それゆえ、わたしは、わたしの御霊の力によってもろもろの国民を打ってえり分けるために、世の弱い者たち、無学で見下されている者たちを呼ぶ。教義と聖約　３５：１３

Wherefore, I call upon the weak things of the world, those who are unlearned and despised, to thrash the nations by the power of my Spirit.  Doctrine & Covenants 35:13

教義と聖約のこの章では、主がシドニー・リグドンに具体的な指示を与えておられます。シドニーは1830年12月に預言者のもとを訪れ、「主は私に何を望んでおられるでしょうか」と尋ねました。35章は、その問いに対する主の回答です。

In this Section of the Doctrine & Covenants, the Lord gives specific instructions to Sidney Rigdon.  Sidney came to the Prophet in December of 1830 and asked the Prophet what the Lord wanted him to do.  Section 35 is the Lord’s response to Sidney’s question.

興味深いのは、1830年に、主がこの節でシドニーに言われたことが、今日の私たちにも当てはまるということです。13節で主は王国の業がどのように進むかを説明されています。

One interesting thing the Lord says in this Section applies to us today just as it did to Sidney in 1830.  In verse 13, the Lord explains how the work of the kingdom will go forward.

主は、世の「弱い者」を使って、すべての国から義人を探すと言われています。主がこの大きな責任を委ねられた人々とは「無学」な人々のことです。

The Lord says he will use the “weak things” of the world to search out the righteous from all nations.  Those who are “unlearned” are the ones that the Lord has entrusted with this great responsibility.

ここでいう「無学な者」とは、教育を受けていない、または読み書きができない人のことではありません。経験がない人のことでも、才能や能力がない人のことでもありません。

“Unlearned” does not mean uneducated or illiterate.  It does not mean people with no experience.  It does not mean people with no skills or talents.

世の観点から言えば、「学識がある」ことは重要な人物とみなします。指導者や政治家、教育者、医師などはその様な人物のことです。彼らは学識があるために世の中から尊敬を得た人々です。

In the view of the world, the “learned” are important people.  They are the leaders, the politicians, the educators, the doctors.  They are people that have the respect of the world because of their learning.

しかし、主のやり方は違います。主が求められるのは、戒めに従おうとする心、主の道を歩もうとする意志、他者に仕えようとする気持ちです。

That is not how the Lord works, though.  The Lord cares about how willing we are to obey the commandments, about how willing we are to walk in his paths, about how willing we are to serve others.

世間では、私たちの多くは「弱く」「無学な者」と思われるかもしれません。しかし、主の目には、私たちは勇敢で忠実な僕です。神の王国で奉仕する資格は大学の学位ではなく、信仰、謙遜、慈愛、そして神への愛なのです。

In the eyes of the world, many of us are considered to be “weak” and “unlearned”.  In the eyes of the Lord, though, we are considered to be valiant and faithful servants.  The qualifications to serve in the kingdom of God are not university degrees, but faith, humility, charity, and a love of God.

預言者ジョセフ・スミスもまた、世の目には「弱く」「無学な者」でした。しかし、彼は神によって召され、この最後の時代の回復を導く預言者となりました。正式な教育は限られていましたが、聖霊によって何をすべきか、どのように行うべきかを教えられました。

The Prophet Joseph Smith was certainly one of the weak and unlearned people.  Yet he was called of God to be the prophet to open the final dispensation of time.  While he had little formal education, he was taught by the Holy Ghost what to do and how to do it.  

その後も、主は「弱く」「無学な者」を預言者として選ばれ、ご自身の教会を導いてこられました。

Following in the Prophet’s footsteps have been other prophets, other weak and unlearned people, whom the Lord chose to lead his Church.  

そして今週末、私たちは主の預言者や使徒たちから直接話を聞く素晴らしい機会に恵まれています。預言者ジョセフ・スミスのように、これらの預言者と使徒たちは今日、私たちに主のみ言葉を教えています。今日も主は教会を導いておられます。

This weekend, we have the great opportunity to hear directly from the Lord’s prophets and apostles.  Just like the Prophet Joseph Smith, these prophets and apostles today teach us the word of the Lord.  The Lord guides and directs the Church today.

生ける預言者と使徒がいることは、なんと大きな祝福でしょうか。彼らの勧告や教えを直接聞くことができるのは、なんと素晴らしい恵みでしょうか。主の僕を通して、啓示と導きの言葉を受けることができるのは、なんと幸いなことでしょうか。

How blessed we are to have living prophets and apostles.  How blessed we are to be able to hear their instructions and teachings.  How blessed we are to receive words of revelation and guidance from these servants of the Lord.  

私たちは、彼らの教えをどれほど大切にしているでしょうか？それを聖文のように扱っているでしょうか？彼らが教えてくれたことを、学び、祈り、深く考えているでしょうか？

Do we value their instruction?  Do we treat it as scripture?  Do we study and pray about what they teach us?

新しい週が始まります。教えられたことを覚え、それを実践するよう最善を尽くしましょう。彼らの言葉を学び、思い巡らし、リアホナから総大会のお話を読んでみましょう。これからの六か月間、私たち自身の「リアホナ」として用いましょう。きっと、真理と光の道へと導いてくれるはずです。

As we go through this next week, let’s do our best to remember what we have been taught.  Let’s study and ponder the things they have said.  Let’s read the General Conference talks in the Liahona.  Let’s use them as our own personal Liahona for the next six months.  They will guide is in the way of truth and light.
