And if ye seek the riches which it is the will of the Father to give unto you, ye shall be the richest of all people, for ye shall have the riches of eternity; and it must needs be that the riches of the earth are mine to give; but beware of pride, lest ye become as the Nephites of old.

教義と聖約のこの章は、1831年1月にニューヨーク州のフェイエットで開かれた教会の大会で与えられました。それは今でいう「総大会」のようなもので、当時の教会全体に関わる重要な集まりだったからです。1831年であれ2021年であれ、教会の総大会は主の御心が預言者を通して示される場であることに変わりはありません。
This section of the Doctrine & Covenants was given in January 1831, at a conference of the Church at Fayette, in New York state. Today, we would probably call this a General Conference, since it really involved the whole Church. It reminds us that in a General Conference of the Church, whether in 1831 or in 2021, the will of the Lord is revealed to us through his appointed prophet.
この啓示の中で、主は当時の新しい教会に多くの指示を与えておられます。この時、教会は組織されてから約９ヶ月程しか経っていませんでした。教会がどのように機能するのか、総大会がどのように行われるべきなのか、また、イエス・キリスト教会の会員としてどんなことが求められるのか、誰もが手探りの状態でした。すべてが新しく、未知の世界だったのです。
In this revelation, the Lord gives a number of instructions to the new Church. Remember, at the time of this conference, the Church had been organized for only about nine months. No one knew how the Church should function, or how a General Conference should be conducted, or what was expected of members of the Church of Jesus Christ. It was all new to them.
この章では、主がとても重要な教義を教えておられます。それは「この世の富」ではなく、「永遠の富」に目を向けることの大切さです。
In this Section, the Lord teaches us an important doctrine. We are taught that we need to focus on the riches of eternity rather than on the riches of this world.
世の中の価値観とは少し違うかもしれません。多くの人が求める富といえば、高価な車や大きな家、ブランドの服やたくさんのお金といった、この世のものばかりです。
The world thinks this is crazy. The world wants to have riches, but the riches they want are all of this world. They want expensive cars, big houses, fancy clothes, lots of money. Those are the riches that the world seeks.
でも、この世の富には限りがあります。いつか私たちはこの世を去ります。そのとき、どんなに多くの財産を持っていても、次の世界へ持っていくことはできません。
The problem with these riches is that they are all only temporary. We know that when we die, and every living person on the earth will die someday, we can take none of those worldly riches with us into the next world.
ある金持ちの人の話があります。彼は亡くなる前に、自分の金塊をスーツケースいっぱいに詰めて、あの世へ持っていこうとしました。彼が天使たちにそれを見せると、天使たちは不思議そうに見つめた後、こう言いました。「どうして舗装用の敷石をこんなにたくさん持ってきたのですか？ここにはもう十分にありますよ。」
There is an old story about a rich man who was about to die. He told his servants to collect all his gold and put it into a suitcase. He died that night and took the suitcase full of gold with him into the next world. When he got there, he proudly showed the angels all his gold. The angels looked at the gold, then looked at the man, and then looked at the gold again. One of the angels finally asked him, “Why did you bring all these paving stones with you? We have plenty here.”
天の御父が子供たちに与えようと望んでおられる富は「舗装用の敷石」ではありません。戒めを守れば、「永遠の富」を受けることができるのです。それは、この世のどんな宝物よりも価値のあるものです。
The riches that Heavenly Father wants to give to his children are not “paving stones”. The “riches of eternity” can be ours if we keep the commandments. The riches of eternity are much more valuable than any treasure here on earth.
では「永遠の富」とはどのようなものでしょうか？家族と永遠にいられること、試練や困難の中でも平安を感じられること、バプテスマを受け、聖霊の賜物を授かること、聖餐をとれること、神殿で永遠の祝福を受けられること。これらが、本当の「永遠の富」なのです。
Some of the riches of eternity are the blessing to be with our own families forever, to have peace in this life in spite of trials and hardships, to be baptized and to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, to be able to take the sacrament, to be able to receive eternal blessings in the Temple.
これらは、私たちがこの世を去るときにも持っていくことができる、大切な宝物です。これこそが、本当の「永遠の富」なのです。
These are some of the greatest blessings that we can receive. These are blessings that we can take with us when we leave this life. These are blessings that are truly the riches of eternity.
世の中の人々が名声やお金を求める中で、決して失われることのない本当の富を求めましょう。
The world can lust after money, fame, and fortune. Let us focus on true riches, the riches that never end.
今週は、自分がどんな富に目を向けているか、少し振り返ってみませんか？私たちは、主が備えてくださる「永遠の富」を受ける準備ができているでしょうか？この素晴らしい祝福を受けられるように、できることを少しずつ続けていきましょう。
As we go through this week, let’s evaluate how we are doing in following this promise of the Lord. Let’s be sure we are focusing on the most important blessings. Let’s do all that we can do to qualify for the “riches of eternity”.
