And when the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses.  And he said, Here am I.  And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off the shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.  Moreover, he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.  And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.  Exodus 3:4-6

The book of Exodus opens with the account of Moses, his birth, his life, and his calling as a prophet.  This is one of the most famous stories in the Bible.  It teaches us that the Lord calls prophets to lead his people in every generation.

出エジプト記は、モーセの誕生、生涯、そして預言者としての召しについての記述で始まります。これは聖書の中で最も有名な物語の一つです。主がすべての世代で主の民を導くために預言者を召されていることを私たちに教えています。

In the first part of the book of Exodus, we see that the descendants of Jacob and his family who had moved down to Egypt during the great famine had now grown into a large population.  The king of Egypt was worried that they might join his enemies.  He decided to lay heavy burdens on the people, to make them work hard.  He also commanded that only baby girls should live.  If a baby boy was born, it was to be killed.  However, the Hebrew midwives defied the king and did not kill the baby boys.

出エジプト記の初めの方で、ヤコブの子孫と大飢饉の時にエジプトに移った家族がかなり増えたことがわかります。エジプトの王は、彼らが敵に加わるのではないかと心配していました。王は人々に重荷を負わせ重労働させることに決めました。また、女の赤ちゃんだけが生き残るよう命じました。男の子が生まれたら、殺すことになっていました。しかし、ヘブライ人の助産師は王に逆らい、男の赤ちゃんを殺しませんでした。

When Moses was born, his mother kept him for 3 months.  After that, she put him in a tiny boat and put him in the river.  His older sister was there to watch over him.  A daughter of Pharaoh found him and took him to her house.  Moses grew up as a member of the royal family.

モーセが生まれ、母親は彼を3か月だけ育てました。その後、彼を小さな船に乗せ、川に隠しました。彼の姉は彼をそこで見守っていました。パロの娘が彼を見つけ、彼女の家に連れて行きました。モーセは王室の一員として育ちました。

As an adult, Moses killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave.  Because of that, he had to flee into the desert.  He met the family of a man named Jethro and lived with that family for many years.

モーセが大人になった時、ヘブライ人の奴隷を殴っていたエジプト人を殺してしまいました。そのため、モーセは砂漠に逃げなければなりませんでした。彼はエテロという名の人と出会い、その家族と何年も一緒に暮らしました。

One day, while he was watching over the flocks of sheep, he saw a bush that was on fire but the bush was not burned up.  He thought this was strange, so he went to see it.  As he approached the burning bush, the Lord spoke to him and called Moses to be the prophet for that generation of people.  

ある日、羊の群れの番をしていたとき、燃えるしばを見ましたが、しばは燃えていませんでした。彼はおかしいと思ったので、それを見に行きました。燃えるしばに近づくと、主がモーセに話しかけ、その世代の人々の預言者になるように召されました。

As we think back over the history of this world, we find many examples of how the Lord has called prophets.  Moses was called by seeing a burning bush in the desert.  The brother of Jared was called by seeing the finger of the Lord.  Paul was called by seeing a vision on the road to Damascus.  Alma was called by the visitation of an angel.  Joseph Smith was called by the appearance of the Father and the Son in answer to Joseph’s prayer.

歴史を振り返ると、主が色んな方法で預言者を召された例がたくさんあります。モーセは砂漠で燃えるしばを見ることで召されました。ヤレドの兄弟は主の指を見ることで召されました。パウロはダマスカスへの道で啓示で見ることで召されました。アルマは天使の訪れによって召されました。ジョセフ・スミスは、天父と御子が祈りに応えられたことで召されました。

In every generation, the Lord calls prophets to guide his people. This has been the pattern since the days of Adam.  The Lord loves everyone and wants everyone to be happy.  The only way to really be happy is to keep the commandments.  The only way to keep the commandments is to first be taught what the commandments are.  The only way to be taught what the commandments are is to have a prophet who can receive revelation from the Lord.

すべての世代において、主は民を導くために預言者を召されます。これはアダムの時代からの規範です。主はすべての人を愛し、すべての人が幸せになることを望んでおられます。本当に幸せになる唯一の方法は、戒めを守ることです。戒めを守る唯一の方法は、最初に戒めが何であるかを知ることです。戒めが何であるかを知る唯一の方法は、主から啓示を受けることができる預言者を持つことです。

Just like the Hebrews in the days of Moses, we have a living prophet to guide us and to teach us.  President Russell M. Nelson has the same calling and assignment as did Moses, the brother of Jared, Paul, Alma, and Joseph Smith.  He is the prophet for our day.  If we follow his counsel and teachings, we will be happy in this life and in the life to come.

モーセの時代のヘブライ人のように、私たちには生ける預言者がおり、私たちを導き、教えてくれます。ラッセル・M・ネルソン大管長は、モーセやヤレドの兄弟、パウロ、アルマ、ジョセフ・スミスと同じ召しと任務を担っています。彼は私たちの時代の預言者です。私たちが彼の勧告と教えに従うならば、私たちは現在と未来において幸せになるでしょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember how much the Lord loves each one of us.  Let’s remember that the Lord calls prophets in every generation.  Let’s remember that we have a living prophet today to guide us.  Let’s do all that we can do to follow the counsel given by all the prophets of the past, but most importantly, to follow the counsel given to us by our current prophet.

新しい週が始まります。主が私たち一人一人をどれほど愛しておられるかを心に留めて過ごしましょう。主はすべての世代で預言者を召されることを忘れないでください。今日、私たちを導くために生ける預言者がいることを忘れないでください。昔の預言者によって与えられた勧告に従うためにできるすべてのことをしましょう。しかし最も重要なことは、現在の預言者によって与えられた勧告に従うということです。
