そこでエステルは命じてモルデカイに答えさせた、「あなたは行ってスサにいるすべてのユダヤ人を集め、わたしのために断食してください。三日のあいだ夜も昼も食い飲みしてはなりません。わたしとわたしの侍女たちも同様に断食しましょう。そしてわたしは法律にそむくことですが王のもとへ行きます。そしてわたしがもし死なねばならないのなら、死にます」。エステル記４:１５−１６

Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer, Go gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat or drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so I will go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.  Esther 4:15-16

The book of Esther tells the story of one of the great events in this history of the Jewish people, one which is remembered even to this day.  The Jewish holiday called “Purim” is a celebration and a remembrance of the events recorded in the book of Esther.

エステル記には、ユダヤ人の歴史の中で、今日でも記憶に残る偉大な出来事が載っています。「プリム（くじ）」と呼ばれるユダヤ教の祝日は、エステル記に記録されているお祝いであり記念日です。

At the time of Esther, the Persian kingdom stretched from India to Africa.  It was a very powerful kingdom.  As the story opens, the king tells the queen to come in to a feast that the king had prepared for all his princes and the other important men of the kingdom.  The queen refused to obey the king.  

エステルの時代、ペルシャ王国はインドからアフリカに広がっていました。とても強大な王国でした。物語の初めでは、すべての王子や王国の重要な人々のために準備した宴会に来るよう王が女王に言っています。女王は王に従うことを拒みました。

As a result, the king rejected her as the queen and chose a new queen.  A Jewish woman named Esther was chosen as the new queen.  Esther did not tell anyone that she was Jewish, though.

その結果、王は彼女を女王として拒み、新しい女王を選びました。エステルという名前のユダヤ人の女性が新しい女王として選ばれました。しかし、エステルは自分がユダヤ人だとは誰にも言いませんでした。

One of the king’s advisors, a man named Haman, hated the Jews. He told the king that the Jews were disobedient to the laws of the king and should all be killed.  He said he would pay the king a very large sum of money if the king would sign a decree, saying that all the Jews in the entire kingdom should be killed on a certain day.  The king liked Haman and agreed.

王の宰相の一人であるハマンという男は、ユダヤ人を憎んでいました。ユダヤ人は王の法律に従わず、すべて殺されるべきであると彼は王に言いました。王が法令に署名するならば、王に非常に多額のお金を払うと彼は言いました。そして、王国全体のすべてのユダヤ人は特定の日に殺されるべきであると言いました。王はハマンを気に入っていたので同意しました。

Mordecai, the uncle of Esther, who had raised her after her parents were killed, heard about the decree and sent a message to Esther, asking her to go to the king and have him rescind the decree.  The problem was, that no one was allowed to go in to see the king unless they have been invited.  Anyone who went into the king’s court without being invited would be killed, unless the king agreed to let them come in.

エステルの両親が殺された後に彼女を育てた叔父のモルデカイは、その命令を聞いてエステルにメッセージを送り、王に行って彼に命令を取り消すように頼みました。しかし問題がありました。招待されない限り、誰も王に会うことを許されなかったということです。王が同意しない限り、招待されずに王の宮廷に入った人は誰でも殺されるのです。

So Esther faced a choice.  She could do nothing and be safe, but all of the Jews would be killed.  Or, she could risk her life by going in to see the king without being invited and try to save her people.

それで、エステルは決断に迫られました。何もしなければ彼女の身は安全でしたが、ユダヤ人が皆、殺されることになります。または、招待されることなく王に会いに行き、人々を救おうとすれば彼女自身の命を危険にさらす可能性があります。

Esther courageously chose to defend her people.  She asked everyone to fast for her.  She went in to see the king and luckily, the king agreed to let her come in.  She asked the king to reverse the decree.  He agreed and the Jewish people in the entire kingdom of Persia were saved.

エステルは勇気を持って自分の民を守ることを選びました。すべての人に彼女のために断食するように頼みました。そして彼女は王に会いに行きました。幸いなことに、王は彼女が入ることに同意し、彼女は王に命令を覆すように頼みました。王は同意し、ペルシャ王国全体のユダヤ人が救われました。

We often face choices in our own lives.  It is unlikely that any of our choices put us at risk of being killed, though.  Our choices may put us at risk of embarrassment.  We may be laughed at for our choices.  We may be excluded from social groups.  We may be taunted for our beliefs.

私たちは自分の生活の中でしばしば決断に迫られます。しかし、選択によって自分が殺される危険にさらされる可能性は先ず無いでしょう。選択によっては恥ずかしい思いをするかもしれません。笑われたり、社会でのけ者にされるかもしれません。自分の信仰のために罵倒されるかもしれません。

When we face choices of standing up for our beliefs, we need to remember the example of Esther.  She was an instrument in the hand of the Lord in saving her people.  

私たちが自分の信仰のために立ち上がるという選択に直面するとき、私たちはエステルの模範を思い出す必要があります。彼女は人々を救うための主の御手に使われる者でした。

We may be able to be an instrument in the hands of the Lord by introducing someone to the gospel.  We may be able to be instruments in the hands of the Lord by sharing our personal beliefs.  We may be able to be an instrument in the hands of the Lord by opposing racism or unkind actions.  We may be able to be instruments in the hands of the Lord by standing firm for our beliefs in the face of social pressure.

誰かに福音を紹介することで、私たちは主の御手に使われる者となれるかもしれません。自分の信仰を分かち合うことによって、私たちは主の御手に使われる者となれるかもしれません。人種差別や不親切な行動に反対することで、私たちは主の御手に使われる者になれるかもしれません。社会的圧力に対し自分の信仰を堅持することによって、私たちは主の御手に使われる者となれるかもしれません。

As we go through this next week, let’s look for opportunities to be an instrument in the hands of the Lord.  Let’s remember the courage and faith of Esther.  Let’s be willing to share our beliefs with others.  Let’s be willing to be friends with all people.  Let’s be good examples of a true follower of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
