まことに、主はこのように言う。自分の罪を捨て、わたしのもとに来て、わたしの名を呼び、わたしの声に従い、わたしの戒めを守る者は皆、わたしの顔を見て、わたしがいることを知るであろう。教義と聖約９３：１

Verily, thus saith the Lord: It shall come to pass that every soul who forsaketh his sins and cometh unto me, and calleth upon my name, and obeyeth my voice, and keepeth my commandments, shall see my face and know that I am; Doctrine & Covenants 93:1

1833年にカートランドで預言者ジョセフ・スミスは、教義と聖約93章の啓示を受けました。その最初の節で、主は重要な教義を明らかにされています。

In Kirtland, in 1833, the prophet Joseph Smith received the revelation contained in Section 93 of the Doctrine and Covenants.  In the very first verse, the Lord reveals important doctrine.

この短い節には、いくつかの興味深い点があります。

There are several interesting points in this short verse.  

まず、この節は「福音の祝福はすべての人に開かれている」という重要な原則を再確認させてくれます。悔い改め、祝福を受けることを禁じられている人はいません。誰かと比べて価値が低い人などいませんし、言語・文化・人種・国籍によって祝福が制限されることもありません。

First of all, this verse re-confirms the important principle that the blessings of the gospel are available to everyone.  No one is prohibited from repenting and receiving blessings.  No one is less important than anyone else.  No one is limited to only a few blessings because of their language, or their culture, or their race, or their nationality.

天の御父はすべての子供たちを等しく愛しておられ、みなが再びともに住まえるように帰ってくることを望んでおられます。そのために、真理の教義を教えるべく、預言者と使徒を通して私たちに語りかけておられるのです。

Heavenly Father loves all of his children equally and wants all of them to return to live with him.  Because of this, he speaks through his chosen prophets and apostles to teach us true doctrine.

この節は、私たちが行うべきことを四つ示しています。

In this verse, we are taught the things that we need to do.

第一に、罪を捨てること。これは、心から悔い改め、すべての罪から離れることを意味します。

One, we need to forsake our sins.  This means to truly repent of all our sins.

第二に、救い主の御名を呼び求めること。

つまり祈ることです。私たちは家庭で、教会の集会で、また導きや助けが必要なときにはいつでも祈ることができます。祈りは声に出しても、心の中でも、個人でも、家族と共にもささげることができます。

Two, we are commanded to call upon the name of the Savior.  This means to pray.  We pray in our homes, in our Church meetings, and any other time that we need divine direction or help.  We can pray vocally or in our hearts.  We can pray by ourselves or with family members. 

第三に、主の声に従うこと。

これは、祈り求めたときに来る御霊の促しに従うこと、そして預言者や使徒の教えに従うことを意味します。たとえば「わたしに従ってきなさい」の学びを通して自分の証を強めたり、召しについて啓示を受けるビショップの助言に従うことです。

Three, we are told to obey his voice.  This means several things.  It means that we are to follow the promptings of the Spirit that come as we pray for answers.  It means that we are to obey the things the prophets and apostles teach us.  For example, we are to use the “Come, Follow Me” program to strengthen our own testimonies.  It also means that we are to follow the counsel of our bishop, as he receives revelation about which calling we should serve in.

第四に、戒めを守ること。

一部だけではなく、すべての戒めを守るよう努めます。誰もが過ちを犯しますが、そのたびに悔い改め、改善するよう努力することが求められます。

Four, we are to keep the commandments.  Not just some of them.  We are to keep all of them.  When we make mistakes, as we all do, we need to repent and do our best to improve.  

では、これらを行う人への約束は何でしょうか。

What is the promised blessing for those who do these things?

それは「主の顔を見て、主が生きておられることを知る」という祝福です。

We are promised that we will see his face and know that he is.

多くの預言者は実際に主と顔を合わせ、その記録が聖典に残されています。しかし、私たちがこの世で同じ体験をすることはおそらくないでしょう。

There have been many prophets who have seen the Lord face to face.  We have many records of that in the scriptures.  However, it is unlikely that any one of us will have that type of experience in this life.  

むしろ、私たちは次のような形で「主の顔を見て、主を知る」のです。

  • 聖霊が福音の真実を証するときに感じる、心温まる平安を通して
  • 神殿で奉仕するときに
  • 与えられた召しに熱心に仕えるときに
  • 重荷や試練を負う人々を助けるときに

Rather, we see his face and know that he is by that warm feeling we receive when the Holy Ghost testifies to us of the truthfulness of the gospel.  We see his face and know that he is as we serve in the temple.  We see his face and know that he is as we serve diligently in our own callings.  We see his face and know that he is as we serve those around us who have burdens or trials.

これらの経験を通して、聖霊は天の御父が生きておられること、イエス・キリストが私たちの救い主であること、そして福音が真実であることを証してくださいます。こうして私たちは、主の顔を見て、主が生きておられることを知るのです。

As we do these things, the Holy Ghost testifies to us that Heavenly Father lives, that Jesus Christ is our Savior, and that the gospel is true.  In this way we can see his face and know that he is.

新しい週が始まります。主が示された四つの大切な教え――悔い改めること、祈ること、主の声に従うこと、戒めを守ること――を心に留めましょう。そして、主の顔を見て、主が生きておられることを知るにふさわしい者となれるよう、最善を尽くしましょう。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember these four important instructions from the Lord.  Let’s remember to do our best to repent, to pray, to obey his voice, and to keep the commandments.  Let’s do our best to be worthy to see his face and know that he is.
