And he said, thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel; for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.  Genesis 32:28

In these chapters of Genesis, we are taught about the families of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob.  It is interesting to see that their families and their challenges are similar to our families and our challenges.

創世記のこれらの章で、私たちはアブラハムとイサク、そしてヤコブの家族について学びます。彼らの家族と彼らの試練が私たちと似ているのは興味深いことです。

We see conflicts between brothers, as Esau trades his birthright for a bowl of beans and then later becomes very angry with his younger brother Jacob.  We see jealousy between sisters, when Leah has several children before Rachel has any children.  We see parents sorrowing as they see their children make poor choices.  

エサウとヤコブの兄弟の間に対立がありました。エサウは長子の特権をレンズ豆の煮物と交換したものの、弟のヤコブに非常に腹を立てていました。ラケルに子供が生まれる前、レアにはすでに子供が何人もいたことで、姉妹の間に嫉妬がありました。子供たちが間違った選択をするのを見て、両親は悲しい思いをします。

We see families re-united after many years of anger, when Esau and Jacob forgive each other.  We see a father-in-law and a son-in-law re-united, as Laban and Jacob meet again after many years.

私たちは、エサウとヤコブがお互いを許し合うとき、長年の怒りの後に家族がひとつとなるのを見ます。ラバンとヤコブが何年も後に再会するとき、私たちは義父と婿がひとつとなるのを見ます。

Their situation was different than ours, their culture was different than ours, their lifestyle was different than ours.  But their family problems, their personal relationships, their sorrows and their joys are just like ours.  

彼らの状況は私たちとは異なっていました。彼らの文化やライフスタイルは私たちとは異なっていました。しかし、彼らの家族の問題、彼らの人間関係、彼らの悲しみ、そして彼らの喜びは私たちと同じものです。

We are also taught about the spiritual blessings that came to those people.  Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were great Priesthood leaders who taught their families about the gospel.  Throughout the scriptures, we find the phrase, “the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”.

また、彼らにもたらされた霊的な祝福についても教えています。アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブは、家族に福音を教えた偉大な神権指導者でした。聖書全体に、「アブラハムの神、イサクの神、ヤコブの神」という言葉があります。

Jacob is often referred to by the name “Israel”, as in “the twelve tribes of Israel”.  The twelve tribes were the twelve sons of Jacob.  Even today, as we receive a Patriarchal blessing, we are given blessings through one of those twelve tribes of Israel.

ヤコブは、「イスラエルの十二支族」のように、しばしば「イスラエル」という名前で呼ばれます。十二支族はヤコブの十二人の息子たちでした。今日でも、私たちは祝福師の祝福を受けており、イスラエルのひとつの支族を通して祝福が与えられています。

Why is Jacob sometimes called Israel?  

なぜヤコブは時折、イスラエルと呼ばれるのでしょうか？

In this scripture, Jacob “wrestled with a man” all night long.  This is similar to the experience of Enos in the Book of Mormon, when Enos prays all day and all night for blessings.  At the close of Jacob’s struggle, he asks for a blessing.  The Lord blesses Jacob and tells Jacob his name will now be Israel, because of his faith and because he has prevailed.  

この聖句では、ヤコブは一晩中「ひとりの人と組打」したと書かれています。これはモルモン書のエノスが昼も夜も熱烈に祝福を祈った経験に似ています。ヤコブは組打ちが終わると、祝福を求めています。主はヤコブを祝福し、彼の信仰と彼が勝ったために、彼の名前はもはやイスラエルになるとヤコブに告げられました。

President Russell M. Nelson has taught us that the name Israel means “Let God Prevail”.  As children of Israel, we need to “let God prevail” in our lives.  We need to have Christ as the center of our lives.

As we follow the Savior, we are letting God prevail.  As we keep the commandments, we are letting God prevail.  As we receive the ordinances of salvation, we are letting God prevail.  As we walk the covenant path, we are letting God prevail.

私たちが救い主に従うとき、神に勝利を得ていただくことになるのです。私たちが戒めを守るとき、私たちは神に勝利を得ていただいています。私たちが救いの儀式を受けるとき、私たちは神に勝利を得ていただいています。私たちが契約の道を歩むとき、私たちは神に勝利を得ていただいています。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember that we, too, are children of Israel.  Let’s remember the examples of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.  Let’s remember the examples of Sarah, Rebecca, and Rachel.  Let’s do our best to follow them.  Let’s let God prevail in our own lives, this day and every day.

私たちもイスラエルの子供であることを忘れないようにして新しい週を過ごしましょう。アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの模範を、そしてサラ、リベカ、ラケルの模範を思い起こしましょう。彼らに従うよう最善を尽くしましょう。毎日の生活の中で、神に勝利を得ていただくようにしましょう。
