またこれは、信じる者が皆救われ、信じない者に義の裁きが下るようにするためでもある。そして、もし彼らが罪に定められるとすれば、自分の罪の宣告を自分自身に招くのである。ヒラマン１４：２９

And this to the intent that whosoever will believe might be saved, and that whosoever will not believe, a righteous judgement might come upon them; and also if they are condemned, they bring upon themselves their own condemnation.  Helaman 14:29

ヒラマン書の最後の数章には、サムエルという名の預言者のことが書かれています。サムエルはレーマン人で、ニーファイ人を教えるために遣わされました。

In the last few chapters of the Book of Helaman, we read the account of a prophet named Samuel.  Samuel was a Lamanite and had been sent to teach the Nephites.  

この時代、義人であったのはレーマン人であり、悪人であったのはニーファイ人であったのは興味深いことです。モルモン書の中でよく見られるように、ニーファイ人は大きな祝福を受けました。彼らは平和を得て、裕福になりました。しかし、後に高慢になり、頑固になり、これらの祝福がすべて主から与えられたものであることを忘れてしまいます。彼らは邪悪になり、義人に与えられる祝福を失いました。

It is interesting that during this time, it was the Lamanites who were righteous and the Nephites who were wicked.  As frequently happens in the Book of Mormon story, the Nephites have great blessings given to them.  They have peace.  They grow wealthy. They then become proud and stubborn, forgetting that all those blessings come from the Lord.  They fall into wickedness and lose those blessings that come to the righteous.

サムエルはニーファイ人に説教し、悔い改めなければ罰が下ると警告しました。最も重要なのは、サムエルがあと 5 年で救い主が誕生することを告げたことです。救い主が生まれる日には、昼と夜がありますが、暗闇のない日があることをサムエルは教えました。これはニーファイ人にとって救い主の誕生のしるしとなりました。

Samuel preaches to the Nephites and warns them of punishments that will come if they do not repent.  Most importantly, Samuel tells them that the Savior will be born in just 5 more years.  He teaches them that there will be day and a night and a day with no darkness on the day the Savior is born.  This will be a sign to the Nephites of the birth of the Savior.

また、救い主が十字架にかけられるとき、恐ろしい嵐、暗闇、地震、火事が 3日間続くと教えました。

He also teaches them that there will be three days of terrible storms, darkness, earthquakes, and fires when the Savior is crucified.  

これらは興味深いしるしです。救い主がこの世に来られるときには大いなる光があり、救い主が霊界にいるときにはひどい嵐と暗闇があるのです。

These are interesting symbols.  There will be great light when the Savior comes into the world and there will be terrible storms and darkness when the Savior is in the Spirit world.

ヒラマンは、これらのことはすべて、ニーファイ人に悔い改めて主に立ち返る機会を与えるためにサムエルが教えたことだと思い起こさせています。ニーファイ人には真理と知識が与えられていました。信じるか信じないかは、彼ら自身の選択でした。

Helman reminds us that all these things were taught by Samuel to give the Nephites an opportunity to repent and to return to the Lord.  The Nephites had truth and knowledge given to them.  It was their own choice to believe or to disbelieve.

今日の私たちも同様です。私たちは偉大な真理と知識を与えられています。救い主がこの世に来られたことと、救い主の偉大な贖罪を通して悔い改めて清くなることができることを知っています。私たちを導いてくれるモルモン書で教えられている真理があります。私たちに教えを施してくれる生ける預言者と使徒がいます。

It is the same with us today.  We have been given great truth and knowledge.  We know that the Savior came into this world and that through his great Atonement, we can repent and become clean.  We have the truths taught in the Book of Mormon to guide us.  We have living prophets and apostles who teach us.  

ニーファイ人と同じように、私たちもそれぞれ自分で決断する必要があります。教えられた真理を受け入れるか、拒むかは、私たちに完全な自由があります。信じることを強制される人も、信じないことを強制される人もいません。

Just like the Nephites, we each need to make our own decisions.  We have complete freedom to accept the truths that we have been taught or to reject them.  No one is forced to believe and no one is forced to disbelieve.

自由意志は福音の最も基本的な原則です。信じることを選んだ人は約束された祝福をすべて受けます。真理を拒むことを選んだ人はそれらの祝福を受けません。

Free agency is the most fundamental principle of the gospel.  Those who chose to believe will receive all of the promised blessings.  Those who choose to reject the truth will not receive those blessings.  

裁きの日には、真理を拒んだ者たちは、自分以外の誰も責めることはできないでしょう。非難されるのは彼ら自身の選択の結果であることを認めなければならないでしょう。聖典で教えられているように、憐れみは正義を奪うことはできません。誰もが自由に選択でき、誰もがその選択の結果を受けるのです。

At the day of judgment, those who rejected the truth will have no one to blame but themselves.  They will have to acknowledge that their condemnation is a result of their own choices.  As we are taught in the scriptures, mercy cannot rob justice.  Everyone is free to choose and everyone will receive the consequences of those choices.

新しい週が始まります。真理を受け入れる自由も拒む自由もあることを覚えて過ごしましょう。善を選ぶか悪を選ぶかはまったく自由なのです。行動を自由に選べますが、その行動の結果を選ぶのは自由ではないということを忘れてはいけません。常に善を選び、真理を受け入れ、救い主イエス・キリストに従うよう最善を尽くしましょう。戒めを守る者に約束されているすべての祝福を受けられる行動をしましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember that we are free to accept or to reject truth.  Let’s remember that we have the freedom to choose good or to choose evil.  Let’s remember that while we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of those actions.  Let’s do our best to always choose good, to accept truth, to follow our Savior Jesus Christ.  Let’s do those things that will allow us to receive all the blessings that have been promised to those who keep the commandments.
