にもかかわらず、主は御自分の民を懲らしめるのを、御心にかなうことと見ておられる。まことに、主は民の忍耐と信仰を試される。しかしながら、主に頼る者はだれであろうと、終わりの日に高く上げられる。モーサヤ書２３：２１－２２
Nevertheless, the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and faith. Nevertheless, whosever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day.
Mosiah 23:21-22
この死すべき現世を旅するとき、誰もが試練の時期、苦難の時期、困難な時期を経験します。それは計画の一部なのです。それらの試練や艱難や困難は、私たちを苦しめ落ち込ませることもあれば、成長して救い主イエス・キリストのようにさせることもあります。
As we travel on our journey through mortal life, we all have periods of trial, periods of hardship, periods of difficulty. That is just part of the plan. Those trials and hardships and difficulties can either make us bitter and depressed, or they can help us grow and become more like our Savior, Jesus Christ.
義にかなった生活を送り、すべての戒めを守っていても、この世で試練や困難に遭遇しないわけではありません。そうした困難な時期を経験することは、私たちが主に拒絶されたとか、罪のために罰せられたことを意味するものではありません。
Living a righteous life and keeping all the commandments does not prevent us from having trials and difficulties in this life. Experiencing those hard times does not mean we have been rejected by the Lord or that we are being punished for our sins.
私たちは、預言者ジョセフ・スミスが、救い主を除いて、これまで地上に生を受けた誰よりも人類の救いに貢献したと教えられています。それでも、ジョセフは最初の示現を受けたほぼその日から試練と迫害に苦しみました。イエス・キリストの福音を再び地上に伝えようと奮闘する中、家族や友人たちと楽しく過ごせる時間はほとんどありませんでした。
We are taught that the Prophet Joseph Smith did more for the salvation of mankind that any other person who has ever lived on the earth, except for our Savior. And yet, Joseph suffered trials and persecutions almost from the very day of the First Vision. As he struggled to bring the gospel of Jesus Christ to the earth again, he had very few times when he could enjoy being with his family and friends.
この聖句で、私たちはアルマの民の試練と苦難について学ぶことができます。アルマとその民はノア王の軍勢から逃れ、熱心に福音に従おうとしていました。彼らは戒めを守っていました。しかし、義にかなっていたにもかかわらず、レーマン人に捕らえられ、祈ることを禁じられました。彼らの義のゆえに、非常に困難な状況下であっても、主は彼らがレーマン人から逃れてニーファイ人に再び加わることができるようにしてくださいました。
In this scripture, we learn about the trials and hardships of the people of Alma. Alma and his people had escaped from king Noah’s army and were diligently trying to live the gospel. They were keeping the commandments. And yet, in spite of their righteousness, they were captured by the Lamanites and were forbidden to pray. Because of their righteousness, even under very difficult circumstances, the Lord made it possible for them to escape from the Lamanites and to rejoin the Nephites.
私たちも人生において、困難や困難に遭遇することがあります。私たちが敵に捕らえられることはおそらくないでしょうが、自分自身や愛する人の健康状態が悪いために、忍耐力や信仰が試されるかもしれません。失業や経済的挫折によって忍耐力や信仰が試されるかもしれません。他人の無思慮な行為によって忍耐力や信仰を試されるかもしれません。私たちは、聖約の道から逸れることを選んだ家族や他の愛する人たちによって、忍耐と信仰を試されるかもしれません。
In our own lives, we may also have difficulties and hardships. While we probably won’t be taken captive by our enemies, we may have our patience and our faith tried by poor health, either in ourselves or in a loved one. We may have our patience and our faith tried by unemployment or financial set-backs. We may have our patience and our faith tried through thoughtless acts of others. We may have our patience and our faith tried by family members or other loved ones who choose to stray from the covenant path.
このような人生の嵐が来たとき、私たちは安全な港に無事に戻れるよう導いてくれる天の助けに頼ることができることを知っています。主はニーファイにされたように、すぐに嵐を静められないかもしれませんが、私たちを強め、信仰をもって前進できるよう助けてくださいます。主に信頼し、御霊の促しに耳を傾けるなら、私たちは嵐に耐えることができます。
When these storms of life come, we know that we can rely on Heaven’s help to guide us safely back to a safe harbor. The Lord may not immediately calm the storm, as he did for Nephi, but he will strengthen us and help us to go forward with faith. We can endure the storm, as we put our trust in the Lord and listen to the promptings of the Spirit.
試練が不公平に思えるとき、忘れ去られたように思えるとき、孤独に思えるとき、私たちはリバティーの監獄で暗黒の時を過ごしていた預言者ジョセフ・スミスに語られた主の言葉を思い出す必要があります。「息子よ、あなたはこのことを知りなさい。すなわち、これらのことはすべて、あなたに経験を与え、あなたの益となるであろう」。
When our trials seem unfair, when it seems like we have been forgotten, when it seems like we are all alone, we need to remember the words of the Lord to the Prophet Joseph Smith during his dark hours in Liberty jail, “know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience and shall be for thy good.”
自分が耐えられる以上の罰を受けていると感じたり、自分以外にこのような試練や困難を経験するものは誰もいないと感じるなら、ジョセフに対する主の次の言葉は物事を前向きにとらえる助けとなります。「人の子はこれらすべての下に身を落した。あなたは人の子よりも大いなる者であろうか」
If we feel like we are being punished beyond our ability, that no one else has ever had to endure the trials and hardships that we are experiencing, the Lord’s next words to Joseph help to put things in perspective: “The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?”
新しい週が始まります。私たちは決して見捨てられず、愛に満ちた天父の息子、娘であるという知識に感謝しましょう。イエス・キリストを信じる信仰をもって、人生の嵐や試練に立ち向かいましょう。義にもかかわらず苦しみを味わった先人たちのことを思い起こしましょう。彼らの経験から力を得て、聖約の道にしっかりととどまっていましょう。
As we go through this week, let’s be grateful for our knowledge that we are sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father who will never abandon us. Let’s face the storms and trials of life with faith in Jesus Christ. Let’s remember those who have gone before us who have also suffered in spite of their righteousness. Let’s take strength from their experiences and keep our feet firmly planted on the covenant path.
