And the angel of the Lord called unto Abraham out of heaven a second time, and said, By myself I have sworn, saith the Lord, for because thou hast done this thing, and has not withheld thy son, thine only son, that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;  Genesis 22:15-18

The Old Testament is full of interesting stories about people.  One of the most interesting things we learn is that they were just like us.  Their circumstances were different, but they had many of the same challenges that we face.

旧約聖書には、人々について興味深い話が多く語られています。最も興味深いのは、彼らは私たちと同じであったということです。彼らの状況は異なっていますが、その多くは私たちが直面する課題と類似しています。

We learn of rivalry between brothers, jealousy between sisters, discord between husbands and wives, joy over faithful children, and sorrow because of wayward children.  We learn about hard work, about disappointments, about failure.  We learn that suffering can brings blessings, that sometimes a terrible punishment turns out to be beneficial.

私たちは兄弟間の対立、姉妹間の嫉妬、夫婦の間の不和、忠実な子供たちに対する喜び、そしてわがままな子供たちのために悲しみを経験します。私たちは勤勉、失望、失敗について経験します。苦しみが祝福をもたらすことや、時には重い罰が益となることを経験します。

In this week’s reading assignment, we learn more about the prophet Abraham, his family, his trials, and his great blessings for obedience.

今週の読書課題では、預言者アブラハム、彼の家族、彼の試練、そして従順からもたらされる大いなる祝福について詳しく学びます。

Abraham was promised that his posterity would be as numerous as the stars in the heavens or the sands on the sea shore.  Yet, until very late in his life, he did not have a son.  He did not lose faith or start to doubt what the Lord had promised him.   He kept the commandments and waited on the Lord’s time for the fulfillment of that promise.

アブラハムは、彼の子孫が天の星や浜辺の砂ほど多くなると約束を受けました。それでも、彼は人生の非常に遅い時期まで、息子を授かりませんでした。彼は信仰を失ったり、主が約束されたことを疑ったりしませんでした。彼は戒めを守り、その約束が果たされる主の時を待ちました。

Both Abraham and his wife were way past the age for bearing a child.  They were told by heavenly messengers, though, that they would have a son.  It was a great miracle that Isaac was born to them.  They had waited many, many years for that miracle.

アブラハムと彼の妻はどちらも、子供を産む年齢をはるかに超えていました。しかし、彼らは天の使者から息子を授かると言われました。イサクが生まれたのは大きな奇跡でした。彼らはその奇跡を長年待っていました。

As a test of Abraham’s faith, he was told to take his only son and offer him as a sacrifice.  This must have been an incredibly difficult commandment for Abraham.  Isaac was his only son, through whom Abraham’s promised future posterity would come.  How could he sacrifice his only son?  

彼はひとり息子を連れて行き、犠牲として捧げるように言われました。それはアブラハムにとって信仰の試しでした。これはアブラハムにとって信じられないほど難しい戒めだったに違いありません。イサクは彼のひとり息子であり、彼を通してアブラハムに約束された子孫が将来もたらされるはずでした。彼はひとり息子をどうして犠牲にできたのでしょうか？

And remember, Abraham himself was almost offered as a sacrifice himself by the priests of Pharaoh.  He escaped by a miracle from the Lord.  How could the Lord ask him to do to Isaac what the wicked priests of Pharaoh had almost done to him?

覚えていますか？アブラハム自身もパロの祭司たちによって犠牲として捧げられかけました。主によって奇跡が起こり彼は逃れました。パロの邪悪な祭司たちが彼に行ったことを、主はどうしてイサクに行うようにと彼に命じられたのでしょうか。

But, Abraham had great faith.  He knew that whatever the Lord commanded was the right thing to do.  He did not doubt or find excuses.  He was obedient to the commandment of the Lord.  He took Isaac, went up to the mountain, and got ready to sacrifice Isaac.  

しかし、アブラハムは大きな信仰を持っていました。彼は、主が命じられることは何でも正しいと知っていました。彼は疑いもせず、言い訳もしませんでした。彼は主の戒めに従順でした。彼はイサクを連れて山に登り、イサクを犠牲にする準備をしました。

We don’t know how old Isaac was at that time.  Some bible scholars think that Isaac was already a grown man, or at least in his late teenage years.  So Isaac too had great faith.  As soon as Abraham had shown that he would do whatever the Lord commanded him, an angel of the Lord appeared and stopped Abraham from killing his son.  

当時のイサクの年齢は分かっていません。聖書学者の中には、イサクはすでに成長した人、または少なくとも10代後半だと考える人もいます。ですから、イサクも大きな信仰を持っていたはずです。主が命じられたことを何でも行う信仰をアブラハムが示したその時、主の天使が現れ、息子を殺すことを止めさせました。

Because of the faith and obedience of Abraham (and Isaac, too), the Lord promised great and eternal blessing for Abraham.  He was told that through his posterity, all the nations of the earth would be blessed.

アブラハムの（そしてイサクの）信仰と従順のために、主はアブラハムに大いなる永遠の祝福を約束されました。 彼の子孫を通して、地上のすべての国民が祝福されると言われました。

As we go through this next week, let’s remember some of the things we learn from these Old Testament stories.  Let’s remember the blessings that came to the faithful.  Let’s remember the great faith of Abraham, who was obedient to the Lord even without understanding why he had been given that commandment.  Let’s follow his example.  We are his posterity.  It is though our actions, faith, and obedience that all the nations of the earth will be blessed.

新しい週が始まります。旧約聖書の物語から学んだことを思い起こしてみましょう。忠実な者にもたらされる祝福を忘れないでください。なぜその戒めが与えられたのか理解していなくても主に従順だったアブラハムの大いなる信仰を覚えて、彼の模範に従ってみましょう。私たちは彼の子孫です。地上のすべての国民が祝福されるのは、私たちの行動と信仰、そして従順によるのです。
