For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. Revelation 22:18-19
今年の新約聖書の学習過程の最後にあるこの聖句で、使徒ヨハネは自分の書いた言葉に変更を加える者についての厳しい声明でその執筆を終えています。
In this, our last scripture from our New Testament study this year, the Apostle John ends his writing with a strong statement about anyone who changes the words that he has written.
もしヨハネが書き残した言葉に書き加える者があれば、神はその者にこの書に書かれているすべての災いを与えると、そして、もしヨハネが書いた言葉から何かを取り除く者がいれば、神はその人の祝福をいのちの書から取り去られると警告しています。
He says that if anyone adds to the words of his book, God will give that person all the plagues that are written in the book. And, if anyone takes away any of the words that John wrote, God will take away his blessings from the book of life.
これは、私たちにはごく当たり前のことに聞こえます。ニーファイは、多くの「分かりやすくて尊い」ことがが悪人によって聖典から取り除かれると書き残しています。ヨハネの黙示録には、確かに多くの「分かりやすくて尊い」ことが記されています。おそらく、これは聖書の中で最も理解しがたいものかもしれません。
This all sounds very normal to us. Nephi taught us that many “plain and precious” things would be taken away from the scriptures by evil men. The Book of Revelation certainly has many “plain and precious” things taken away from it. It is perhaps the most difficult book of the Bible for us to understand.

It is very clear that John wrote that warning specifically for the Book of Revelation. He had written other letters and messages to the Church previously, but the Book of Revelation contained very important doctrine regarding the end of the world.

It is interesting that some people try to use these verses to prove that the Book of Mormon cannot be the word of God. They claim that accepting the Book of Mormon is adding to the words of the book.

Since the Bible did not exist when John wrote those words, he was not referring to the Bible. He was only referring to his own writings.

There was no Bible until the Council of Nicea met in 325 AD to determine which of all the writings that still existed should be included in the Bible.
ヨハネはニーファイのように、聖典の中で多くのことが失われたり、変更されたりすることを警告しました。現代の私たちは、何が真実で何が偽りかを思い悩む必要はありません。主は私たちを教え導くために、預言者と使徒を与えてくださいました。私たちには、真の教義について証してくださる聖霊がおられます。
John, like Nephi, was warning us that many things would be lost or changed in the scriptures. For us today, there is no need to wonder what is true and what is false. The Lord has given us prophets and apostles to lead and guide us. We have the Holy Ghost to testify to us about true doctrine.
新しい週が始まります。古代の預言者たちから受け継いだ聖句に感謝の気持ちをもって過ごしましょう。他の時代で、他の場所で、主からのメッセージを記録するために犠牲を払い、懸命に働いた彼らのことを忘れないようにしましょう。ヨハネの記録は私たちにとって非常に理解しにくいものかもしれませんが、研究し、祈り、聖霊の導きに耳を傾けるとき、主が私たちに望んでおられることが理解できるようになるでしょう。熱心に聖文の研究に励みましょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s be grateful for the scriptures that have come down to us from ancient prophets. Let’s remember their sacrifices and hard work to record the messages from the Lord in other times and in other places. Let’s remember that, although John’s writing may be very difficult for us to understand, as we study, pray, and listen for the direction of the Holy Ghost, we will be able to understand the things that the Lord wants us to know. Let’s be diligent in our study of the scriptures.
