それでわわたしニーファイは、主の命令に従い、行ってこの版を造り、これらのことを刻んだ。ニーファイ第二書５章３１

Wherefore, I, Nephi, to be obedient to the commandments of the Lord, went and made these plates upon which I have engraven these things.  2 Nephi 5:31

ニーファイ第二書５章で、ニーファイは多くの重要な出来事について述べています。まず、兄たちの怒りと憎しみのせいで、住んでいた場所を離れて荒野に逃げることを余儀なくされたことです。

In the 5th chapter of 2nd Nephi, Nephi tells us about many important events.  First, he tells us that because of the anger and hatred of his older brothers, he is forced to leave the place where they were all living and flee into the wilderness.  

主が夢の中で義人たちを連れて立ち去るように警告されたと彼は述べています。ゾーラムとその家族、サム、ヤコブ、ヨセフ、彼の姉妹たち、そして神の戒めを信じたすべての人々を連れて行くことになります。

He says the Lord warned in a dream to leave and to take with him those who were righteous.  He takes his family, Zoram and his family, Sam, Jacob, Joseph, his sisters, and all those who believed in the commandments of God.

They traveled for many days and started a new village.  Nephi tells us that he built a temple there in the new village.  He also tells us that he made weapons of war to protect themselves from their enemies.

ニーファイはレーマン人が反逆と福音を拒んだために彼らに降りかかった呪いについて述べています。この呪いは、ニーファイ人に福音を拒んだレーマン人と結婚してはならないということを物理的に思い起こすものでした。

Nephi tells us about a cursing that came upon the Lamanites because of their rebellion and their rejection of the gospel.  This cursing was a physical reminder to the Nephites that they should not inter-marry with the Lamanites, who had rejected the gospel.  

ニーファイは、彼らが長年幸せに暮らしたと述べています。この時点で、リーハイとその家族がエルサレムを離れてから約30年が経っていました。ニーファイは、自分の家族と人々の記録を自分で作った版に書き残していました。彼は時折、自分の言葉を金属板に刻むことがいかに難しいかを語っています。それは大変な作業であり、多くの時間を要し、多大な努力が必要です。

Nephi says that they lived in happiness for many years.  At this point, it had been about 30 years since Lehi and his family had left Jerusalem.  Nephi tells us that he had been keeping a record of his family and his people on plates that he had made.  He mentions at times how difficult it is to engrave his words on the metal plates.  It is hard work, it takes a lot of time, and it requires great effort.

30年後、突然、主はニーファイにもうひとつの版を作るように命じられました。この版はニーファイの小版として知られています。それが小版と呼ばれているのは、それが物理的に版が小さかったからではなく、小版にはページ数が少なかったからです。

Suddenly, after 30 years, the Lord commands Nephi to make a second set of plates.  These plates are known to us as the Small Plates of Nephi.  They are called the Small Plates not because the plates were physically smaller that the plates that he had been writing on, but because the Small Plates had fewer pages.

金属板に文字を刻むのがどれほど難しいことかを考えると、ニーファイは難しすぎますと主に苦情を言うこともできたでしょう。しかも、彼はすでに同じ情報を元の版に書き込んでいました。ではなぜ彼は、その歴史すべてをもうひとつの版に再び書かなければならなかったのでしょうか?

Given how hard it was to engrave words on metal plates, Nephi could have complained to the Lord that it was too hard.  Besides, he had already written that same information on his original plates.  Why does he have to write all that history again on a second set of plates?

しかし、ニーファイは苦情を言いませんでした。なぜもうひとつの版を作る必要があるのか彼は分かりませんでしたが、説明を求めませんでした。彼は主の戒めに従順でした。彼は主が命じられたとおり、もうひとつの版を作りました。

But, Nephi does not complain.  He does not understand why he needs to make another set of plates, but he does not demand an explanation.  He was obedient to the commandments of the Lord.  He made a second set of plates, as the Lord had commanded him.

これらふたつの版、ニーファイの大版とニーファイの小版は、300 年以上にわたって人々の歴史を記録するために使われました。

These two sets of plates, the Large Plates of Nephi, and the Small Plates of Nephi, continue being used to record the history of the people for more than 300 years.

主はニーファイ大版の翻訳の元本の一部が将来失われることをご存じでした。主は、重要な情報のバックアップが必要であることをご存知でした。イエスはニーファイにそのことをすべて話さず、ただ戒めを与えられたのです。

The Lord knew that some of the pages of the original translation of the Large Plates of Nephi would be lost.  He knew that there needed to be a backup copy of the important information.  He did not tell Nephi about all that, he just gave him a commandment.

主からの促しを受けたとき、私たちは立ち止まって「なぜこれをしなければならないのか」、あるいは「この業を果たす理由が見当たりません」と問うでしょうか。私たちは、指示されたことを実行する前に必ず説明を受ける必要があるでしょうか？それとも、私たちはニーファイのように、最初に説明を求めることなく、与えられた任務を遂行するでしょうか？

When we receive promptings from the Lord, do we stop and ask “why do I have to do this” or “I don’t see any reason for this task”?  Do we insist on having an explanation before we do what we have been prompted to do?  Or are we like Nephi, who went ahead with the task that he had been given without demanding an explanation first?  

新しい週が始まります。ニーファイの模範を心に留めながら過ごしましょう。主が私たちに何かをするよう促されるとき、不平を言ったり疑問を抱くことなく、その業を成し遂げるために最善を尽くすべきであることを忘れないでください。主はすべてのことをご存じであり、不必要な戒めや促しは決して与えられないことを覚えていましょう。たとえ理由が分からなくても、促しにすぐに従い、最善を尽くすことを学びましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember the example of Nephi.  Let’s remember that when the Lord gives us a prompting to do something, we should do our best to accomplish the task without complaining or questioning.  Let’s remember that the Lord knows all things and that he will never give us a commandment or a prompting that is not necessary.  Let’s learn to follow promptings immediately and to do our best, even when we do not understand the reason.
