生まれながらの人は神の敵であり、アダムの堕落以来そうであって、今後もそうである。また人は、聖なる御霊の勧めに従い、主なるキリストの贖罪により、生まれながらの人を捨てて聖徒となり、子供のように従順で、柔和で、謙遜で、忍耐強く、愛にあふれた者となり、子供が父に従うように、主がその人に負わせるのがふさわしとされるすべてのことに喜んで従わないかぎり、とこしえにいつまでも神の敵となるであろう。モーザヤ書３：１９

For the natural man is an enemy to God, and has been from the fall of Adam, and will be forever and ever, unless he yields to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, and putteth off the natural man and becometh a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord, and becometh as a child, submissive, meek, humble, patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which the Lord seeth fit to inflict upon him, even as a child doth submit to his father.  Mosiah 3:19

何世紀にもわたって、哲学者や宗教学者は、人間は基本的に善なのか、それとも悪なのかについて議論してきました。さまざまな宗教団体で、「肉体的な人間」を幸福にするものはすべて悪いものに違いないという考えが広まりました。それらの宗教団体は、楽しいこと、人を幸せにすることを禁止するさまざまなルールが作られました。その考えは、人々を肉体的に苦しめることで、より霊的になれるというものでした。

For centuries, philosophers and religious scholars have argued about whether man is basically good or basically bad.  In different religious organizations, the idea became popular that anything which made the “physical man” happy, must be bad.  Many different rules were created by these religious organizations to ban anything that was fun, or made people happy.  The idea was that by making people suffer physically, they would be able to become more spiritual.

ベニヤミン王は偉大な説教の中で、人間は基本的に善か悪かという質問に対する答えを明確に説明しました。その答えは、人間は最初から善でも悪でもない、というものでした。私たちは自分の選択と行動によって善にも悪にもなるのです。

In his great sermon, king Benjamin clearly explained the answer to the question about whether man was basically good or bad.  The answer he gave was that man is neither good nor bad in the beginning.  We become good or bad by the choices we make and the actions we take.

「生まれながらの人」、つまり肉体的な人とは、イエス・キリストの福音に従わないという選択をする人のことです。サタンは、肉の快楽を使えば生まれながらの人を誘惑するのが簡単であると理解していました。生まれながらの人とは、プライドが高くて祈ることができず、戒めを守ることができず、聖霊の促しに耳を傾けることができない人のことです。

The “natural man”, or in other words, the physical man, is anyone who makes a choice to not follow the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Satan finds it easy to tempt the natural man with the pleasures of the flesh.  The natural man is anyone who is too proud to pray, too proud to keep the commandments, too proud to listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost.

ベニヤミン王は、小さな、簡単な行動によって生まれながらの人を「脱ぎ捨てる」ことができると教えています。生まれながらの人を脱ぎ捨てれば、私たちは救い主イエス・キリストにもっと似た者になれるのです。

King Benjamin teaches us that we can “put off” the natural man by a few simple and easy actions.  By putting off the natural man, we can become more like our Savior Jesus Christ.  

私たちはもっと子供の様にならなければならないと教えられています。それは、私たちが責任を引き受けることを拒んだり、他の人が自分の世話をしてくれることを期待するという意味ではありません。それは教えを受けることを厭わないということを意味します。それは変化し、成長する意欲があることを意味します。 それは、主の時を忍耐強く待ち望むことを意味します。

We are taught that we need to become more childlike.  That does not mean that we refuse to accept responsibility or that we expect others to take care of us.  It means that we are willing to be taught.  It means that we are willing to change and to grow.  It means that we are willing wait patiently for the due time of the Lord.

ベンジャミン王は、私たちが生まれながらの人を克服しようとするとき、身につけるべき特質を数多く挙げています。彼は主の御心に従順であること、柔和であること、謙虚であること、忍耐強いこと、愛に満ちていることなどを挙げています。

King Benjamin lists many of the character attributes that we need to develop as we seek to overcome the natural man.  He cites such things as being submissive to the will of the Lord, being meek, being humble, being patient, and being full of love.

私たちがそれらの特質を伸ばそうと努めるとき、聖霊は私たちの歩みを導いてくださいます。1 日で完璧になることは期待できません。とても時間がかかります。日々の努力が必要です。日々の悔い改めが必要です。

As we try to develop those attributes, the Holy Ghost will lead and guide us along our journey.  No one is expected to become perfect in those things in just one day.  It takes time, lots of time.  It takes daily effort.  It takes daily repentance.  

聖霊の促しに従うことは、聖約の道をしっかりと歩むのに役立ちます。それは私たちがこの世の試練や困難に耐えるのに役立ちます。それは私たちが福音の小さな、簡単なことの中に喜びを見出すのを助けます。

Yielding to the enticings of the Holy Ghost helps us stay firmly on the covenant path.  It helps us endure the trials and struggles of this life.  It helps us find joy in the small and simple things of the gospel.

新しい週が始まります。ベニヤミン王が私たちに教えてくれたことを心に留めながら過ごしましょう。キリストのような特質を伸ばすために、どのようなことをしているか評価してみましょう。改善し成長する方法を探してみましょう。天の家に戻る旅路は苦しいかもしれませんが、常に聖霊の導きを求めて歩みましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s spend time thinking about what king Benjamin has taught us.  Let’s evaluate how we are doing in developing those Christ-like attributes.  Let’s look for ways to improve and grow.  Let’s always seek the guidance of the Holy Ghost as we struggle through our journey back to our Heavenly home.
