Let’s continue our discussion of Lehi that we started in the last meeting.
It is in those first pages of The Book of Mormon that many small details of the life and actions of Lehi and his family are recorded. How did the Prophet Joseph Smith get so many things correct? Things that were not known to westerners at the time? And especially things that were not known to an uneducated farm boy?
For example:
1. Fires
We are told that Lehi and his family did not make fires while they traveled in the wilderness.
Why was that? Pioneers in America always had a fire at night, to cook food and to provide warmth. But we are told that Lehi and his family ate raw meat during the travels. It was only when they reached the seashore that Nephi starts building fires.
Unlike the American pioneers, it has always been the practice of those who travel through the deserts of Arabia to not use fire at night. It was a very dangerous place. There were many robbers and raiding parties. A fire could be seen for many miles in the desert and would attract those robbers. English explorers in the 1800’s write about having to suffer during cold nights in the desert because their Arab guides would not let them build fires.
How did the Prophet Joseph Smith know about that?
2. Steadfast Valleys?
“Like unto this valley, firm, and steadfast, and immovable.” (1 Nephi 2:10)
What western writer would ever had made such a clumsy mistake? We know that it is mountains that are firm, steadfast, and immovable, not valleys. But in Arabia, it is the great valleys that are firm, steadfast, and immovable. It is the valleys that are the trade routes, that provide a way to escape, that provide protection to men and animals. Those qualities of firmness, steadfastness, and safety, which other nations attribute to mountains, the Arabs attribute to valleys.
How did the Prophet Joseph Smith know about that?
3. Zoram
Why did Zoram decide to go with Nephi and his brothers? When Zoram discovered that he had been tricked by Nephi, why did he stay? What did Nephi do that convinced Zoram to stay? Nephi really only had two choices. He could convince Zoram to stay with them, or he could kill Zoram.
Nephi did the only thing that would convince Zoram to stay with them. It is something that no westerner would have done. Nephi swore an oath to Zoram that they would not harm him and that he would be a free man.
The app What is astonishing to us is the affect that the oath had on Zoram. He immediately relaxed and swore an oath back to Nephi that he would stay with them. When he did that, Nephi says, “our fears did cease concerning him?”
What was it about these oaths that was so powerful?
An oath is the one thing that is most sacred among the desert people. But not just any oath will do. To be most binding and solemn, the oath must be by the life of something, even if it is just a blade of grass. The most solemn oath was “by my own life”. The only oath that was more powerful and more sacred that that was “by the life of God”, or in other words, “as the Lord liveth”. (1 Nephi 4:32)
How did the Prophet Joseph Smith know about that?
Finally, the Book of Mormon is not a history of the American Indians. Even Church members, who should know better, sometimes make this mistake when telling non-members what The Book of Mormon is about.
The Book of Mormon history starts in the Old World.In fact, Lehi and his family thought they had found their “promised land” when they arrived at Bountiful, by the sea. They were very upset a few years later when Nephi told them he had been instructed to build a ship that would take them across the ocean.
The Nephites were only one small group out of many that the Lord brought to the New World. We know about the Nephites, the Mulekites, and the Jaredites, but there may have been many other groups as well. Nothing in The Book of Mormon says it is a history of the American Indians, or even a history of all the people in the New World. It is only a brief history of one small group, one of many, that the Lord brought here.
These are just some of the small but very important details that come to us in the first few pages of The Book of Mormon. There is no way that a young farm boy, with almost no opportunity to attend school, could have known these things. Even the most educated people in America did not know about these desert customs.
Joseph Smith translated The Book of Mormon by the power of God.
Thus, we need to carefully read and study every day the things The Book of Mormon teaches us.

リーハイと家族は荒野を旅するときに火を使わないように言われました。なぜなのでしょう？アメリカの開拓者達は夜にはいつも火を使い、料理をしたり暖を取ったりしました。しかし、リーハイと家族は旅の間は生肉を食べるように言われました。彼らが海岸にたどり着いたときにだけ、ニーファイは火を使い始めました。
アメリカの開拓者達とは違ってアラビアの砂漠を旅する者たちは夜に火を使わないのが慣わしでした。とても危険な場所だったからです。沢山の泥棒や山賊達がいました。火は砂漠では何マイルも先から見え、それらの泥棒たちを引き寄せたのです。1800年代のイギリスの探検家たちはアラブ人のガイド達が火を使わせてくれないために、砂漠の夜の寒さに苦しんだと記述しています。
どのようにして預言者ジョセフ・スミスはそれらのことが分かったのでしょうか。
２．確固とした谷？
この谷のように硬く確固としてゆるぎなくあるように。(第一 ニーファイ 2:10)
まさか。こんな不器用な間違いを書いた西洋の作家がいたでしょうか？私達は山が堅く確固としてゆるぎないのは知っています。谷ではありません。しかしアラビアでは、巨大な渓谷は堅く確固としてゆるぎないのです。渓谷は貿易ルートであり、人と動物に逃げる道を備えたり、保護する場所でもあるのです。他の国の人々が山にあてはめる堅く確固として安全という属性をアラブ人は谷に当てはめたのです。
どのようにして預言者ジョセフ・スミスはそれらのことが分かったのでしょうか。
３．ゾーラム
なぜゾーラムはニーファイと彼の兄弟たちと共に行くことを決意したのでしょうか？ゾーラムはニーファイに騙されたとわかった時、どうして一緒にいたのでしょうか？ニーファイはどのようにしてゾーラムが一緒にいるように説得したのでしょうか？
ニーファイには実際2つの選択肢しかありませんでした。ゾーラムに一緒にいるよう説得するか、殺すかです。ニーファイができたのはゾーラムに一緒にいるように説得することだけでした。それは西洋人がやらない方法です。ニーファイはゾーラムに彼を傷つけず、自由な人にすると誓いを立てたのです。
ゾーラムに誓いの効果があったのは私達には驚くべきことです。彼はすぐに緊張から開放され、彼らと一緒にいるという誓いをニーファイに返したのです。彼がそれを行った時、ニーファイは「彼についての心配はなくなった。」と述べています。
どうしてこの誓いはそんなに効果があったのでしょうか？
砂漠の民にとって誓いは最も神聖なものの一つです。しかし、誓いだけではありません。最も拘束力があり厳格であるためには、誓いは単なる草の刄であっても、何かの命でなければなりません。最も厳格な誓いは「自らの命により」です。
唯一もっと強力でもっと神聖な誓いは、「神の命により」言い換えれば「主が生ける限り」です。(第一ニーファイ４：３２)
どのようにして預言者ジョセフ・スミスはそれらのことが分かったのでしょうか。
最後にモルモン書はアメリカインディアンの歴史ではありません。
よく知識を得た教会員でさえ、モルモン書が何であるかを非教会員に紹介するときに時々、この間違いを起こします。モルモン書の歴史は旧世界から始まります。実際に、リーハイと家族は海のそばのバウンティフルにたどり着いたとき、約束の地を見つけたと思いました。ですから数年後ニーファイが船を作り海を渡るように導かれたと彼らに言ったとき、彼らはとても怒ります。
ニーファイ人は主が新しい地に導かれた多数のうちの小さなグループの一つでしかありません。私達はニーファイ人、ミュレカイ人やジェレド人について知っていますが、同じように他にも多数のグループがあったのです。
モルモン書はアメリカインディアンの歴史であるとか、新しい世界に来た人々の歴史でるとはどこにも書かれていません。ただ、主がここに導かれた沢山のうちの一つの小さなグループのかいつまんだ歴史なのです。
これらは小さなことですが、モルモン書の最初の数ページにおいて私達にはとても大切な詳細です。ほとんど学校に行くことのなかった農場の少年がこれらのことを知っているなど、ありえないことです。アメリカでもっとも教育を受けた人々でさえ、これらの砂漠の慣習を知り得なかったでしょう。
ジョセフ・スミスはモルモン書を神の力で翻訳しました。
ですから私達はモルモン書が教えている事柄を注意深く読み、毎日学ぶ必要があります。
