My soul hath been redeemed from the gall of bitterness and the bonds of iniquity. I was in the darkest abyss; but now I behold the marvelous light of God. My soul was racked with eternal torment; but I am snatched, and my soul is pained no more. Mosiah 27:29
息子アルマのメッセージと模範は、私たちにとって有益なものです。アルマの父親は偉大な預言者であり神権指導者でした。彼は非常に困難な時代の中、民を導きました。彼らは邪悪な王ノアから逃れ、新たな住み場所を見つけました。残念なことに、レーマン人は再び彼らを捕えてしまいました。彼らが脱出してゼラヘムラに戻ることができたのは、主の祝福と助けによるものでした。
The message and example of Alma the younger can be instructive to all of us. Alma’s father was a great prophet and priesthood leader. He had led his people through very difficult times. They had escaped from wicked king Noah and had found a new place to live. Unfortunately, the Lamanites had taken them captive again. It was only through the blessings and help of the Lord that they were able to escape and return to Zarahemla.
にもかかわらず、アルマと名付けられた彼の息子は、教会の忠実な会員ではありませんでした。実際、彼とその友人の何人かは、教会を滅ぼそうと全力を尽くしました。聖典には、彼は「非常に邪悪で、偶像礼拝をする者」だったと書かれています。このことは、彼の父親に多大な苦痛と心痛を与えました。
In spite of all this, his son, who was also named Alma, was not a faithful member of the Church. In fact, he and some of his friends tried their best to destroy the Church. The scriptures say that he was a “very wicked and an idolatrous man”. This caused a lot of pain and heartache for his father.
父親の熱心な祈りと断食の結果、アルマは天使の訪れを受けました。天使はアルマを叱責し、教会への迫害をやめるよう言いました。天使はアルマに、天使の指示に従わなければ追い出されると告げました。アルマはこれに驚き、歩くことも話すことも、動くことさえできないほど弱ってしまいました。彼は父親のもとに連れて行かれましたが、父親はこれが息子にとって大きな祝福であることを理解していました。
As a result of much prayer and fasting by his father, Alma was visited by an angel. The angel rebuked Alma and told him to stop persecuting the Church. The angel told Alma that he would be cast off if he did not obey the instructions of the angel. Alma was so astonished by this that he became so weak he could not walk, or talk, or even move. He was taken to his father, who understood that this was a great blessing for his son.
数日後、息子アルマは元気を取り戻し、人々に自分の身に起こったことを話しました。 彼はようやく幸福の計画を理解し、罪を悔い改めたと言いました。彼は聞いている人たちに力強い説教をすることができました。それ以来、彼は熱心に主に仕え、教会の偉大な宣教師の一人となりました。
After several days, Alma regained his strength and told the people what had happened to him. He said that he now understood the Plan of Happiness and he had repented of his sins. He was able to preach a powerful sermon to those who heard him. From that time on, he served the Lord diligently and became one of the great missionaries of the Church.
ここにはふたつの重要なメッセージがあります。まず第一に、私たちは誰に対しても決して諦めてはいけないことが教えられています。私たちの義務は、たとえ彼らが福音についてすべてを拒否しているように見えても、神の息子や娘たち全員に仕え続けることです。人を不信仰な者からイエス・キリストに従う者へと変えるような出来事が、いつ起こるかわかりません。決して諦めてはいけません。
There are two important messages here. First of all, we are taught never to give up on anyone. Our duty is to continue to minister to all of God’s sons and daughters, even if they seem to reject everything about the gospel. We never know when something will happen that will change a person from being a disbeliever into a follower of Jesus Christ. We should never give up.
第二に、イエス・キリストの贖いによって救われないほどの罪を犯した者はいないことが教えられています。時々、自分があまりにも多くの罪を犯してしまったので、救い主が私たちを愛してくださるのは不可能だと感じることがあります。私たちは自分自身の欠点をすべて見て、自分が弱くて罪深い者であると感じます。自分以上の罪を犯した者は他にいないと考えてしまいます。
Secondly, we are taught that no one has sinned so much that the Atonement of Jesus Christ cannot help them. Sometimes we feel that we have committed so many sins that it would be impossible for the Savior to love us. We see all of our own failings and feel that we are a weak and terrible person. We think that no one else has ever sinned as much as we have.
それでも、アルマのこの経験は私たちに希望を与えてくれます。間違いなく私たちは皆、罪を犯しています。私たちは皆、間違いを犯したことがあります。しかし、だからと言って自分自身を「罪人の中で最も罪深い者」だと考えますか？アルマとその友人たちはそのように描写されています(モーサヤ28:4)。 私たちは皆、罪を犯していますが、最も罪深い者ではありません。アルマの経験は、最も罪深い者でも悔い改めて清くなり、聖約の道に戻ることができることを教えています。
And yet, this experience of Alma can give us all hope. Yes, we have all committed sins. We have all made mistakes. But do you consider yourself to be “the very vilest of sinners”? That is how Alma and his friends were described (Mosiah 28:4). While we have all committed sins, none of us are the very vilest of sinners. Alma’s experience teaches us that even the very vilest of sinners can repent, can become clean, can return to the covenant path.
新しい週が始まります。どうか自分の人生を評価してみてください。私たちは最も罪深い者ではないことを覚えていましょう。イエス・キリストの贖罪によって再び清くなれないほど罪を犯した者はいないことを覚えていましょう。アルマの模範を思い出してみましょう。アルマは実際には非常に罪深い者でしたが、悔い改めて力ある宣教師になりました。彼が悔い改めて清くなることができれば、私たちも悔い改めて清くなることができます。
As we go through this next week, let’s evaluate our life. Let’s remember that we are not the very vilest of sinners. Let’s remember that no one has sinned so much that the Atonement of Jesus Christ cannot help us become clean again. Let’s remember the example of Alma, who really was a very vile sinner, but who repented and became a powerful missionary. If he can repent and become clean, so can we.
