そこでわたしモロナイは、これらのことを書き記すように命じられている。このことによって、悪がなくなるようにするためであり、またサタンが人の子らの心を支配する力を持つことなく、彼らが絶えず善を行うように促されてあらゆる義の源に来て、救われるときが来るようにするためである。エテル書８：２６

Wherefore, I, Moroni, am commanded to write these things that evil may be done away, and that the time may come that Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men, but that they may be persuaded to do good continually, that they may come unto the fountain of all righteousness and be saved.  Ether 8:26

エテル書は、大きな祝福を受けながらも福音を拒み、深刻な悪に陥った人々の悲しい物語です。平和で幸福な時期が何度かありましたが、それは長く続きませんでした。彼らの歴史の大部分は、権力に飢えた人々、権力を得るためなら手段を選ばない人々の物語です。

The book of Ether is the sad story of a people who had great blessings given to them, but who rejected the gospel and fell into serious wickedness.  While they did have a few periods of peace and happiness, those times did not last very long.  In much of their history, it is a story of people hungry for power, people who were willing to do anything to gain power.

主は彼らに福音の原則を教えるため、多くの預言者を遣わされました。人々には悔い改める機会が何度もありましたが、預言者を拒み、追い出したり殺したりしました。

The Lord sent many prophets to them, to teach them the principles of the gospel.  The people had many opportunities to repent, but they rejected the prophets and either drove them out or killed them.

これは「秘密結社」の物語です。その秘密結社は、権力を欲する者によりいつも設立されました。秘密結社に加わった人々は、リーダーが要求するあらゆることを行うことに同意しました。そこは闇の中で活動する邪悪な人々でいっぱいでした。彼らは多くの人々を殺害し、闇の業を広めました。

It is a story of “secret combinations”.  These secret combinations were always started by a person who was desirous of power.  Those who joined the secret combinations agreed to do anything that their leaders asked them to do.  These secret combinations were full of wicked people who worked in darkness.  They murdered many people and spread works of darkness.

聖典には、これらの秘密結社を組織しているのはサタンであると書かれています。人々は秘密結社に対して何度も警告を受けていましたが、それでも彼らはそれを支持し、協力しました。秘密結社のせいで、ヤレド人は壊滅させられました。

We are told in the scriptures that Satan is the one who organizes these secret combinations.  The people were warned many times against secret combinations, but they still supported and joined them.  It was because of these secret combinations that the Jaredites were all destroyed.

モルモン書には、預言者が秘密結社の力に対して人々に警告を与えた例が数多くあります。例えば、預言者の警告は、第2ニーファイ9章、アルマ37章、ヒラマン6章、第3ニーファイ6章、第4ニーファイ1章、モルモン8章、エテル書など多くの箇所に見られます。

We find many instances in the Book of Mormon where prophets have warned the people against the power of secret combinations.  For example, prophetic warnings can be found in 2 Nephi 9, in Alma 37, in Helaman 6, in 3 Nephi 6, in 4 Nephi 1, in Mormon 8, and in many places in Ether.  

モロナイは、すべての人々への警告として、ヤレド人の邪悪さについて書いたと述べています。モルモン書は特に私たちの時代のために書かれたと教えられています。つまり、モロナイの警告は、特に私たちへの警告なのです。モロナイは福音を拒み、秘密結社に加わることを選んだ人々に何が起こったのかを私たちが理解できるように、ヤレド人の例を私たちに伝えています。

Moroni says he writes about the Jaredite wickedness as a warning to all people.  We have been told that the Book of Mormon was written specifically for our time.  That means that Moroni’s warnings are warnings for us in particular.  He shares the example of the Jaredites with us so we can see what happened to those who rejected the gospel and chose instead to join secret combinations.

モロナイが私たちに懇願しているのは、悪がなくなり，すべての人が悔い改めて救い主イエス・キリストのもとに来るように説くことです。モロナイは、ヤレド人の邪悪と悲しみの物語と、悔い改めた人々の祝福された状態を対比させています。

Moroni’s plea to us is that evil may be done away and that all people might be persuaded to repent and to come unto our Savior Jesus Christ.  He contrasts the Jaredite story of wickedness and sorrow with the blessed state of those who repent. 

悔い改めて戒めを守ることを選ぶ者は、聖典に約束されているすべての祝福を受けます。「あらゆる義の源に来る」者は救われます。悲しいことに、福音を拒む者は、イエス・キリストに従うことから得られる祝福と幸福を失うことになります。

Those who choose to repent and keep the commandments will receive all the blessings that are promised in the scriptures.  Those who “come unto the fountain of all righteousness” will be saved.  Sadly, those who reject the gospel will forfeit those same blessings and the happiness that comes from following Jesus Christ.  

新しい週が始まります。預言者モロナイの警告を覚えて過ごしましょう。主は闇の中では働かれないということを覚えておきましょう。「悪がなくなるように」というモロナイの嘆願を忘れないようにしましょう。最善を尽くし、すべての人、特に自分自身に「絶えず善を行う」よう薦めましょう。「あらゆる義の源に来て」救いを得ましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember the warnings of the prophet Moroni.  Let’s remember that the Lord does not work in darkness.  Let’s remember Moroni’s plea that “evil may be done away”.  Let’s do our best to persuade everyone, but especially ourselves, to “do good continually”.  Let’s “come unto the fountain of all righteousness” and be saved.
