もし人がわたしのもとに来るならば、わたしは彼らに各々の弱さを示そう。わたしは人を謙遜にするために、人に弱さを与える。わたしの前にへりくだるすべての者に対して、わたしの恵みは十分である。もし彼らがわたしの前にへりくだり、わたしを信じるならば、そのとき、わたしはかれらの弱さを強さに変えよう。エテル１２：２７

And if men will come unto me I will show unto them their weakness.  I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make the weak things become strong unto them.  Ether 12:27

一般的に謙遜であることは、大切な特質とは考えられていません。むしろ謙遜であることは弱さと同じだと考えられています。人々は強くなり、権力を持ちたいと考えています。彼らは自分の考えやアイデアに従いたい、何をすべきか他人から指図されたくない、と考えています。

Being humble is not a character trait the world thinks is important.  The world thinks being humble is the same as being weak.  The world wants to be strong and to be powerful. They want to follow their own thoughts and ideas.  They don’t want anyone to tell them what to do.

これとは対照的に、イエス・キリストの福音では、謙遜であることは、私たち全員が身につけるべき特質です。聖典には、偉大な力を与えられながらも謙遜であった偉大な預言者の例が数多くあります。ヒラマン書3章35節には、教会員が断食と祈りを頻繁に行い、謙遜さが増したと書かれています。ベニヤミン王は、生まれながらの人はへりくだらない限り、神の敵であると教えました。

In contrast, in the gospel of Jesus Christ, being humble is a character trait we all try to develop.  We have many examples in the scriptures of great prophets who were humble in spite of having great power given to them.  In Helaman 3:35, we are told that the members of the Church fasted and prayed much, and became stronger in their humility.  King Benjamin taught us that the natural man is an enemy to God unless he becomes humble.

へりくだる（謙遜である）とはどういうことでしょうか。ベニヤミン王は謙遜な人を柔和で、愛に満ち、忍耐強い人と表現しています。ニーファイ第二書31章7節で、ニーファイは世の救い主であり贖い主であるイエス・キリストでさえ御父の前にへりくだられたことを思い起こさせています。イエス・キリストの模範に従うなら、私たちも謙遜にならなければなりません。

What does it mean to be humble?  King Benjamin describes those who are humble as being meek, full of love, and patient.  In 2 Nephi 31:7, Nephi reminds us that even Jesus Christ, the Savior and Redeemer of the world, humbled himself before the Father.  If we are to follow the example of Jesus Christ, we too must humble ourselves.

私たちは皆、克服すべき弱さを持っています。主は、私たちがへりくだることを学ぶために弱点が与えられていると言っています。自分の弱さを認めるとき、主は私たちがそれを克服できるように助けてくださいます。

We all have weaknesses to overcome.  The Lord says that we are given weaknesses to help us learn to be humble. As we acknowledge our weaknesses, the Lord will help us to overcome them.

私たちは皆、圧倒されるような様々な召しを受けています。求められていることはできない、その召しにふさわしい人間ではない、と考えるかもしれません。しかし、これは主が私たちを成長させ、弱さの一つを克服するために与えてくださった機会なのです。私たちが熱心に奉仕するなら、主は私たちの能力を増し加え、よく奉仕できるよう助けてくださいます。

We have all been given various callings that seem overwhelming to us.  We think that we cannot do the things that we are asked to do.  We don’t think we are good enough for that particular calling.  However, this is an opportunity given to us by the Lord to help us grow and overcome one of our weaknesses.  As we diligently serve, the Lord will bless us with increased capacity and will help us to serve well.

聖餐会で話をしたり、扶助協会や神権会でクラスを教えたりするよう頼まれることもあるでしょう。私たちは、だれかの役に立つようなことは絶対に言えない、あるいは新しいことは何も教えられないと思うかもしれません。しかし、それは問題ではありません。重要なのは、これが弱さを克服するためのもう一つの機会だということです。聖餐会でこれまで語られた話の中で最も素晴らしい話ではないかもしれませんが、最善を尽くすなら、それは私たちの人生にとって大きな祝福となるはずです。

Perhaps we are asked to give a talk in Sacrament meeting, or to teach a class in Relief Society or Priesthood meeting.  We think we cannot possibly say anything that will be helpful to anyone or that we cannot teach anything new.  But that is not the point.  The point is that this is another opportunity for us to work on overcoming a weakness.  It may not be the greatest Sacrament meeting talk that was ever given, but if we do our best, it will turn out to be a great blessing in our own lives.

私たちが自分の弱さと戦うとき、それを克服する力が与えられます。主は、私たちが最善を尽くすなら、弱さを克服するために必要な祝福を受けると約束しておられます。私たちの使命は、弱さにもかかわらず信仰をもって前進し、救い主イエス・キリストに従うために最善を尽くすことです。

As we struggle with our weaknesses, we will be given strength to overcome them.  The Lord has promised that, if we do our best, we will receive the blessings that we need to overcome our weaknesses.  Our assignment is to go forward with faith, in spite of our weaknesses, and do our best to follow our Savior Jesus Christ.  

新しい週が始まります。自分の弱さについて少し時間を取って考えてみましょう。その弱さを改善し克服する方法に焦点を当ててみましょう。へりくだることを学ぶために、弱さが与えられていることを忘れないようにしましょう。イエス・キリストはどんな弱さも克服できるように助けてくださることを忘れず、イエス・キリストへの信仰をもって進んで進みましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s take some time to think about our own weaknesses.  Let’s focus on how we can improve and overcome those weaknesses.  Let’s remember that we are given those weaknesses so that we may learn to be humble.  Let’s be willing to go forward with faith in Jesus Christ, knowing that he can help us overcome any weakness.
