主のすべての約束が果たされるまで、主の永遠の目的は続くからである。

For the eternal purposes of the Lord shall roll on, until all of his promises shall be fulfilled.

ニーファイ人の記録が終わりに近づくと、ニーファイ人とレーマン人の間の壮大で恐ろしい最後の戦いについて読むことになります。それは、かつては義と信仰に満ちた人々の非常に悲しい結末です。その最後の戦いで、23万人以上のニーファイ人が殺されました。

As we come to the end of the Nephite record, we read about the great and terrible final battle between the Nephites and the Lamanites.  It was a very sad end to what was once a righteous and faithful people.  More than 230,000 Nephites were killed in that last battle.

The prophet Mormon writes that only 24 Nephites survived that terrible battle.  This must have been a very sad day for Mormon.  He had spent his whole life trying to help the people of Nephi repent and return to the Lord.  He was only 16 years old when he was given command of the entire Nephite army.  He was 74 years old at the time of the final battle at Cumorah.

その 60 年近い間、彼はニーファイ人をレーマン人から守るために何度も戦いに赴きました。彼はニーファイ人を教え、警告し、悔い改めるよう懇願しました。

During those nearly 60 years, he had led them into battle many times, to protect the Nephites from the Lamanites.  He had taught them and had warned them and had pleaded with them to repent.

しかし、それは非常に邪悪な時代で、ニーファイ人はモルモンの勧告に従おうとしませんでした。彼らは、モルモンや他の教会指導者の努力にもかかわらず、邪悪な行為を続けました。ついに、ニーファイ人の邪悪さはひどくなり、モルモンは彼らの軍隊を率いることを拒否しました。彼は、ニーファイ人がレーマン人と何度も恐ろしい戦いを繰り広げ、多くのニーファイ人が殺されるのを見ていました。

But it was a time of great wickedness and the Nephites refused to follow Mormon’s counsel.  They continued on in their wickedness, in spite of the efforts of Mormon and other Church leaders.  Finally, the wickedness of the Nephites became so bad that Mormon refused to lead their armies.  He watched as the Nephites had several terrible battles with the Lamanites, in which many of the Nephites were killed.

結局、モルモンは絶望的だと知りながらも、再び彼らの軍隊を率いることに同意しました。彼はニーファイ人が悔い改める機会を何度も与えられたにもかかわらず、彼らが生き方を変えることを拒んだことを知っていました。モルモンは彼らについて、「この民の中にあったようなひどい悪事は、リーハイのすべての子孫の中に、これまで決してなかった」と述べています（モルモン書 4:12）。

In the end, Mormon agrees to lead their army again, even though he knows that it is hopeless.  He knows that the Nephites were given many opportunities to repent, but they had refused to change their ways.  Mormon says of them, “there had never been so great wickedness among all the children of Lehi” (Mormon 4:12).

最後の戦いの後、邪悪なニーファイ人が皆殺しにされ、モルモンは彼らが悔い改めなかったことに対する深い悲しみを覚えました。彼はこう述べています。「わたしの心は苦しみのあまり張り裂けてしまいそうだ」（モルモン書6：16）「両手を広げて立ってあなたがたを受け入れようとしておられた、あのイエスをどうして拒んだのか」（モルモン書6：17）

After the final battle, when all of the wicked Nephites had been killed, Mormon shares his great sorrow that they had not repented.  He says, “my soul was rent with anguish” (Mormon 6:16).  “How could you have rejected that Jesus who stood with open arms to receive you! (Mormon 6:17).

ニーファイ人は悔い改める機会を何度も与えられましたが、悔い改めませんでした。私たちはどうでしょうか。私たちはニーファイ人のように、高慢な心を持ち、変わろうとしないでしょうか？主の預言者の勧告に従うという固い決意をしているでしょうか。たとえ私たちがそうすることを拒んだたとしても、主の業は前進し続けるということを理解しているでしょうか。

The Nephites were given many opportunities to repent, but they would not.  What about us?  Are we like the Nephites, proud in our hearts and unwilling to change?  Are we firm in our determination to follow the counsel of the Lord’s prophets?  Do we understand that the work of the Lord will keep moving forward, even if we refuse to be part of it.  

主はすべてのことを管理しておられます。主の約束はすべて適切な時に成就します。主の戒めを守る人々に主が祝福を下さることを止めるものは何もありません。主の御業が前進するのを止めるものは何もありません。たとえ私たちが反抗し聖約の道を離れることを選んでも、主の御業は続きます。

The Lord is in charge of all things.  All of his promises will be fulfilled at the proper time.  Nothing will stop the Lord from sending down blessings to those who keep his commandments.  Nothing will stop the work of the Lord from moving forward.  Even if we choose to rebel and leave the covenant path, the Lord’s work will continue on.  

新しい週が始まります。ニーファイ人の悪い例を忘れないようにしましょう。悔い改める機会が何度も与えられたのに、主が約束された祝福を拒むことを選んだのを思い出しましょう。主の御業が前進するのを止めるものは何もないことを覚えておきましょう。主の軍隊の一員となることを選びましょう。御業の前進を助けるために、できる限りのことをしましょう。主の戒めを守る人々に約束されているすべての祝福にふさわしくありましょう。

As we go through this week, let’s remember the bad example of the Nephites.  Let’s remember that they were given many opportunities to repent, but they chose to reject the blessings the Lord had promised.  Let’s remember that nothing will stop the work of the Lord from moving forward.  Let’s choose to be part of the Lord’s army.  Let’s do all that we can to help the work go forward.  Let’s be worthy of all the blessings that are promised to those who keep the Lord’s commandments.
