And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save you lives by a great deliverance.  So now it was not you that sent me hither, but God:  Genesis 45:7-8

One of the greatest stories in the Old Testament is that of Joseph, who was sold into Egypt by his brothers.  It is a story of betrayal, of suffering, of repentance, and of forgiveness.  It shows how the Lord prepares things and how things that appear in the short term to be terrible punishments turn out to be great blessings instead.

旧約聖書の最もすばらしい物語のひとつは、兄たちによってエジプトに売られたヨセフの物語です。それは裏切り、苦しみ、悔い改め、そして赦しの物語です。主がどのように事を準備されるのか、そして短期的にはひどい罰であるように見えることが、大きな祝福に繋がることを教えています。

Joseph was the 11th of 12 sons born to Jacob.  For many years, Joseph was the youngest in the family and, as often happens to the youngest in families, he was given special attention.  That made his older brothers jealous of him.  One day, when they were all out working in the fields, the older brothers decided to punish Joseph by selling him as a slave.  How terrible that must have been for Joseph.

ヨセフはヤコブの12人の息子の11番目でした。ヨセフは家族の中で最年少でした。そして、末っ子にはよくあることですが、彼は特にかわいがられました。その結果、兄たちの嫉妬をかうことになりました。ある日、畑で働いていたとき、兄たちはヨセフを奴隷として売ってしまおうと決めました。ヨセフにとってそれは恐ろしいことだったに違いありません。

When he got to Egypt, he was purchased by Potiphar, who treated him well.  Joseph worked hard and did a good job.  Things were starting to go well for Joseph, but then Potiphar’s evil wife made false accusations against Joseph and he was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit.  

彼がエジプトに着いたとき、ポテパルに買われ、善い扱いを受けました。ヨセフは一生懸命働き、良い仕事をしました。ヨセフにとって状況は順調に進んでいましたが、その後、ポテパルの邪悪な妻がヨセフに対して虚偽の告発を行い、彼が犯していない罪で獄屋に入れられました。

This was another great trial for Joseph.  But once again, Joseph worked hard and was soon in charge of the prison.  While in prison, he correctly interpreted the dreams of two of the other prisoners.  Those dreams came true and the two prisoners promised Joseph they would tell Pharaoh about Joseph.  Unfortunately for Joseph, those two prisoners forgot their promises.

これはヨセフにとってもう一つの大きな試練でした。しかし、ヨセフは再び一生懸命働くことで、すぐに獄屋の責任を受けることになりました。獄屋にいる間、二人の囚人の夢を解き明かしました。それらの夢は実現し、二人の囚人はヨセフについてパロに話すとヨセフに約束しました。残念ながら、その二人の囚人は約束を忘れてしまいました。

It was not until about 2 years later that Pharaoh had a disturbing dream and wanted to know what it meant.  Finally, one of the prisoners remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him.  Joseph was able to interpret the dream for Pharaoh and told him what his dream meant.

二年ほどたったある時、パロが不穏な夢を見て、それが何を意味するのか知りたいと思いました。囚人の一人がやっとヨセフのことを思い出し、パロに話しました。ヨセフはパロの夢を解き明かし、夢が何を意味するのかを話しました。

Pharaoh made Joseph a ruler in Egypt, second in command of the entire country.  Joseph worked hard and prepared Egypt for the coming famine.  When the famine arrived, there was plenty of food in Egypt.

パロはヨセフをエジプトのつかさとし、国全体を彼に委ねました。ヨセフは一生懸命働き、来るべき飢饉に備えてエジプトを準備しました。飢饉が到来したとき、エジプトにはたくさんの食料がありました。

But in Israel, there was no food.  Jacob heard that there was food in Egypt and sent his 10 oldest sons to Egypt to buy food.  When they got there, Joseph recognized them, but they did not recognize Joseph.  Joseph had power to punish his brothers for their wickedness.  He could have had them put into prison or even killed.

しかし、イスラエルには食料がありませんでした。ヤコブはエジプトに食料があると聞き、食料を買うために十人の年長の息子たちをエジプトに送りました。彼らがそこに着いたとき、ヨセフは兄たちだとわかりましたが、兄たちはヨセフだと気が付きませんでした。ヨセフには、兄弟たちの邪悪さを罰する権力がありました。彼らを獄屋に入れたり、殺したりすることさえできたはずです。

Instead, he freely forgave them of their evil actions.  He gave them food and sent them back home to get Jacob and his family.  He told his brothers that, in spite of the bad things that they had done, it was not their fault.  Joseph said all those things were done by the Lord to prepare Joseph to be able to save his family.  

そうする代わりに、ヨセフは兄たちの邪悪な行動を赦したのです。彼らに食物を与え、ヤコブと彼の家族をエジプトに連れてくるために彼らを家に送り返しました。ヨセフは兄弟たちの悪行にもかかわらず、彼らを責めませんでした。これらすべてのことは、家族を救う備えをするために主がなされたことだと言いました。

What a great story of forgiveness.  What a wonderful story of how the Lord works in our lives to turn hardships into blessings.  

なんと言う素晴らしい赦しの話でしょう。生活の中の苦難を祝福に変えるために主がどのように働かれるかを教えている素晴しい話です。

This did not happen quickly.  It was probably more than 20 years from the time that Joseph was sold as a slave to the time that his brothers arrived to buy food.  Joseph had to suffer many things during that time.  But he was always kept the commandments and did his best to work hard in whatever situation he was in.  

このことはすぐには起こりませんでした。ヨセフが奴隷として売られてから、兄たちが食料を買うためにやって来たのは、おそらく二十年以上後のことでした。その間、ヨセフは多くの苦しみを味わいました。しかし、彼は常に戒めを守り、どんな状況にあっても一生懸命働こうと最善を尽くしました。

As we go through this week, let’s remember the story of Joseph and his family.  Let’s remember how he suffered through many trials for many years, but always did his best.  Let’s remember how he forgave his brothers for the terrible things they did to him.  Are there people in our own family that you should forgive?
