O how foolish, and how vain, and how evil, and devilish, and how quick to do iniquity, and how slow to do good, are the children of men; yea, how quick to hearken unto the words of the evil one, and to set their hearts upon the vain things of the world. Yea, how quick to be lifted up in pride; yea, how quick to boast, and do all manner of that which is iniquity; and how slow are they to remember the Lord their God, and to give ear unto his counsels, yea, how slow to walk in wisdom’s paths. In the Book of Mormon, we read the amazing story of the Nephite people. There are periods of great righteousness and periods of great wickedness. The Nephites had the scriptures from the Brass Plates that they could study. They had the teachings of the prophets, from Nephi down to the time in which they lived. They had all the commandments, teachings, and instructions they needed to be a righteous people.

And yet, for the majority of the Nephite history, they rebelled against the Lord and his prophets. It is interesting that almost every time there was a powerful leader who convinced the Lamanites to attack the Nephites, that leader was a Nephite who had rebelled against the righteous. Amalickiah, Amlici, Gadianton, Giddianhi, Zemnarihah, and Zerahemnah were all Nephites who rejected the gospel, went over to the Lamanites, and wanted to destroy the Nephites.

We read these stories and marvel that the Nephites were so quick to forget the Lord and to fall into transgression. We read about great prophets among the Nephites who had to constantly chastise the people for their lack of faithfulness. We read about how quickly the pride of the Nephites caused them to become hardened and wicked.
私たちは決してそのようにならないと言いきれますか？
We would never be like that. Or would we?
ニーファイ人と同じように、私たちには導いてくれる預言者がいます。ニーファイ人と同じように、私たちには学ぶべき聖典があります。ニーファイ人と同じように、私たちには義にかなった指導者からの勧告と指導があります。
Just like the Nephites, we have prophets to lead us. Just like the Nephites, we have scriptures to study. Just like the Nephites, we have counsel and instruction from righteous leaders.
あなたはイエス・キリストの福音を喜んでいますか？すべての戒めを守っていますか？生ける預言者や使徒の勧告に従っていますか？
Do we rejoice in the gospel of Jesus Christ? Do we keep all the commandments? Do we follow the counsel of living prophets and apostles?
あなたは個人で、また家族として毎日祈っていますか？安息日の集会にすべて出席していますか？召しを受け入れ、奉仕するために最善を尽くしていますか？他の人々に奉仕していますか？
Do we pray each day as individuals and as families? Do we attend all of our Sabbath Day meetings? Do we accept callings and do our best to serve? Do we minister to others?
あなたは正直に什分の一を納めていますか？知恵の言葉を守っていますか？状況が許す限り頻繁に神殿に参入していますか？
Do we pay an honest tithe? Do we keep the Word of Wisdom? Do we attend the Temple as often as our circumstances allow?
あなたは総大会のメッセージを読み、研究していますか？「わたしに従ってきなさい」のレッスンを学んでいますか？モルモン書を毎日読んでいますか？
Do we read and study the General Conference messages? Do we study the “Come, Follow Me” lessons? Do we read from the Book of Mormon each day?
新しい週が始まります。ニーファイ人の高慢さとそれが彼らの証に与えた損害を忘れないようにしましょう。サタンの罠に陥るのはいかに簡単かということを忘れないようにしましょう。常に聖約の道にしっかりと留まるよう最善を尽くしましょう。証を強く保つために、小さな簡単なことすべてを行いましょう。
As we go through this week, let’s remember the pride of the Nephites and the damage it caused to their testimonies. Let’s remember how easy it is to fall into Satan’s traps. Let’s do our best to always stay firmly on the covenant path. Let’s do all the small and simple things that will keep our testimonies strong.
