ところで、わたしの愛する同胞よ、わたしはあなたがたがイスラエルの聖者であるキリストのもとに来て、キリストの救いと、キリストの贖いの力にあずかるように望んでいる。まことにキリストのもとに来て、自分自身をキリストへのささげ物としてささげ、断食と祈りを続け、最後まで堪え忍びなさい。そうすれば、主が生きておられるように、あなたがたは救われるであろう。オムナイ書１：２６

And now, my beloved brethren, I would that ye should come unto Christ, who is the Holy One of Israel, and partake of his salvation and the power of his redemption.  Yea, come unto him, and offer your whole soul as an offering unto him, and continue in fasting and praying, and endure to the end; and as the Lord liveth ye will be saved.  Omni 1:26

The book of Omni is interesting.  Although the book covers a period of about 320 years, and there are 5 different writers, it is only 4 pages long.  Apparently, this was a time of wickedness among the Nephites.  Even Omni himself, the son of Jarom, confesses that he is a wicked man and has not kept the commandments of the Lord.  One of the writers, Chemish, only wrote one single verse!

The last writer in the book is Amaleki, who was a righteous man.  He is the one that introduces us to king Mosiah and the people of Zarahemla.  Amaleki did not have any sons, so there was no one to whom he could pass on the Small Plates of Nephi.  Recognizing that king Mosiah was a righteous king, Amaleki delivered the Small Plates to him.  Thus, the Small Plates of Nephi come to an end.  From the book of Mosiah through the book of 4th Nephi, the record is taken from the Large Plates of Nephi, as abridged by Mormon.

In his final closing message, Amaleki testifies of the coming of the Savior, Jesus Christ.  He bears a strong and powerful testimony that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer of all mankind.  He reminds us that everyone may come unto Christ and partake of salvation.  There is no limit as to who can receive that great blessing.  There are no special requirements.  Anyone who desires to receive the promised blessings and who will keep the commandments can be saved.

Amaleki teaches us the steps that we need to take to receive the blessing of salvation.

First, we must “come unto him”.  In other words, we need to be taught about Jesus Christ and begin to have faith in him.  We need to be willing to keep his commandments.

Next, we must offer our souls as an offering.  This means that we serve the Lord in whatever capacity we are asked to serve in.  It means that we must listen to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and act on them.  It means that we must serve others and treat everyone as our Savior did.  It means going forward with faith, not always knowing why we are asked to do something or even how we will be able to accomplish the task.

After that, in order to increase in faith and humility, we must continue in fasting and praying.  This is one of the small and simple things of the gospel.  Fasting and praying with real intent and purpose brings great spiritual strength to our lives.  Fasting and praying with real intent and purpose helps us become stronger in our humility.  Fasting and praying with real intent and purpose helps the spiritual side of our nature gain power over the physical side of our nature.

最後に、そして最も重要なことですが、アマレカイは私たちに最後まで耐えなければならないことを教えています。これらすべてのことを数週間、数か月、さらには数年間行うだけでは十分ではありません。私たちは死すべき生涯の最後まで、聖約の道を歩み続ける必要があります。福音の小さくて簡単なことを行うとき、私たちは聖霊に導かれて正しい選択をし、何が正しいのかを知ることができます。

Finally, and most importantly, Amaleki teaches us that we must endure to the end.  It is not enough to do all these things for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years.  We need to stay on the covenant path for the rest of our mortal life.  As we do the small and simple things of the gospel, we will be guided by the Holy Ghost to make correct choices and to know what is right to do.

As we go through this next week, let’s spend some time thinking about the message of Amaleki.  Let’s remember that the gospel plan provides great blessings for doing the small and simple things.  Let’s remember the steps that Amaleki has taught us and do our best to follow them.  Finally, let’s do our best to stay on the covenant path every day this week.
