And verily I say unto thee that thou shalt lay aside the things of this world, and seek for the things of a better. Doctrine & Covenants 25:10
教義と聖約の第25章で、主は預言者ジョセフ・スミスの妻、エマ・スミスに指示を与えておられます。エマは、夫を助け、福音についての筆記と研究、教会員に説き勧め、教会の集会で使用する神聖な賛美歌の選択など、多くの責任を与えらました。
In Section 25 of the Doctrine & Covenants, the Lord gives instructions to Emma Smith, the wife of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Emma is given a number of assignments, including supporting her husband, writing and learning about the gospel, exhorting the Church, and selecting sacred hymns for use in Church meetings.
それらの責任と指示は特にエマに宛てたものですが、ひとつ、エマだけでなく私たちにも重要な戒めがあります。
While these assignments and instructions related specifically to Emma, one particular commandment is important for us as well as for Emma.
10節で、エマは「この世のものを捨てる」ように、また、この世のものに目を向けるのではなく、「この世に勝るものを求める」ように命じられています。
In verse 10, Emma is commanded to “lay aside the things of this world”. Instead of focusing on the things of this world, Emma is to “seek for things of a better” world.
これは、私たち自身の生活にも当てはまる教えです。
This is something that applies to us in our own lives.
私たちは皆、忙しい生活を送っています。日々、時間に追われ、やらなければならないことがたくさんあります。
We all have busy lives. We all have many demands on our time. We all have many things that we need to do each day.
もちろん、生きるために必要なこともあります。生活費を稼ぎ、食べ物や着る服を用意し、家族の世話をする必要があります。
Some of those things are necessary. We have to earn the money that we need to live here. We need to have food to eat and clothes to wear. We have to take care of our family members.
しかし、私たちが時間を費やしていることの中には、本当に必要ではないものもあります。単なる「この世のもの」に過ぎないことに、多くの時間を使ってしまうこともあります。
However, some things that we spend time on may not be necessary. Some of the things that we use our time for are simply “things of this world”.
この世は重要ではないことに容易に目が行くようにできています。この世は「この世のもの」を魅力的で価値があるかのように見せています。「この世のもの」の多くは楽しくて刺激的です。たとえば、ソーシャルメディアは膨大な時間を簡単に奪ってしまいます。
The world makes it easy to focus on things that are not important. The world makes “the things of this world” seem important and attractive. Many of the “things of this world” are fun and exciting. Social media, for example, can consume an enormous amount of our time.
だからこそ、時間の大切さを忘れてはなりません。誰もが一日に与えられた時間は同じです。24時間をどのように使うかは、私たち次第なのです。
It is important to remember that our time is very precious. We each have the same amount of time each day. We have 24 hours to use in any way we choose.
私たちは毎日、どのように時間を使っているでしょうか？私たちは何を優先しているでしょうか？貴重な時間を、どのようなことに費やしているでしょうか？
How are we using our time each day? What are our priorities? What do we spend our precious time doing?
エマと同じように、私たちも霊的な事柄を優先するように勧告されています。私たちは主から「より良いもの」に、より多くの時間を費やすように教えられています。永遠の利益をもたらさない、時間を無駄に費やすこの世のものを「捨てる」ように言われています。
Like Emma, we are counseled to make spiritual things a priority in our life. We are instructed by the Lord to spend more time on the “things of a better” world. We are told to “lay aside” those things of this world that we spend our time on that do not have any eternal benefit.
世の中は私たちの関心を引こうと誘惑します。価値があるかのように見せかける多くのものがあります。お金や大きな家、派手な服、名声、そして高価なもので惑わします。
The world wants us to pay attention to it. It offers many things that seem important. It offers money, big houses, fancy clothes, fame, and expensive things.
しかし、これらのものは本当に大切でしょうか？私たちがこの世を去るとき、それらを持っていくことはできません。それらは、私たちに永遠の祝福をもたらすものではありません。
The problem is that none of those things are important. None of those things go with us when we leave this life. None of those things brings us any eternal blessings.
新しい週が始まります。「この世のものを捨て、より良いものを探す」ことを意識して過ごしましょう。この世的なものではなく、霊的なものにもっと目を向け、時間を上手に使いましょう。時間の使い方を見直し、必要に応じて優先順位を調整しましょう。この主の戒めに従うために最善を尽くしましょう。
As we go through this next week, let’s seek to “lay aside the things of this world and seek for things of a better” world. Let’s focus more on spiritual things and less on worldly things. Let’s review how we spend our time and, if necessary, adjust our priorities. Let’s do our best to follow this commandment of the Lord.
