それゆえ欺かれないように気をつけなさい。そして、欺かれないために熱心に最善の賜物を求め、それらが、何のために与えられているのかを常に覚えておきなさい。まことに、わたしはあなたがたに言う。それらは、わたしを愛してわたしのすべての戒めを守る者たちと、そうしようと努める者たちのためにあたえられる。　教義と聖約４６：８－９

Wherefore, beware lest ye are deceived; and that ye may not be deceived seek ye earnestly the best gifts, always remembering for what they are given.  For verily I say unto you, they are given for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments, and and him that seeketh so to do. Doctrine and Covenants 46:8-9

教義と聖約にあるこの聖句は安らぎと希望を私たちの生活や人生にもたらしてくれます。この聖句では主が霊的な贈物について聖徒に教えるようにと預言者ジョセフ・スミスに指示されました。

This scripture from the Doctrine and Covenants brings great peace and hope to our lives.  In this scripture, the Lord instructed the Prophet Joseph Smith to teach the Saints about spiritual gifts. 

この聖句には二つの重要な要素が含まれます。

There are two key elements in this scripture.

まず、私たちには「熱心に最善の贈物を求める」いうと責任があるということです。

First, we are told that we have a responsibility to “seek earnestly the best gifts”.  

英語の「to seek」には探すとか見つけるよう努力する、尋ねるといった意味があります。これは動作動詞です。「熱心に」と言う言葉には誠意を持ってとか、強い決意を持ってという意味があります。

In English, “to seek” means to look for, to try to find, to ask for.  It is an action verb.  The word “earnestly” means with serious purpose, with sincerity, with real intention.

ですから「熱心に探し求め」ようとするとき、私たちは最善の贈物を得るために熱心に努力することでしょう。私たちは最善の贈物を得るために誠意を持って努力します。私たちは最善の贈物を得るために強い決意を持って努力します。

So if we “seek earnestly”, we are trying hard to obtain the best gifts.  We are trying with sincerity to obtain the best gifts.  We are trying with real intent to obtain the best gifts.

次に、主がそれらの贈物をもって私たちを祝福される理由を述べています。「それらは、わたしを愛し、わたしのすべての戒めを守る者たちの益となるようにあたえられる」と。

Next, we are told why the Lord blesses us with those gifts.  We are told that “they are given for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments”.

私たちにはその「最善の贈物」を受ける資格があるでしょうか？確かに私たちは主を愛しています。しかし「すべての戒めを守るように」とも述べています。それは難しいことです。私たちの中で誰が全ての戒めを常に守っているでしょうか？もし一度でも失敗すると私たちは「最高の贈物」を受ける機会を無くすのでしょうか？

Do we qualify for the “best gifts”?  Well, we all love the Lord.  But it also says “keep all my commandments”.  That is a hard thing!  Do any of us keep ALL the commandments, all the time?  If we fail even once, do we lose our opportunity to receive the “best gifts”?

主は私たちの心をご存知です。私たちの弱さをご存知です。私たち自身以上に私たちのことをご存知です。主は慈悲を持って「そうしようと努める者たち」という表現を加えられました。

The Lord knows our hearts.  He knows our weaknesses.  He knows us better than we know ourselves.  In his mercy, he included the phrase “and him that seeketh so to do”.  

つまり私たちがたとえ不完全で弱く、時々罪を犯すようでも「最善の賜物」を受ける資格を持てるのです。

That means that even we imperfect, weak, and sometimes sinful people can still qualify for the “best gifts”.  

私たちが間違いを犯すことを主はご存知です。2016年の総大会でホーランド長老が指摘されたように「もし神が完全に忠実な人だけに報いをお与えになるとしたら，報いを受ける者のリストに載せられる名前は殆どない」でしょう。

The Lord knows that we will make mistakes.  As Elder Holland points out in his April 2016 General Conference talk, “if God were to reward only the perfectly faithful, He wouldn’t have much of a distribution list”.

私たちには希望があります。私たちは全員「最善の賜物」を受ける資格を得られるのです。私たちに必要な祝福を受けることが出来るのです。救い主の愛を感じることが出来るのです。

There is hope for all of us.  We can all qualify for the “best gifts”.  We can all receive the blessings that we need.  We can all feel of the Savior’s love.

新しい週が始まります。がんばって最善の賜物を「熱心に探し求め」ましょう。全ての戒めを守るようより努力してみましょう。私たちがたとえ間違いを犯すときでも主が私たちを愛し、努力し続けて欲しいと望んでおられることを忘れないようにしましょう。

Let’s try harder this week to “seek earnestly” the best gifts.  Let’s try harder to keep all the commandments.  Let’s try harder to remember, even when we make a mistake, that the Lord loves us and wants us to keep trying.

私たちは「熱心に求める」ならば、約束された全ての祝福を受けるということを私は知っています。主の戒めを守ろうとするとき、主は私たちを助け、導いてくださることを私は知っています。私たちにはそれが出来ることを知っています。

I know that as we “seek earnestly”, we will receive all the promised blessings.  I know that the Lord with help us and guide us as we try to keep his commandments.  I know that we can do this.
