Thou shalt be over all my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou.  And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.  And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph’s hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.  Genesis 41:40-43

In this reading assignment, we learn about the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob.  The story of Joseph is a story of betrayal, suffering, patience, and triumph.  There are many lessons in this story for us to learn from.

この読書課題では、私たちはヤコブの息子であるヨセフの話について学びます。それは裏切りや苦しみ、忍耐、そして勝利についての物語です。そこから私たちは多くの教訓を学びます。

Joseph was the 11th son of Jacob.  His older brothers were jealous of him, because they thought their father, Jacob, loved Joseph more than he loved them.  So one day, when they were all out in the fields, his older brothers decided to kill Joseph.  Luckily, his oldest brother, Reuben, stopped them.  He suggested that they put Joseph in a deep pit instead of killing him.  The brothers agreed.  Reuben’s plan was to come back later and rescue Joseph.  

ヨセフはヤコブの11番目の息子でした。兄たちは彼に嫉妬していました。父親のヤコブがヨセフを彼らよりも愛していると思っていたからです。それで、ある日、彼らが遠くに出ていた時、兄たちはヨセフを殺すことに決めました。幸いなことに、彼の兄、ルベンは彼らを止めました。彼はヨセフを殺す代わりに深い穴に入れることを提案しました。兄たちは同意し、ルベンの計画は後で戻って行きヨセフを救うことでした。

But while Reuben was gone, the other brothers saw a merchant caravan heading to Egypt. Judah suggested that they sell Joseph to the merchants instead of killing him. So Joseph was sold as a slave.  

しかし、ルベンがいない間に、他の兄たちは隊商がエジプトに向かっているのを見ました。ユダは、ヨセフを殺すのではなく、商人に売ることを提案しました。それでヨセフは奴隷として売られました。

For many years, young Joseph served in the house of Potiphar.  Potiphar was a good man and treated Joseph well.  He gave Joseph the responsibility of managing the entire house.  But Potiphar’s wife tried to tempt Joseph and when Joseph refused the temptation, Potiphar’s wife made serious false accusations against Joseph.  Since he was a slave, and since Potiphar was an important man, no one believed Joseph.  He was unjustly condemned to prison.

何年もの間、若いヨセフはポテパルの家で仕えました。ポテパルは善い人であったので、ヨセフはよい待遇を受け、ヨセフに家全体を管理する責任を与えました。しかし、ポテパルの妻はヨセフを誘惑しようとしました。そして、ヨセフが誘惑を拒んだので、ポテパルの妻はヨセフに対して深刻な虚偽の告発をしました。ヨセフは奴隷であり、ポテパルは有力な人物だったので、誰もヨセフを信じませんでした。彼は不当に獄屋に入れられました。

He was in prison for several years and was made the second in command of the prison.  While in prison, he interpreted dreams for two other inmates.  In both cases, the dreams came true, just as Joseph had said.  Later, when Pharaoh had a dream, one of those two men remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him.  Joseph was able to interpret Pharaoh’s dream of seven good years followed by seven bad years.  For this, Pharaoh made Joseph the second in command over all of Egypt.  

彼は数年間、獄屋に入れられ、獄屋番は彼に全てを委ねました。獄屋にいる間、彼は２人の囚人の夢を解き明かしました。どちらの場合も、夢はヨセフが解き明かした通りになりました。 その後、パロが夢を見たとき、その２人のうちのひとりがヨセフを思い出し、パロに彼について話しました。ヨセフは、パロの７つの良い年とそれに続く７つの悪い年の夢を解き明かすことができました。このために、パロはヨセフをエジプト全土のつかさにしました。

What a life Joseph experienced!  How he must have suffered when his brothers sold him as a slave.  He was starting to do well in the house of Potiphar when an unjust accusation resulted in him being sent to prison.  Even in that terrible situation, he did his best and was put in a position of authority in the prison.  But even after he interpreted the dreams of his fellow prisoners, he did not get released from prison for several more years.

ヨセフはなんという人生を経験したのでしょう。兄たちが彼を奴隷として売ったとき、彼はさぞ苦しんだに違いありません。彼が不当な告発によって獄屋に入れられたとき、ちょうどポテパルの家でうまくいき始めていたときでした。そんな状況でも、彼は最善を尽くし、獄屋で権威のある立場に置かれました。しかし、彼が仲間の囚人の夢を解き明かした後も、数年間、獄屋から釈放されませんでした。

Finally, when he interprets Pharaoh’s dream correctly, he is made the ruler of all of Egypt.  What a journey from slave to ruler.  How many times must Joseph have wanted to give up?  How many times did he think the Lord had abandon him?  How many times did he wonder why he had to suffer such trials?

最後に、彼はパロの夢を解き明かすと、エジプト全土のつかさとなりました。なんと、奴隷から支配者への旅路となったのです。ヨセフは幾度あきらめたいと思ったことでしょうか？主が彼を見放されたと幾度思ったことでしょうか？なぜそのような試練に苦しむ必要があるのかと幾度疑問に思ったことでしょうか？

But, at the end of the story, we see how the Lord had prepared Joseph to save his family during a great famine.  Through all that Joseph suffered, he never gave up or turned against the Lord.  He kept on trying and doing his best to be a good person and to help others.  

しかし、物語の終わりに、大飢饉の間、ヨセフの家族を救うために主がどのようにヨセフを備えられたかがわかります。ヨセフが苦しんだすべてのことを通して、決してあきらめたり、主に背を向けたりはしませんでした。彼は善い人となり、他の人を助けるために最善を尽くし続けました。

There are times of suffering and trials in all of our lives.  None of us will suffer like Joseph, but we can remember his example when times of trial come to us.  We can remember that he remained faithful no matter how hard the trial was.  Finally, he was able to overcome his trials and be a great blessing to his family.

私たち誰もが人生の中で苦しみと試練を経験します。ヨセフのように苦しむ人は誰もいませんが、私たちは試練にあうとき、彼の模範を思い出すことができます。彼の試しがどんなに困難であっても、忠実であり続けたことを覚えておきましょう。最後に、彼は試練を克服し、家族に大きな祝福を与えることができました。

As we go through this next week, let’s think about the story of Joseph.  Let’s remember that life is long and that our sufferings will be over some day.  It took Joseph more than 15 years of suffering before he was able to see the reason for his trials.  Let’s remember to always do our best in whatever situation we are in, knowing that the Lord is watching over us and will always help us.
