ordained to this calling.
福音を宣べ伝えるために派遣された多くの長老たちは、努力を尽くしたにもかかわらず、多くの人々にメッセージを拒まれ、結果に失望しました。そこで彼らは、より効果的に奉仕する方法について、預言者に指示を求めました。
A number of the Elders who had been sent out to preach the gospel were disappointed in the results of their efforts. Most people had rejected their message. They asked the Prophet for instructions on how they could do better.
そのとき、主は預言者ジョセフ・スミスを通して、落胆しないようにと励ましを与えられました。主は、重要なのは改宗者の数ではなく、熱心に、最善を尽くして奉仕することだと教えておられます。
The Lord counsels them, through the Prophet Joseph Smith, not to be discouraged. The important thing, the Lord said, was not the number of converts that they made. The important thing was that they served diligently and with their very best efforts.
16節には、主からの次のような約束があります。「忠実な者はすべてのものに打ち勝ち、終わりの日に高く上げられるであろう。」
In verse 16, the Lord gives this promise. “And he who is faithful shall overcome all things, and shall be lifted up at the last day”.
そして29節では、主は改めて明確に、勤勉に奉仕するようにと強く勧めておられます。奉仕しようとする気持ちのない者に対しては、厳しい警告が与えられています。
Most importantly, in verse 29, the Lord again says very clearly that we are to serve diligently. Those who are not willing to serve are given a serious rebuke.
主は「そして怠惰な者は教会の中でいるべき場所を得られないであろう」と言われました。
The Lord says, “And the idler shall not have place in the Church”.
この警告は、初期の聖徒たちと同じように、今日の私たちにも当てはまります。
This warning applies to us today, just as it did to those early saints.
私たちの日常生活と、初期の聖徒たちの生活を比べると、私たちがどれほど恵まれているかに気づかされます。私たちは荒野を開拓して新しいコミュニティを築く必要も、作物が育つかどうかに不安を抱きながら生活する必要もありません。教会のために何百マイル、何千マイルも歩くことも求められていません。
If we compare our daily lives to theirs, we can see how very blessed we are. We are not struggling to build a new community in the wilderness. We are not dependent upon what we can grow on a farm for our food. We are not asked to walk hundreds or even thousands of miles for the Church.
今、私たちが求められているのは、召しに応じて毎週少しの時間を捧げることです。信仰において助けを必要としている人々に心を向けることです。イエス・キリストの弟子としての模範となることです。
We are simply asked to spend a few hours each week serving in our own callings. We are asked to minister to the needs of those whose faith may be weak. We are asked to stand as examples of disciples of Jesus Christ.
私たちは毎日祈るように求められています。教会の集会に出席するように、また聖文と総大会の説教を研究するように求められています。
We are asked to pray each day. We are asked to attend our Church meetings. We are asked to study the scriptures and the General Conference talks.
たしかに、私たちは皆、忙しい毎日を送っています。しかし、あなたは自分の人生のほうが初期の聖徒たちよりも困難だったと、彼らに納得させられるでしょうか？教会で奉仕する時間がなかったと説明できるでしょうか？同じように熱心に奉仕しなくても、同じ祝福を受けるべきだと説得できるでしょうか？
Yes, we all have busy lives. But do you think you will be able to convince one of those early members that your life was more difficult than theirs was? Do you think you will be able to convince them that you didn’t have any spare time to serve in the Church? Do you think you will be able to convince them that you should receive the same blessings as they will, if you do not serve just as diligently as they did?
主は、どこで奉仕するかではなく、どのように奉仕するかが重要であると繰り返し教えておられます。どのような召しであっても、忠実に、勤勉に奉仕するなら、主が約束された祝福をすべて受けることができます。主にとって、重要でない召しは一つもありません。
The Lord has repeatedly said that it is not where we serve, but how we serve that is important. It does not matter what our particular calling is. If we serve faithfully and diligently, we will receive all the promised blessings. No calling is unimportant.
新しい週が始まります。主への奉仕に、熱心かつ誠実に取り組んでいきましょう。怠惰にならず、どの召しも主にとって尊いものであることを忘れないようにしましょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s remember to be diligent in the service of the Lord. Let’s remember that we should not be idle. Let’s remember that every calling is important to the Lord.
