また、すべてが信仰を持っているわけではないので、あなたがたは知恵の言葉を熱心に求め、互いに教え合いなさい。まことに、最良の書物から知恵の言葉を探し求め、研究によって、また信仰によって学問を求めなさい。教義と聖約　８８：１１８

And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.  

Doctrine & Covenants 88:118

この主の戒めは、カートランドで預言者ジョセフ・スミスに与えられたものです。それは、イエス・キリストの弟子としての私たちの務めについて、非常に明確な指針を与えてくれます。

This commandment of the Lord was given to the Prophet Joseph Smith in Kirtland.  It gives us very clear instructions on what our duties are as followers of Jesus Christ.

この聖句の基本テーマは「学問、研究を通して信仰が増す」ということです。私たちはまだ皆が信仰を持っているわけではないので、向上する必要があると教えられています。つまり、より大きな信仰を得る必要があるのです。その信仰は、聖典や預言者たちの言葉を学ぶことによって得られます。

The basic theme of this scripture is increasing our faith by study.  We are told that since we do not all have faith yet, we need to improve.  We need to gain greater faith.  We gain greater faith by studying the scriptures and the words of the prophets.

この聖句には、幾つか重要なポイントがあります。

There are several key points in this scripture.

まず、「熱心に求める」ように教えられています。ここでのキーワードは「熱心に」です。「熱心に」求めるとは学ぶ事を優先し、積極的に研究し、時間をかけて学ぶと言うことです。

First, we are told “seek ye diligently”.  The key word is “diligently”.  To seek “diligently” means to make learning a priority.  It means to be actively involved in studying.  It means spend time studying.

では、何を学び研究するよう言われているのでしょうか？

What are we told to study?

「最良の書物」から学ぶよう言われています。「最良の書物」には多くのものが含まれますが、最も重要なのは聖典です。聖典は私たちの日々の学びに欠かせないものであり、「熱心に」学ぶならば、毎日時間を取って聖典を学ぶことになるでしょう。

We are told to study “the best books”.  The “best books” include many things.  Most important among the best books are the scriptures.  The scriptures should be a part of our daily study.  If we are “seeking diligently”, we will make time each day to study the scriptures.

聖典以外にも、学ぶべき書物はあります。教会の雑誌や総大会の報告には、神の選ばれた指導者たちの信仰に満ちた大切なメッセージが含まれています。また、教会指導者によって書かれた本には、私たちを鼓舞し教えてくれるものが多くあります。

There are other books besides the scriptures that we should study.  We have the Church magazines and the General Conference reports, that contain important messages of faith from God’s chosen leaders.  We have other books written by Church leaders that can inspire and instruct us.  

さらに、福音に限らず、さまざまな分野に関する本を通して真理を学ぶこともできます。私たちは、真理が見いだせるあらゆる場所からそれを探し求めるように言われており、真実なことについて学ぶ必要があるのです。。

There are also other books about many different subjects that can help us learn true things.  We are not limited to just studying the gospel.  We are told that we need to seek out truth wherever it can be found.  We need to learn about anything that is true.

しかし自分一人で学び研究するだけでは十分ではありません。

But it is not enough just to study and learn by ourselves.

この聖句では私たちは「互いに教え合う」よう戒められています。学び研究するとき他の人にもその知識を分かち合う義務があるのです。そうするとき自分自身の信仰が強まるだけでなく、教えられる人の信仰も育まれまれていきます。

In this scripture, we are commanded to “teach one another”.  As we study and learn, we have a duty to share that knowledge with others.  As we do so, not only does our faith increase, but so does the faith of those we teach.

私たちの多くは、今現在あるいは過去、そして将来において、初等協会（Primary）、日曜学校、扶助協会、その他の組織でクラスを教える機会を持つでしょう。また、聖餐会で話すことによって教える機会もあります。ミニスタリングを通じて教えることもできます。

Many of us have now or have had in the past or will have in the future, opportunities to teach a class in Primary, in Sunday School, in Relief Society, or in one of the other organizations.  We have the opportunity to teach as we give a talk in Sacrament meeting.  We have an opportunity to teach as we visit our Visiting Teaching or Home Teaching families.

そして最も大切なのは、毎週家庭の夕べで私たちは自分の家族を教える機会があることです。家庭の夕べでは家族の全員が学んだことを分かち合う機会があります。小さな子どもたちでも、自分の考えを話すことを通して教える力を育むことができます。

Most importantly, we have an opportunity to teach our families each week in Family Home Evening.  In a Family Home Evening, everyone in the family can have an opportunity to share what they have learned.  Even our small children can have an opportunity to learn how to teach by sharing their own thoughts.

新しい週が始まります。学び研究することを「熱心に求め」ましょう。日々の聖典の勉強を優先させましょう。他の誰かに教える機会を探しましょう。この主の戒めを守るなら私たちの信仰が増し、忠実な者に約束されたすべての祝福を享受できるでしょう。

This week, let’s “seek diligently” to learn.    Let’s make daily scripture study a priority.  Let’s look for opportunities to teach others.  As we keep this commandment of the Lord, our faith will increase and we will receive all the blessings promised to the faithful.
