Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye are little children and ye have not as yet understood how great blessings the Father hath in his own hands and prepared for you; And ye cannot bear all things now; nevertheless, be of good cheer, for I will lead you along.  The kingdom is yours and the blessings thereof are yours, and the riches of eternity are yours.  Doctrine & Covenants 78:17-18

1832年3月、預言者ジョセフ・スミスは、教義と聖約78章の啓示を受けました。この章で主は、貧しい人々を助けるための「倉」を設けるように命じられました。これは、聖徒たちが地上において物質的に平等となるようにという目的がありました。第6節では、主がこう語られます。「地上のものにおいて平等でなければ、天においても平等にはなれない」。

In March of 1832, the Prophet Joseph Smith received Section 78 of the Doctrine and Covenants.  In this Section, the Lord commands the Prophet to establish a “storehouse for the poor”.  This was to be done so that the Saints would be equal in earthly things.  In verse 6, the Lord teaches us “for if ye are not equal in earthly things, ye cannot be equal in obtaining heavenly things”.

この教えは、教会がすべての面で平等を目指すべきだという原則の始まりとなるものでした。この啓示をきっかけに、「奉献の律法」や「共同制度」といった、財産を分かち合う教えが与えられました。

This was the beginning of the instructions given to the Church about being equal in all things.  Further revelations taught the Church about the law of consecration, about the United Order, about having all things in common.  

しかし、当時の聖徒たちはこの律法を完全に守ることができず、その代わりとして主は「什分の一の律法」や「断食の律法」を私たちに授けてくださいました。これらは今、私たちが日々従っている律法です。

As it happened, that the Saints were not able to live the law of consecration completely, the Lord gave us the law of tithing and of fast offerings instead.  These are the laws that we are to obey today.

この章ではまた、戒めを守る人々に主が豊かな祝福を備えてくださっていることが語られ、私たちはそのことを思い起こし、励まされます。主は、私たち一人ひとりにとって、天父が素晴らしい祝福を用意しておられると教えておられます。

In this Section, the Lord also gives encouragement to the Saints by reminding them of the great blessings that will come to those who keep the commandments.  We are taught that great blessings have been prepared for us by the Father.  

しかし主は、私たちがまだ子どもであり、そのすべてを理解できていないとも言われています。

However, the Lord also points out that we are still children and do not understand all things yet.  

なぜ、主は私たちを「子ども」と表現されるのでしょうか？

Why does the Lord say that we are still children?

それは、子どもが現実の世界や人生のすべてをまだ理解できていないように、私たちも、主が用意しておられる祝福のすべてをまだ把握できていないからです。

Just as a child has only a small understanding of the real world and all the things that happen in that world, we have only a small understanding of the blessings the Lord has prepared for those who keep his commandments.

これから先、主はさらに多くの偉大で素晴らしい事柄を明らかにしてくださるでしょう。私たちに求められているのは、その啓示を受けるために信仰を育み、備えることです。主は、信仰をもって歩む私たちを導き、教えてくださると約束しておられます。

Many great and wonderful things will be revealed by the Lord in the future.  Our duty is to develop the faith necessary to receive those revelations and to be prepared for the things to come.  The Lord has promised to lead us along and to teach and guide us as we press forward with faith.

私たちが忠実であり続けるなら、「永遠の富」が与えられるのです。今はそれがどれほど素晴らしいものか完全にはわからなくても、それが想像をはるかに超える祝福であることは確かです。

If we are faithful, we will be given the “riches of eternity”.  We do not as yet understand what all those blessings will be, but we do know that the blessings will be wonderful beyond our ability to even imagine now.

良い子どものように、イエス・キリストの福音についてできる限り学び、信仰と証を育てましょう。そしてやがては、神の王国で堅く立つ「大人」へと成長していきましょう。

Let us, like good children, learn all that we can about the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Let us grow in faith and in testimony.  Let us mature into stalwart “adults” in the Kingdom of God.
